A restoration shop near the Illinois side of the Quad Cities called us in October about adding capacity for winter storage of customer cars. They wanted lifts they could push into corners come spring, when the cars go back to their owners and the shop returns to active builds. Start With the Storage Question, Not the Lift Question

The first branch of the decision tree is not which lift to buy. It is what the bay does when the lifts are not in use. A restoration shop that stores customer cars over winter but wants the floor back in April has different requirements than a shop that runs the same three project cars all year. The winter-storage shop wants to roll the columns aside without disassembly. The all-year shop wants to leave the columns anchored on a permanent working line. For the Quad Cities shop we quoted, storage was the priority, so mobile flexibility trumped raw capacity.

The owner had eight cars on-site through the cold months and wanted three of them stacked on lifts to free floor space. That drives column count more than capacity. Three sets of four columns each would let him lift three cars simultaneously and pull the columns off any car that got picked up early. Mobile auto lifts scale in sets, and buying two sets in year one plus a third set in year two is a common purchase path for shops that phase capacity to cash flow. Budget Floor: What Fits Under Fifteen Thousand Delivered

Under fifteen thousand delivered and installed in western Illinois, the honest answer is one four-column set of CLMM-5000 columns. Twenty thousand pounds total capacity, single-phase 220V, tow-handle mobility, and enough range to lift any passenger car or half-ton pickup a restoration shop typically stores. This tier fits an owner who wants one storage line and is not ready to commit to a full multi-set install. Delivered-and-installed pricing depends on freight distance and slab condition, but the low-teens-thousands number is realistic for a Quad Cities-adjacent shop.

What this budget does not buy is capacity for full-size diesel duallies, medium-duty trucks, or motorhomes. If any of those show up in the shop, tier one is not enough. It also does not buy wireless controls, which are convenient but add roughly ten percent to the total. For a restoration shop that stores classic cars and half-ton customer trucks, the CLMM-5000 set at tier one covers ninety percent of stored vehicles, and mobile auto lifts in this class turn into the workhorse configuration for the average western Illinois shop. Overspecifying past this tier without a clear need to lift heavier vehicles is one of the more common budget mistakes we see.

Mid-Tier: Configuring for Both Storage and Active Service

The mid-tier decision starts around twenty thousand and covers shops that need both winter storage and active fluid-service capability. Four CLHM-125XF columns at 12,500 lb each lift 50,000 lb across the set, cover every domestic pickup, and handle any RV or box truck a restoration shop takes in for winter storage. This is the tier where a shop can genuinely say it lifts anything on the property. The tradeoff is three-phase power; without it, mid-tier column sets do not run at their rated performance and the factory warranty gets thin.

A shop willing to add three-phase service to the panel unlocks the mid-tier at a lower total cost than trying to double up on CLMM-5000 sets. Two sets of CLMM-5000 columns cost more than one CLHM-125XF set and lift less per column, though the two-set path gives twice the working stations. That is the fork in the mid-tier tree: fewer heavier columns on three-phase, or more lighter columns on single-phase. For a shop that stores cars and also services one at a time, one heavier set of mobile auto lifts is usually the cleaner answer. For a shop that services multiple cars in parallel, two lighter sets win.

Site Survey: Slab, Panel, and Working Area

Before any of the tier logic matters, the site has to survey clean. We ask for three things when we schedule a survey visit in western Illinois: the slab thickness and pour date, a photo of the electrical panel showing service size and phase, and a floor-plan sketch of the intended working area with any drains, expansion joints, and obstructions marked. If any of those three items is missing, we cannot quote accurately, and the shop ends up either overbuying or under-provisioning on install day.

Slab requirements are firm. Four inches minimum for CLMM-5000 loads, six inches for CLHM-125XF, and the slab has to be flat within a quarter inch across the working area. Panel requirements depend on the tier: 220V single-phase for CLMM-5000, three-phase 208-240V or 480V for CLHM-series. The Quad Cities shop we quoted had an older five-inch slab and only single-phase, so we quoted CLMM-5000 and told him mid-tier was off the table unless he upgraded the panel. Site survey is where the mobile auto lifts decision gets constrained by reality, not by wish-list capacity. That step is worth doing early.

Install Prep: What the Shop Does Before Our Truck Arrives

Once the site surveys clean and the tier is picked, the shop has a short prep list to run before install day. Clear the working area to a fifteen-foot radius around the intended columns so the tow handles have room to swing. Move any workbenches, hoists, or air-line drops that overhang the working footprint. Confirm the panel has an open dedicated circuit for the primary control column and that the electrician has scheduled the wire pull to the wall receptacle before we arrive. If we show up and the receptacle is not there, we cannot complete the install that day.

Slab prep also matters. Any spalled or cracked patches within the working area should get patched with a fast-cure repair mortar at least a week before install so the concrete is hard by column-caster load. Floor drains within the working footprint should get covered with a steel plate for install-day so the columns roll without catching a caster in the grate. The Quad Cities shop patched two spalls and covered one drain the weekend before we arrived, and install ran on schedule. Prep for mobile auto lifts is not complicated, but skipping it burns a day of install labor and delays the shop’s return to work.

Delivery Timing and Seasonal Windows in Western Illinois

Timing the order matters more in the Midwest than in warmer regions. Winter installs are our fastest turnaround; late-fall orders often get installed the same year, before the shop’s storage season peaks. Spring and summer orders push into six-to-eight week lead times because installer schedules fill up. For a western Illinois shop that wants columns running by December, October is the last comfortable order window. September is safer. Waiting until November usually means the columns arrive in January, and the storage season is already underway.

Freight logistics also shape timing. Challenger ships column sets on pallets to our Iowa warehouse, and we truck them across the river ourselves. That leg adds two to three days compared with a same-state delivery but gets the columns to the shop with our install crew on the same day, which cuts unloading complexity. Shops that try to take direct factory shipment usually end up paying more in freight and forklift rental than the savings on install labor cover. Mobile auto lifts arrive best as a delivered-and-installed package, and the Midwest calendar rewards early ordering more than warmer regions do.

Final Configuration and What to Order Right Now

For the Quad Cities restoration shop, the final call was two four-column CLMM-5000 sets, single-phase 220V, standard tow handles, and a floor-plan layout that let both sets share the same working corridor when needed. Total invested in the low twenties delivered and installed. Storage capacity doubled without touching the panel. When spring came and the cars went home, both sets rolled to the north wall and the floor returned to active-build use.
