Before we sell any Ames shop mobile auto lifts, we ask about the slab. Not because we want to slow the sale down, but because a column set that fails through the concrete on a differential fluid service is not a minor accident — it is a totaled vehicle, an injured tech, and the kind of insurance claim that ends careers. A tire-and-alignment shop is exactly the profile of business that ends up buying a mobile column set, because differential fluid service is one of those jobs that is easier on wheel-engagement lifts than on a two-post with arms in the way. So the safety walk-through matters, and slab thickness and rebar are where we start.

Why the slab matters more than the columns

A mobile column set puts its full load on four small footprints. When you lift a twelve-thousand-pound truck with a four-column medium-duty set, each column footprint is carrying roughly three thousand pounds of point load. That load transfers into the concrete slab through a footprint the size of a dinner plate. If the slab underneath is undersized, cracked, or badly reinforced, the concrete deforms — sometimes visibly, sometimes not — and the column starts working itself out of level.

An out-of-level column is the first sign of trouble. If you have watched a set of mobile auto lifts pitch a truck on a bad slab, you know it is subtle at first and terrifying when you understand what is happening. The differential fluid drain plug is not where you want to be when a column starts sinking on one corner. This is why we care about slab spec more than we care about which brand of column you buy. Any decent mainstream column will do the work. Only good concrete keeps everybody safe while it does.

The concrete spec we look for

For a medium-duty five-thousand-pound-per-column set — the twenty-thousand-pound total capacity that most Ames tire and alignment shops end up buying — we look for at least four inches of 3,000-PSI concrete with proper reinforcement. Six inches is more comfortable. Rebar sized number four on twelve-inch centers, or equivalent welded wire mesh, is the reinforcement floor. For heavier sets — fourteen-thousand-per-column and up — the slab spec climbs to six inches minimum and stiffer reinforcement.

The reason: point-load failure in unreinforced concrete is not always visible from above. The slab can develop internal cracks that do not surface until the day the column drops a corner under full load. Reinforcement holds the slab together even when it cracks. We do a hammer-tap test and a visual check on every install — sometimes we core-sample if the shop cannot document the pour. For mobile auto lifts, this is not overengineering. This is the difference between a set that runs for twenty years and a set that lands a truck sideways in year three.

What a differential fluid service actually asks of the lift

Differential fluid on a modern truck or SUV is a longer job than most techs plan for. You are draining, cleaning, sometimes replacing the plug or gasket, refilling, and the fluid itself is slow to pour on a cold day. The vehicle sits at working height for thirty to sixty minutes under full load. That is thirty to sixty minutes of constant point-load on your slab. It is not a quick lift-and-lower cycle — it is sustained load.

This is where slab quality shows up. On a good slab, sustained load is a non-event. On a marginal slab, sustained load is when the concrete decides whether it is going to hold or not. If you have a shop with an older slab of unknown thickness and reinforcement, and you plan to run mobile auto lifts on differential service jobs, get the slab evaluated before you buy the columns. An engineer’s letter costs a few hundred dollars. A slab replacement costs several thousand. A failure costs everything.

What older Ames shops usually find on their slab

A lot of Ames shops are in buildings poured in the 70s and 80s, and the slabs were spec’d for what the building was for at the time — general storage, some vehicle traffic, not necessarily heavy lift equipment. We have looked at slabs in central Iowa shops that were three inches with no reinforcement at all, and slabs that were six inches with rebar on eighteen-inch centers. Both look identical from above. Only a core sample or a scanner tells you what is really down there.

If the slab is undersized for a heavy set, options exist. You can pour a reinforced pad in the specific area where the columns will operate — a twelve-by-twenty pad six inches thick with proper rebar can host a column set even if the surrounding slab is thinner. This is common in older Ames buildings and it works. We help plan and spec these pours in coordination with a local concrete contractor. It is not a small project, but it is a manageable one, and it is far cheaper than the alternative.

What about temperature and cure age

Concrete keeps gaining strength for years, so cure age is usually not a limiting factor on a slab that is more than a couple of months old. Where age matters: brand-new pours, and slabs that saw a hard freeze during cure. If you are pouring a new slab or pad specifically to host mobile auto lifts, plan on a minimum 28-day cure before you set columns under load. Some engineers want 60 days for point-load use, and we do not argue with that.

Temperature matters day-to-day for a different reason. Cold concrete is stiff and takes point load fine. Warm concrete that has been sitting in the sun through a summer afternoon is slightly softer and slightly more prone to point deformation. In practice, for Ames shops, this is a small effect and not something you need to schedule around. But it is worth knowing that the slab has a personality that shifts with the season, and paying attention to how the columns behave on the hottest days of July is a legitimate part of long-term maintenance.

Anchoring, floor coatings, and other slab decisions

Mobile columns do not need floor anchors — that is the whole appeal. But if your shop floor has an epoxy coating or a thick sealer, the column feet can shift more than they should on the smooth surface. We recommend clean bare concrete or a very thin sealer under the column footprints, and we can show you where to mask off if you are coating the rest of the shop. This is a small detail that gets missed and it matters for column stability during long-hold jobs like a differential drain.

The other slab consideration: expansion joints and control cuts. Do not park a column on a joint. The joint is engineered to move as the slab expands and contracts, and putting a point load on it is asking for trouble. Mark the spots in your shop where columns cannot go, and train your techs to respect them. How we handle the safety walk-through on install

We test known-hard spots with a hammer, look for surface cracks, and identify expansion joints. If anything looks marginal, we say so before we bring the columns off the truck. We would rather reschedule and get the shop a proper pad than set columns on a slab we are not confident in.

After the walk-through we set up, calibrate, and do a full load test with one of your shop trucks. We hold the truck at working height under load for several minutes and watch the slab and the columns together. If nothing moves, we hand it over. If something does, we address it before we leave.
