A third-generation family-owned garage on the Iowa-Illinois corridor called us about mobile auto lifts specifically for wheel bearing service on their fleet-heavy work mix. What they wanted, and what most buyers should want, was a technical deep-dive on real dimensions and certification — not glossy marketing sheets. Wheel bearing work is precision work, and the equipment holding a truck up while a tech pulls a spindle nut needs to be right on every spec. The Automotive Lift Institute’s ALI Gold label is one part of that. Column dimensions and geometry are another. This piece walks through the actual technical specs a serious buyer should know.

What ALI Gold actually certifies

ALI Gold is the certification label issued by the Automotive Lift Institute through an independent third-party testing program. It certifies that the specific lift model has been tested to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard for structural, functional, and durability performance. For mobile auto lifts specifically, the certification covers load capacity as rated, sync-and-lock behavior under load, controller safety response, and structural performance across cycles. The label is model-specific and generation-specific — not a company-wide seal.

Why this matters for a wheel bearing job: the ALI Gold spec includes tested lock-hold behavior under sustained load. A wheel bearing job holds the vehicle at working height for extended periods while the tech works, and lock reliability is exactly what keeps the vehicle from settling. Non-certified imports may claim similar specs, but they have not been tested against the ANSI standard. For a family garage buying mobile auto lifts on a twenty-year horizon, ALI Gold is the floor. Everything Rotary and Challenger sells in this category is certified. Some import brands are not.

Column height, lift stroke, and clearance

Real dimensions on a mainstream medium-duty column: overall column height in the range of 88 to 96 inches. Lift stroke — the distance the fork or carriage travels from lowest to highest — typically 66 to 72 inches. That gives you enough working height to stand under the vehicle comfortably for wheel bearing work on a passenger car or light truck. For a full-size truck with a lifted suspension, you may run out of stroke on a standard column — the wheels start higher and you cannot lift the frame as high.

Heavy-duty columns have longer stroke — 78 to 84 inches on a 14K-per-column set — which handles taller vehicles cleanly. The specific dimensions matter because your shop ceiling has to accommodate the tallest lifted vehicle. On a family garage with a 12-foot ceiling and mobile auto lifts stroking 72 inches, a standard truck lifts to a total elevation of around 15 feet — you are into the ceiling. Do the arithmetic before you buy. Column stroke plus vehicle height plus tech-head-clearance must fit under your ceiling.

Wheel fork geometry and engagement

The forks that engage the vehicle’s wheels are where mobile auto lifts differ meaningfully across brands. Adjustable-width forks that accept a range of tire sizes — narrow forks for passenger cars, wide forks for truck duallies — are standard on mainstream sets. The fork tips have retention rollers or straps that hold the wheel in position during the lift. Some sets use spring-loaded retention that auto-adjusts to tire diameter. Others use manually-set straps.

For wheel bearing work specifically, the fork geometry matters because you are pulling the wheel and hub while the vehicle is up. The fork needs to hold the vehicle at the spindle-adjacent tire location, and it needs to release cleanly when the wheel comes off. Mainstream Rotary and Challenger column sets are designed for this workflow. The fork tips extend and retract with the column, the retention is passive during lift and active at working height, and the sync between columns keeps the vehicle level as one wheel is pulled. This is exactly the kind of detail a family garage should ask a demo-day rep to show, hands-on.

Lock density and lock hold specifications

Modern mobile auto lifts have lock positions every 2 to 3 inches through the entire stroke. That means you can set the vehicle at a precise working height for a specific job — sitting height for interior work, standing height for underside, working height for wheel bearing. The lock density is a real quality-of-life spec. Older sets with locks every 8 or 12 inches force you to choose between too low and too high, and neither is right for the tech’s back.

ALI Gold certification tests lock hold under sustained load. The lock has to hold the rated capacity indefinitely without slipping or backing off. On a wheel bearing job that might have the vehicle up for two or three hours while an old bearing is pressed out and a new one pressed in, that lock behavior is critical. Certified sets pass this test. Non-certified sets are unknown quantities. This is one place where the certification label pays for itself immediately — you are trusting the lock every job, and the lock behavior has been independently verified.

Sync tolerance between columns

When mobile auto lifts run in a four or six-column configuration, the columns must lift in sync — otherwise the vehicle tilts, the load shifts unevenly, and the safety systems fault out. Sync tolerance on a modern mainstream set is a few tenths of an inch across all columns through the full stroke. That is tight enough that the vehicle stays level to the eye and to the tools throughout the lift.

Sync is controlled by the controller — the wired or wireless brain that talks to each column’s motor and lock position. Older sets used electromechanical sync with less precision. Modern controllers use encoder feedback from each column and adjust motor speed in real-time. This is why the controller is the most valuable single component in the set and why controller failure is the most disruptive breakdown. Buy from a distributor who stocks controllers for the brand you buy. On a family garage with a twenty-year horizon, controller availability in year twelve is the difference between one day of downtime and three months.

Slab load transfer and column footprint

The physical footprint of a mobile column at the concrete is a rectangle roughly 18 to 24 inches wide and 24 to 30 inches deep. Under load, that rectangle carries a substantial fraction of the total lifted weight — for a 20,000-pound truck on four columns, roughly 5,000 pounds per column. That point load transfers into the concrete through the column base and into the reinforcement layer underneath.

For 3,000-PSI concrete at 4 inches with number-four rebar on 12-inch centers, the load spec is within safe margin for medium-duty sets. For 6-inch slab with the same reinforcement, you have more margin for heavier sets. Family garages on the Iowa-Illinois corridor often have older buildings with unknown slab specs. Get the slab tested before you commit — a professional evaluation costs a few hundred dollars and confirms whether your existing slab handles the load or whether you need a reinforced pad in the working area. Do not guess on slab specs when you are lifting fleet trucks under mobile auto lifts.

What to ask on the demo day

If you get to a demo of a mobile auto lifts set — either at our facility or at a customer’s shop — the questions worth asking are technical, not sales-driven. Ask to see the ALI Gold label on the specific model. Confirm the certification is current. Ask about controller generation and how long that generation has been in production; long-production generations have better parts support. Ask about the sync tolerance spec and see if the rep can quote it — reps who cannot quote it are not selling on technical merit.

Ask about slab spec for your capacity level, and ask what the distributor’s warranty and service response looks like at year five and year ten, not just year one. If the answer is vague, keep shopping. Family-owned garages plan on twenty-year equipment cycles, and the distributor relationship has to survive that timeline.
