He wanted no vague ranges — he wanted line items. The equipment tier we quoted the Waukee shop

Heavy-duty truck work rules out the entry-tier portable scissor immediately. A Ram 3500, F-350, or Silverado 3500 crests 8,000 pounds empty and 10,000 pounds loaded, which puts them past the safe working limit of a 6,000-lb hobby lift. For the Waukee shop we quoted a 9,000-lb portable auto scissor lift with twin cylinders, heavier arm castings, and a wider pad footprint that spreads the load properly on the truck’s pinch welds. The equipment tier alone runs into the low five figures depending on brand and options. That’s the honest range — we won’t pretend the top-tier portable is cheap.

Why not push him to a 12,000-lb permanent 2-post instead? Because his bay is already earmarked for a mobile-column setup for the fleet trucks that don’t fit any post lift. A portable auto scissor lift shares that bay without competing for it, and it handles the smaller pickups and half-ton service work that the mobile columns don’t make sense for. That’s the shop-flow math: the right lift is the one that pays for itself inside your existing bay geometry, not the one with the highest capacity number. We wrote the tier justification into the quote so the shop’s accountant could see the logic before signing off.

Freight, delivery, and the crate line

Freight is the line every shop underestimates. A 9,000-lb portable scissor ships from the manufacturer’s warehouse on a full pallet, freight-class-70, and typically runs mid-three-figures depending on origin and lift-gate requirements. Concrete slab thickness and rebar in a truck shop

Here is where a heavy-duty portable auto scissor lift install gets expensive if the slab isn’t ready. The Waukee shop’s slab was original 1990s pour with an unknown mix. We ran three core samples across the target bay and found thicknesses between 3.5 and 5 inches, with rebar in some areas and only wire mesh in others. That’s a red flag for a 9,000-lb scissor because the pad footprint concentrates load on four small contact patches.

The manufacturer minimum is 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete with rebar on center. Our recommendation was to pour a fresh 6-inch overpour with #4 rebar in the lift zone, which added a few thousand dollars to the total project cost but eliminated the risk of a cracked slab under a customer’s truck. We coordinated the concrete crew, we specified the mix, and we timed the pour so the lift installed on cured concrete two weeks later. That extra spend is what the customer usually forgets when he compares our written quote to an online dropshipper’s cheaper number. Electrical: dedicated circuit, breaker, and cord routing

The lift needs power. A 9,000-lb portable auto scissor lift runs a 220V single-phase motor with a dedicated circuit sized to the pump’s data plate — typically 20 to 30 amp depending on manufacturer. The Waukee shop had 220V service in the main panel but no drop within reach of the target bay, so we brought in an electrician to run a new circuit and install a weatherproof outlet on the wall near the parking spot for the folded lift.

Electrical work varies by shop but for a straightforward run in an already-served building, a licensed electrician typically bills a couple of hours plus materials. On this job the whole electrical scope came in under a thousand dollars. We coordinated the visit so it overlapped with slab curing time, which meant no calendar delay for the shop owner. What we don’t do — and what buyers should never accept — is running the lift on a shared circuit or an extension cord. Either voids the warranty, kills the motor’s duty cycle, and creates a fire risk. If the electrical isn’t already in place, budget for it up front, get a written quote from a licensed electrician, and add it to the total project cost. Adapters, pad blocks, and the truck-specific tooling

A heavy-duty truck has pinch welds and frame rails that don’t align with default scissor pads. A Ram 3500, for example, wants a lift point along the frame rail just inboard of the leaf-spring hangers. A Ford Super Duty has a similar geometry but sits at a different height. To lift both cleanly on a single portable auto scissor lift, the Waukee shop needed a set of tall block adapters and one flat pad for lower-body vehicles.

We spec’d a five-piece adapter kit at the time of the lift order. Buying together saved shipping and got the shop a small package discount. Techs also appreciate that all the adapters live in a labeled bin near the lift, not scattered across the shop. If a customer’s truck arrives with a lift point the standard adapters don’t reach, we ship a custom block cut to spec from our Ames warehouse in a couple of days. Fluid, seal kits, and year-one service reserve

The lift ships with hydraulic fluid but the shop should keep a service reserve on the shelf: a five-gallon pail of manufacturer-spec ATF or synthetic hydraulic fluid, one spare cylinder seal kit, one arm-restraint gear rebuild kit, and a set of pad rubbers. That reserve costs a few hundred dollars and prevents a customer-facing delay when the first seal weeps or a rubber block splits.

We include the service-reserve line on every commercial quote because the shop that ignores it always calls us on a Friday afternoon needing a same-day fix. We can still ship out of Ames overnight but a shop with the parts on its own shelf is a shop that stays open. Year-one expected service on a well-installed portable auto scissor lift running commercial duty is one fluid top-off, one seal wipe-down, and possibly one full seal rebuild if the duty cycle is heavy.
