A tire-and-alignment shop owner in the Des Moines metro called us last fall about adding a portable auto scissor lift as a fourth working position in his shop. He already runs three permanent 2-posts, but every one of them is dedicated to alignment work during the daytime rush, which leaves no space for the differential fluid services and light drivetrain work that a tire shop increasingly gets asked to do. He didn’t want a fourth permanent lift because he’d lose flexibility. He wanted portable — something that rolls into a back corner during alignment hours and out into a working position when the day slows down. This article is the safety-first walkthrough we did on his install, and it maps to the same walkthrough we do on every tire-shop install we quote.

Slab evaluation for a tire shop that already has three 2-posts

The first stop on any safety walkthrough is the concrete. Even in a shop that already runs three permanent 2-posts, the fourth position — usually a back corner or a service-lane spot — often has thinner or older slab than the anchored zones. On the Des Moines metro shop we visited, the three 2-post positions had documented 5-inch pours with rebar patterns visible from the original install. The back corner where he wanted the portable auto scissor lift was original 1990s slab, and nobody had measured it in decades.

We ran two core samples with a rotary hammer near the target corner and found 4.25 inches of solid pour with rebar, which just cleared the manufacturer minimum for a 9,000-lb portable scissor. Had it come in thinner, our options were to pour a fresh overpour, use a steel load-distribution plate, or route the lift to a different corner. Documenting the slab check in writing is part of every commercial install we run because it protects the shop’s insurance, the manufacturer warranty, and our own liability. Rebar patterns and load-spreading physics

Rebar spacing matters as much as slab thickness. A 4-inch slab with rebar on 24-inch centers behaves very differently than a 4-inch slab with rebar on 12-inch centers under a concentrated point load. The pads on a portable auto scissor lift concentrate the vehicle’s weight onto four contact patches roughly the size of a coffee-mug bottom. Under a 6,000-lb vehicle, that’s about 1,500 pounds per pad on a footprint under 20 square inches — real concrete-crushing pressure at the point of contact.

Rebar spreads that load across the slab. On the Des Moines shop’s back corner, we confirmed the rebar was on 18-inch centers, which is adequate for a 9,000-lb portable scissor with the vehicle weights this shop typically services. If the rebar had been on 30-inch centers or missing entirely, we would have specified a steel load-distribution plate to spread the load. Physics doesn’t care about brand or price tag; it cares about area and reinforcement. A safety-first walkthrough respects that, and a shop owner who values his customers’ vehicles wants an installer who can explain the physics. If your installer can’t tell you what the slab is doing under the lift, get another installer. The concrete is the foundation of every other safety decision.

Arm restraints and the pre-lift check

Once the slab clears, we move to the mechanical safety walkthrough. Arm restraints on a portable auto scissor lift lock the swing arms into position under load so the pad can’t walk off the vehicle’s pinch weld during a service. On the models we spec for tire shops, the restraints use visible cam teeth on the arm gears, which lets a tech confirm engagement at a glance before pumping the lift up.

Our pre-lift check for tire shop work is a five-second discipline: pads on pinch welds, arms clicked into gear, cylinder rod clean, work area clear, remote at the operator’s hand. Five seconds prevents a pinch-weld failure that can cost the shop a bent rocker at best and a customer injury at worst. We trained the Des Moines shop’s three techs on the check during install and left a placard on the wall near the lift’s storage position. Every tech runs the same discipline every time. When we come back for warranty service, we ask the crew to demo the check for us. If they can, the lift stays out of trouble. If they can’t, we retrain. Safety is a habit, not a poster. A portable auto scissor lift that gets the pre-lift check every time is a lift that runs for a decade.

Safety-cam engagement and the live-drop demonstration

Below the arm restraints, the mechanical safety cams inside the scissor tower are the last line of defense. If a hydraulic hose fails, the cams catch the load. On the models we deliver, cams engage every two to two and a half inches of travel and auto-latch as the lift rises. We demonstrate that engagement on install day with a live drop: lift a real vehicle to knee height, release hydraulic pressure with the manual bleed, and let the cams take the load. The vehicle drops an eighth of an inch onto the cam plate and stops hard.

The Des Moines crew watched that demo with an F-150 on the lift. It’s the single most convincing moment in any safety walkthrough because it shows the cams doing what the sales brochure claims. Cheaper portable lifts either don’t have full-travel cam engagement or use friction locks that don’t ratchet. Under a customer’s vehicle, that difference matters. A shop owner who signs for a lift without seeing the cam-drop demo is buying blind. Ask for it, watch it happen, and if the sales rep can’t perform the demo on delivery day, walk away. This is one of the hard rules on our own delivery checklist: every commercial install ends with a cam-drop demo the crew has personally witnessed.

Differential fluid service — the tire shop’s new profit line

Once the safety walkthrough is done and the lift is in service, the actual work begins. Tire shops used to be tire-only, but modern customers increasingly ask their tire shop to handle differential fluid, transfer case service, and light brake work while the wheels are off. The Des Moines shop had been referring diff services to a general repair shop across town. After the portable auto scissor lift arrived, they kept it in-house and captured the revenue.

A typical rear differential fluid service on a half-ton pickup runs about 45 minutes on the portable scissor: position the lift, raise the truck to chest height, drain the diff, replace the gasket with silicone RTV or a fresh cork gasket, refill with 80W-90, and lower. The shop rate per service is meaningful and the tech doesn’t have to fight jack stands or slide under a working 2-post. By month three, they’d added transfer-case service to the menu too. The lift paid for itself on diff services alone inside eight months. That’s the practical case for adding a portable scissor to a tire shop that’s already at capacity on its 2-posts. Storage discipline in a busy shop

The other half of tire-shop safety is storage discipline. A portable auto scissor lift that lives in the middle of the shop floor becomes a trip hazard, a bumped-into-by-a-lifted-vehicle hazard, and eventually a scratched-up piece of equipment. On the Des Moines shop we painted a taped rectangle on the floor at the back corner marking the lift’s home position. When the lift is not in service, it lives inside that rectangle. Full stop.

The discipline sounds trivial and it isn’t. Techs in a busy shop are moving fast, and equipment that lives outside its designated storage spot gets bumped, tripped over, and worn down. Storage discipline extends the working life of the lift by years. It also keeps the shop’s OSHA record clean, which matters for the tire shop’s commercial insurance renewal. Ongoing safety inspection and the annual paperwork
