Step one: measure your ceiling before you measure anything else
Every decision tree we build with a restoration shop starts with a tape measure held straight up. In an older brick building west of the Cedar River, the finished ceiling is often somewhere between 9 feet and 10 feet 4 inches, and a lot of that already goes to a girder, a light track, or an exhaust rail we don’t get to move. A conventional two-post needs 11 to 12 feet clear over the arm and column, which is why so many northeast Iowa shops have quietly given up on the idea. A scissor doesn’t reach anywhere near that. The lift itself is only a few inches tall when fully collapsed, and even at full extension it puts the vehicle frame around 44 to 48 inches off the deck.
The roofline of the car is what sets your total, not the machine. Combine that with a portable base and you can wheel the whole unit out from under a low header when you need the full ceiling for a rotisserie job. Before you continue in the tree, measure three points: door-open clearance, the true finished ceiling under any obstruction, and the space above where you plan to park. If any of those are under 10 feet, this lift class is not just convenient, it is the only class that keeps the building intact.
Where a portable auto scissor lift beats a fixed two-post for restoration work
We spend a lot of time helping shops figure out when a portable auto scissor lift makes more financial sense than committing to a permanent two-post. Restoration work is the textbook case. You are not spinning ten oil changes an hour, you are on the same 1969 Chevelle for three weeks straight, then that car goes off the lift and does not come back for months. During those same three weeks you still need to slot in a state inspection, a customer’s daily driver check, or a rocker patch on a project you took in as a side favor.
A fixed two-post owns that bay whether it is in use or not, and the arms will not retract far enough to let a lowered muscle car walk in without dragging a nose spoiler. A scissor drops flat, rolls out of the way, and lets the bay behave like an open floor whenever you want it to. It handles frame-off work more elegantly too, because your frame rails are already up on the bench and the scissor gets under the completed shell for corner-weight checks or exhaust hangers without arms in the way. That flexibility is the whole argument for a portable auto scissor lift in a restoration environment. You are paying for a machine that vanishes when you don’t want a lift, and shows up when you do.
Reach requirements for annual state inspection work
Iowa’s periodic inspection routine, brake lines, exhaust, tie-rod ends, U-joints, ball joints, rocker rot, asks you to reach very specific points and hold the vehicle steady while you are there. A scissor puts the whole body up in a way that opens the underside like a book. You get free swing at the wheel wells, the crossmember, the rear axle boot, and the transmission crossmember without a column in the way.
For a restoration shop that runs inspections a couple mornings a week between deep jobs, a portable auto scissor lift is plenty. Where you have to be careful is arm reach. A frame-engaging unit with narrow pads is great for pickups and body-on-frame classics, but the newer unibody sedans you will still see rolling in for a plate renewal want a wider pad pattern and a rise to at least a comfortable underhood height. Ask the customer service line for the pad-to-pad footprint and the fully-raised height before you order. On restoration units we usually recommend the mid-rise class with adjustable stop positions so you can lock the vehicle at 24 inches for a quick fluid check or 44 inches to actually get a shoulder under the car and finish the inspection ticket without cramping your neck.
The click-stop locking system and why it matters
One thing we always explain in this tree is the incremental locking system. On a good portable auto scissor lift you are not stuck with all-the-way-down or all-the-way-up. There are lock positions roughly every two to two-and-a-half inches, meaning you can park the car at whatever height actually fits the job. On a lowered restoration car you might set the first lock two inches up just to get the exhaust off; on a dual-cab pickup coming in for a sway-bar link you might click it up to shoulder height so you can push instead of reach.
The two-inch resolution matters because it means the lift is not fighting you. You match the car and the job instead of shoehorning both around one fixed working height. It also matters for safety, because you are not depending on hydraulic pressure to hold the load. Once you set the lock at the height you want, the mechanical stops carry the weight and the pump only comes back on when you are ready to move again. Before you buy, ask specifically about the lock spacing. Some cheaper imports have three positions total, and we will not sell those. The ones we stock give you the full incremental range and a positive mechanical lock at every stop, which is the point.
The budget branch: where the decision tree splits
Here is the actual money math we run with a shop owner. Bottom branch: a lightweight mid-rise portable, capacity in the 6,000 pound range, adjustable stops, roll-away frame. This is a strong pick for restoration work on cars, anything from a Model A up through a modern coupe, and it is the lowest ceiling requirement in the tree. Middle branch: a heavier frame-engaging scissor, capacity 9,000 to 10,000 pounds, still portable but usually needing a hand truck or the crew to reposition. That is the branch for the shop that occasionally works on 3/4-ton pickups or a diesel dually project.
Top branch: full-rise scissor with drive-on runways, capacity 10,000 to 14,000 pounds, semi-portable in the sense that it moves with effort but usually stays in one spot. That is the branch for the shop doing alignments alongside restoration. Each branch has a different freight cost and a different power hookup, some are 110V single-phase and some need 220V. In our experience about eight out of ten northeast Iowa restoration shops we quote land somewhere between the bottom and middle branches. Which one depends less on the money and more on the truck question: are you working under 3/4-ton pickups more than once a month, or are you almost never touching them?
Door swing, roll-up tracks, and the will-it-clear test
We already talked about the ceiling. The door is the other half of the math, and it is the one that surprises people. A lot of northeast Iowa restoration shops sit in buildings where the roll-up door has a chain-drive spring assembly that hangs down 12 to 14 inches inside the header, plus a track that reaches back another two to three feet along the ceiling. That entire volume is off limits for anything that lifts a car straight up, and no amount of measuring the middle of the bay will save you.
A portable scissor is a graceful answer to this, because you park the lift ahead of that dead zone, usually right in the center of the bay, and then reposition when you need the door space open. Before you order, do the will-it-clear test. With the roof panel of your tallest common customer vehicle, a Ram 2500, an F-250, or a Suburban, fully raised on the scissor, does the roofline clear both the girder and the door track? Draw it on paper. We do this drawing with every shop before we quote, because there is no polite way to explain a bent roll-up to the customer after the fact, and no scissor lift on the market forgives a shop that skipped this step.
What install day looks like on a portable auto scissor lift
Once you have walked the decision tree, install day is easy, which is another reason the portable auto scissor lift beats fixed alternatives for restoration shops. The unit ships freight, arrives on a pallet, and one of two things happens. On the light mid-rise class, two people can uncrate it, roll it into place, plug it into a 110V outlet, cycle it up and down through the full lock range, and be ready for the first car by lunch. On the heavier drive-on class, you will want the 220V line pulled ahead of time and the concrete confirmed at four inches minimum.
There is no anchoring, that is the whole point, but you do want the floor level within about a half inch across the machine footprint.
