We get more questions about slab thickness, rebar spacing, and PSI ratings than about any other single topic, and most of the worry is misdirected. Myth One: You Need Six Inches Of Concrete

The most persistent myth in this whole category is that a portable lift needs six inches of concrete. That number comes from permanent 2-post commercial installations, where a heavy lift concentrates its load on two small column bases and drives real point-load stress into the slab. A portable lift is a different animal. A rolling four-post spreads its load across four wheeled column bases and typically has a much lower per-square-inch loading than a fixed lift. A mid-rise scissor loads its footprint through the whole base plate, which is even more forgiving.

For a portable four-post rated at 8,000 pounds, four inches of well-poured concrete with light reinforcement is almost always sufficient. For a mid-rise scissor at similar capacity, four inches is comfortably adequate. A slab that was poured without rebar but is still crack-free after twenty years is a better lift surface than a slab that was poured with rebar but has a network of cracks radiating across it. Look for cracks first, look for slope second, look for spalling third. The reinforcement type is a distant fourth. Don’t tear up a functioning slab to add rebar just because you read that you needed it.

Myth Three: PSI Rating Is The Key Number

Third myth is PSI. Residential concrete in Iowa is typically poured at 3,000 to 4,000 PSI, and shop pours may go higher. Buyers sometimes obsess over which PSI number their slab was poured to, as if the exact PSI determines lift compatibility. It doesn’t — not for a portable lift on a normal slab. The manufacturer minimum for most portable four-posts is 3,000 PSI, which nearly every professionally poured Iowa slab exceeds by design. If your slab was poured to any recognizable standard, you are almost certainly above the manufacturer minimum.

Where PSI does matter is at the very bottom of the residential range or when a slab was patched with a low-strength mix. If someone poured a low-grade mix as a repair patch on your garage floor and you plan to set the lift on the patch, that could be an issue. If your slab is uniform original concrete from a legitimate residential pour, PSI is not the number you need to worry about. Crack pattern, slope, and thickness are what matter. Focus your attention there instead of chasing PSI documentation you probably can’t get from a slab poured in the 1990s.

Myth Four: Slope Doesn’t Matter If The Lift Locks

Fourth myth cuts the other way — some buyers think slab slope doesn’t matter because the lift has caster locks and mechanical safeties. It does matter. A slab that slopes visibly across the intended lift footprint will make a rolling four-post want to drift when you unlock the casters to reposition it, will put uneven load on the four columns even when locked, and will make a mid-rise scissor sit slightly cocked on its base plate. None of these are catastrophic if the slope is minor, but they compound over time.

The check is simple. Lay a 16-foot straight-edge across the intended lift footprint in both directions. If the gap under the middle is less than a quarter inch, you are fine. If it is a half inch to an inch, you are on the edge. If it is more than an inch, you need to either level with a self-leveling underlayment or pick a different spot in the garage. A slab that slopes toward a drain, which many Iowa garages do, may still be workable if the slope is confined to one corner and your lift sits away from that corner. Check before you buy so you can position the lift correctly.

Myth Five: Spalling Means Time For A New Floor

Fifth myth. Spalling — the flaky surface deterioration you see on some Iowa garage floors from years of road salt — looks scary but is usually cosmetic. The structural concrete underneath the spalled surface is still intact. A portable lift sitting on a spalled surface may scuff off some of the surface layer during positioning, but it is not a functional problem for the lift or for you. Unless the spalling has progressed to visible aggregate exposure and softening, you can set a portable lift on it and it will work fine.

What you can do to clean up a spalled area is grind it flat and apply an epoxy coating. Metal Work Adds A Fire Consideration
