An overlanding builder in the Des Moines metro reached out to us in late 2024 while he was finishing the interior of a new four-stall shop dedicated to modified 4Runners, Tacomas, and expedition-built Sprinter vans. His job list revolved around transmission service, transfer-case work, and long-travel suspension installs. He wanted a portable scissor lift as one piece of a broader garage build-out, and he asked us to walk him through the sequencing. This case study captures that project from the first phone call through the first transmission drop on the new deck, including the sequencing decisions that saved him roughly two weeks of build time. The build-out problem: a four-stall shop with an unusual job list
The Des Moines overlanding builder was working out of a new 40 by 60 foot pole barn on the west side of the metro. Three of the four stalls were slated for standard two-post lifts. The fourth stall was the interesting one. He wanted a rolling deck that could be pulled into any of the three two-post bays when the two-post was already occupied, or that could work in its own dedicated corner. The vehicle mix was the driver: modified 4Runners with lifted suspensions, Tacomas with long-travel kits, and full-height Sprinter vans that would not clear his ceiling on any two-post at all.
A portable scissor lift is a natural fit for that mix because it does not need to reach the underbody the same way a fixed two-post does. Transmission drops on a lifted 4Runner or a Tacoma with a body-on-frame lift kit can happen with the deck at 30 to 42 inches of lift height because the vehicle is already sitting higher on its own suspension. That specific geometry means a rolling deck ends up doing more transmission work in an overlanding shop than it would in a stock-vehicle shop. We drew that math out for the builder in our first call and it changed his ordering sequence completely.
Garage build-out sequencing: what to install first and why
The builder’s original plan was to install the three fixed two-posts first and add the rolling deck at the end. We flipped that sequence for him and it saved him about ten working days of build time. The reason is boring but real: the two-post installs need concrete anchoring, and running concrete anchor work while the shop is otherwise dust-free means shutting down operations for the day. By taking delivery of the portable scissor lift first, the builder had a functioning work bay in the fourth stall while the concrete crew ran anchors in stalls one, two, and three.
That sequencing decision meant the shop stayed billable through the entire two-post install cycle. He completed two transmission jobs on paying customers during the same week the concrete crew was running the anchor sets. The revenue from those two jobs covered about a third of the rolling deck’s purchase price. Sequencing lift installs is not something most builders think about at the planning stage, and it is the piece we ask about first on every new-shop consultation. Get the rolling deck on the floor before the fixed lifts get anchored and you keep revenue flowing through what would otherwise be down weeks.
Choosing the specific portable scissor lift model for transmission work
Transmission service on a lifted 4Runner or Tacoma requires a specific working height and a specific deck length. The builder needed the deck to clear the transmission crossmember for removal, which meant the deck arms had to reach the frame rails cleanly without blocking the crossmember bolt access. We spec’d a rolling deck with a 78-inch runway, sliding pad extensions, and a maximum lift height of 44 inches at the pad. That combination handles the vast majority of overlanding-configured Tacomas and 4Runners without a workaround.
The Sprinter van case was the outlier. A cargo-height Sprinter is roughly 96 inches tall on the ground and often taller once the builder mounts a roof rack. The builder’s ceiling in that fourth stall is 11 feet 8 inches. That math means the Sprinter can raise to about 20 inches of lift height before the roof rack starts nudging the ceiling. Twenty inches is not enough for transmission work but it is plenty for oil service, transfer case drain and fill, and skid-plate installation. We flagged that limitation up front and the builder was comfortable with it. Honest limits stated at purchase are better than surprise limits discovered on the shop floor.
Electrical, hydraulic, and lock pawl setup during the install
The builder’s shop is on a modern 200-amp panel with 220-volt runs to each stall corner. That made electrical setup for the rolling deck trivial. We wired the receptacle at the corner of stall four and ran hydraulic bleed with the builder present so he could see the sequence. Bleeding the lines on a new install matters more than most owners realize; residual air in the hydraulic system causes uneven lift under load and can accelerate seal wear if not purged during the first cycle.
Lock pawl calibration was the other piece we did during install. The lock spacing on this specific model is two and a quarter inches through the travel range, and the pawls self-engage on the way up. We ran the deck through three full cycles empty to confirm every lock position engaged audibly and released cleanly. The builder ran the same three cycles under a loaded pallet after we left, which is the pattern we recommend for anyone taking delivery of a rolling deck. The mechanical safety on a portable scissor lift is only as good as the operator’s confidence in the pawls, and that confidence comes from cycling the deck and hearing every click before the first real vehicle rolls on.
First transmission drop on the new deck
The first paying job on the new rolling deck was a rebuilt transmission going into a customer’s third-generation 4Runner with a body-on-frame lift. The builder took a video of the whole process because he wanted to publish it on his shop’s social channels. The transmission drop took about 90 minutes with the deck at 40 inches of lift height and the transmission jack rolled underneath. That is roughly the same time it would take on a two-post, which surprised the builder honestly.
The specific advantage on this job was tool access. On a two-post, the columns are exactly where the builder wants to stand when he is aligning the input shaft to the clutch pilot bearing. On a rolling deck, there are no columns. He walked all the way around the transmission during the alignment and finished the install with the input shaft seated cleanly on the first try. That specific ergonomic difference is why overlanding shops keep buying rolling decks even when they already own two-posts. The tool-access geometry is measurably better for underbody drivetrain work on lifted vehicles.
Aftermarket parts, service intervals, and long-term ownership
The builder asked about long-term ownership before he placed his order, and we walked him through the same aftermarket parts inventory we walk every buyer through.
