Pre-delivery logistics call and site survey

Before we ship a single pallet, we run a pre-delivery logistics call with every fleet buyer. For the southwest Iowa county shop, that call took about 25 minutes. We asked about the road width leading to the shop, the driveway turnaround radius, the shop door width and height, and the availability of a forklift or telehandler on site. Small details matter. A 53-foot dry van needs about 65 feet of straight-line approach to swing into a rural driveway safely, and if the mailbox or a utility pole is inside that arc, the driver needs to know before the day of delivery.

We also flagged the overhead power line at the shop entrance. The dry van’s antenna and the pallet’s crated height stack up close to the line’s clearance during the swing. That is exactly the kind of detail that no manufacturer’s shipping page warns you about because they do not know your driveway. We do, because we call every buyer. Once we mapped the approach, we scheduled the delivery for early morning to avoid the county road’s afternoon farm truck traffic. Freight class, pallet dimensions, and lift-gate service

A portable scissor lift ships on a wood pallet at a total crated weight of 950 to 1,150 pounds depending on model and accessory kit. The pallet dimensions are typically 84 inches long by 44 inches wide by 36 inches tall, which fits any standard freight forklift and any decent telehandler. For fleets without a forklift, we can order lift-gate service on the truck, which adds a modest fee and a longer scheduling window because lift-gate trucks are less common than standard dry vans.

For the southwest Iowa county shop, the fleet’s own municipal maintenance yard had a Bobcat with pallet forks. That is a common rural-fleet setup and it worked fine for the unload. The Bobcat’s rated lift capacity was 2,200 pounds and the pallet came in at just under 1,050 pounds crated, which is well inside the safety margin. Do not assume the driver can hand-unload the pallet with a pallet jack because the crate is too heavy to move that way safely.

Unload sequence: driver, forklift, and pallet handling

The unload sequence itself is the piece we walk through step by step with every fleet manager. The driver stays with the truck. The receiving crew brings the forklift alongside. The tarp or shrink wrap comes off the pallet only after the pallet is on solid ground, not while it is still on the truck bed. Forks go under the pallet from the long side, not the short side, because the crate’s center of gravity is toward the long axis. That single detail prevents the crate from tipping during the lift off the truck.

For the southwest Iowa shop, the whole unload took under 15 minutes from arrival to pallet on the shop floor. That is the norm when everyone knows the sequence in advance. What is not the norm is what happens when the sequence has not been discussed. We have seen rural deliveries go sideways when a fleet crew tried to unload a pallet with a chain hoist and the crate rolled, or when a driver rushed the receiver into an unsafe forklift angle. None of those failure modes are the fault of the portable scissor lift; they are logistics failures. We prevent them by talking through the sequence twice before the truck rolls.

First-day setup: electrical, hydraulic bleed, and lock calibration

Once the pallet is on the shop floor, first-day setup begins. The rolling deck ships fully assembled but not fully commissioned. Electrical connection is first. This unit runs 220-volt single-phase service, which the county shop had wired to the alignment bay corner already. If your building does not have a dedicated 220-volt run, do that electrical work before the truck delivers, not after. We flag that requirement on every pre-delivery call and we still see about one shop a year forget it.

Hydraulic bleed is the next step. Air trapped in a new hydraulic system causes uneven lift travel under load, and if you skip the bleed cycle you accelerate seal wear from day one. We cycle the deck three to five times empty and check the fluid reservoir level after each cycle. Lock pawl calibration follows the bleed. Every lock position needs to engage audibly and release cleanly on the two-hand release control. A portable scissor lift with unverified locks is not safe to put a vehicle on. This whole first-day sequence takes about 90 minutes with our tech on site or on the phone walking the fleet’s maintenance lead through it.

Alignment bay integration and first squad car install

The county shop’s alignment bay was the specific home for this rolling deck. Alignment work is a specific use case for a portable scissor lift because it requires precise wheel position and the ability to spin the wheels freely. We spec’d this unit with turn plates and slip plates included in the accessory kit. Turn plates go under the front wheels for caster and camber measurement. Slip plates go under the rear wheels to allow the vehicle to move slightly as suspension settles during adjustment.

The first vehicle on the new deck was a county squad car needing a post-collision alignment after a rear-quarter repair. The county’s maintenance lead walked through the whole alignment cycle with us on the phone the first time. The deck held stable through the full sequence, the turn plates read correctly, and the alignment measurements matched the reference numbers on the second technician’s separate rack across town. That verification cycle confirmed the rolling deck was performing correctly for alignment work, and the county has run several alignment jobs on it since with no drift in measurement accuracy.

Daily walk-around and long-term maintenance cadence

Every fleet install we do comes with a printed daily walk-around checklist that lives on the wall next to the deck. Check the hydraulic fluid level. Look for weeping on any hose or fitting. Cycle the deck empty once. Verify the lock pawls engage audibly. Check the caster locks and the wheel condition. That five-item check takes three minutes at shift start and it prevents the vast majority of unplanned downtime we see on rolling decks across the region.

Long-term maintenance runs on a 24-month hydraulic fluid change and a quarterly lock pawl inspection.
