A portable vehicle scissor lift is not the default answer for a quick-lube franchise, but it is the right answer for a specific kind of quick-lube: the smaller independent operator adding differential fluid service, transfer case service, and light drivetrain work to a menu that used to be oil-and-filter only. We fielded a call in early spring from a franchisee running a two-bay quick-lube in southern Minnesota near Albert Lea who wanted to add differential service without committing to a full-height two-post lift install. This cost breakdown is exactly what we ran for him: lift, freight, electrical, install, and first-year operating cost. Real numbers, not marketing.

Lift Cost: The Sticker Number
A commercial-grade portable vehicle scissor lift for quick-lube service work runs in the low-five-figure range at sticker. That is for an ALI Gold certified unit with 6,000 to 7,000 pounds of capacity, alignment turntable pockets (which you probably will not use but they come with the unit), and a hydraulic power pack sized for 100+ lifts a day. The southern Minnesota franchisee compared three brands: Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak. All three were within a few hundred dollars of each other at that spec level. The differences were warranty length, parts network, and aesthetic. Function-wise, all three would do the same job for the same money.
What drives sticker price up or down: capacity above 7,000 (adds 15 to 20 percent), alignment kit above the standard turntable pockets (adds $600 to $1,200), and the extended commercial warranty (adds $400 to $800). For quick-lube differential service, you do not need any of those upgrades. Stay on the base commercial spec and you spend less and have less to break. The franchisee opted for a Rotary base commercial portable at the sticker in the low-five-figure range. That was line one of his budget and the number he had to justify to the franchise regional. It cleared without argument.
Freight to Southern Minnesota
Freight for a portable vehicle scissor lift from our Ames warehouse to Albert Lea is roughly 155 miles. LTL freight on a 1,700-pound crated lift on that route comes in around $250 to $400 depending on the carrier and fuel surcharge. If you want liftgate delivery (which you do for a quick-lube shop without a forklift), add $75 to $125. Total freight, delivered to your bay door with a lift-gate, is $325 to $525. That is the honest range.
What people miss: residential deliveries and after-hours deliveries add fees. A quick-lube shop is technically commercial, so you avoid the residential surcharge. But if you take delivery on a Saturday because that is your slow day, you may pay a weekend fee. Ask when you order. We schedule delivery for Tuesday through Thursday when possible to avoid weekend surcharges, and we can time it to arrive before your Wednesday oil-change rush. The southern Minnesota franchisee took delivery on a Wednesday morning; total freight came in at $380. That was line two of the budget. Small compared to the lift but not zero.
Electrical Work: The Hidden Line Item
This is where quick-lubes get surprised. Most portables want 208-230V power, single-phase for the lower-cycle units and three-phase for the higher-cycle ones. A quick-lube shop typically has 208V three-phase to the compressor, and running a new dedicated 208-230V single-phase circuit for the portable vehicle scissor lift is a modest electrical job, usually $400 to $900 depending on the run length from the panel to the lift park position. If your shop only has 120V outlets at the bay wall, you are ordering an electrical upgrade, not just a lift install.
Do this in the right order. Before you buy, have a local electrician quote the circuit run based on your panel location and the intended park position. Sometimes it is a two-hour job at $500 total. Sometimes the panel is on the opposite wall and it is $1,500. Neither is a problem if you know before you order. The Albert Lea shop had 208V three-phase to the compressor, five feet from the intended lift park position. His electrician ran a dedicated single-phase circuit for $475 including permit. Line three of the budget. If you skip this line, you take delivery of a lift you cannot plug in.
Install Cost: Owner-Install vs. Us on Site
A portable vehicle scissor lift is one of the few lift categories where owner-install is common and reasonable. If you have a shop tech who can read a manual and swing a wrench, install is a two-hour job that runs zero incremental cost beyond the lift and the electrical. If you want us on site, we can send a two-person crew from Ames to southern Minnesota for a half-day rate, delivered install package around $600 to $900 depending on the timing and route. That covers unload, positioning, wiring hookup, first-oil-check, safety walkthrough, and paperwork sign-off.
Which one is right for your shop is a judgment call. If you are opening a new store and everything is chaotic, pay for install and keep your team focused on the other 47 open issues. If you are operating a mature store with a good tech and you want to save the money, do it yourself and use our written setup guide. The Albert Lea franchisee chose owner-install because his lead tech had done it before at another location. Line four of the budget was zero. If you do owner-install, budget half a day of the tech’s time for the setup and safety walkthrough. That is real labor even if it is not an out-of-pocket cost.
Ongoing Operating Cost: Year One
A portable vehicle scissor lift used for quick-lube differential service runs about 40 to 80 cycles a week in a typical two-bay franchise operation. First-year operating cost is minimal: an initial oil change on the hydraulic system at 30 days ($25 in oil and filter), then a maintenance interval at six months ($40 in lubricant and inspection labor), and a first-year end-of-year annual ALI inspection ($150 to $250 for a certified inspection). Total first-year operating cost, roughly $250 including your own labor time.
Compared to the labor productivity gain, that is trivial. The southern Minnesota shop was moving differential service from a floor-jack process at 45 minutes per job to a lifted process at 20 minutes per job. Over 60 differential jobs a month at an incremental profit of $30 per faster job (labor savings plus better upsell rate on cabin filters and transmission service when the vehicle is up), that is $1,800 a month in incremental gross profit. The lift pays back in five to six months at that volume. That math is what justified the whole purchase to the franchise regional and it is the math worth running for your own shop.
Total Cost Roll-Up
Add it up. Lift: low-five-figure sticker (call for exact quote). Freight: $325 to $525. Electrical: $400 to $900. Install: $0 owner-install to $900 our crew. First-year operating: $250. Total first-year cash outflow for a portable vehicle scissor lift in a southern Minnesota quick-lube shop lands in the mid-five-figure range, roughly $12,500 to $14,500 all-in for a well-specced commercial unit installed and running. That is the honest budget number.
The franchise regional the Albert Lea owner reports to signed off in one meeting because we gave him a clean itemized quote. Regional VPs approve capital equipment purchases faster when the line items are clear and the payback math is real. If we had quoted a single number with no breakdown, he would have gone back and forth three times. That is a real lesson for any quick-lube operator dealing with corporate capital-approval processes: itemize, footnote every number, show payback math. We handle that documentation as part of our quote process. Just ask when you call. Our quotes are structured to survive an internal capital-approval review, not just to close the sale.
Where to Start
Start with a call to 800-674-9302. Have your bay dimensions, ceiling height, electrical service, and typical vehicle count per week ready. That is enough for us to spec a portable vehicle scissor lift, quote delivered freight to your zip, and give you an install estimate. Twenty minutes on the phone gets you a written itemized quote in your email that afternoon. Bring that quote to your regional or your bank and it will clear internal approval.

The Albert Lea shop is now running differential and transfer case service on the scissor, transmission drain and fill as an upsell, and has broken even on the equipment inside seven months. That is the standard payback profile for a well-specced quick-lube portable. If yours looks similar, we should talk.
