We flag one thing on every scissor unboxing: verify the arm-restraint pins, the safety-cam pawls, and the manual-descent lever are all present before you sign the BOL. Missing pins are a two-week freight-replacement lead time, and they will stop your install cold. Everything checked. The customer had already prepped his slab. The pour was ten years old but tested at just above four inches with a rebar mat, which is inside spec for the unit he bought. We set the anchor pattern with a rotary hammer the following morning. Arm restraints and how they behave in real use

On a 2-post lift, arm restraints are a set of geared or friction pawls that lock the swing arms against pivoting once the lift leaves the ground. Each pad arm has a locking mechanism, sometimes a spring-loaded detent, sometimes a positive pin, that has to be engaged once the pads are under the car and before the lift leaves the floor.
Our customer got in the habit fast: pads under, pins in, walk around the vehicle, tug each arm, confirm. What surprised him was how much play a pad arm has once you’re in the air, even with the restraint engaged. The arm doesn’t move, but the pad rocks a few degrees on its pivot when you’re loading a suspension arm from below. That’s normal on any scissor. The restraint keeps the arm from sliding, not the pad from articulating. We walked him through it on install day and again over the phone six weeks later when he pushed on a control arm and felt the pad rock. Nothing was broken. That behavior is by design and lets the pad follow chassis flex without pulling anchor pressure on the platform.
Safety-cam engagement and the sound you learn to listen for
Every full-rise scissor lift for automotive service uses a mechanical safety-cam ladder that catches the lift at fixed height increments. On his unit, roughly every two and a half inches from the middle of the raise cycle up to full extension. The pawls drop into the ladder under gravity as the lift rises, and you’ll hear each engagement as a distinct metallic click. If you’re paying attention, you can hear how the click changes over the life of the lift. A fresh pawl and clean ladder produce a crisp, single-note snap. As the ladder collects dust and the pawl pivots pick up grease and grit, the click gets softer, sometimes a little muddy.
Our customer developed the habit of running the lift up empty once a month, listening for six or seven clean clicks, and blowing the pawl housings out with compressed air if anything sounded off. That five-minute routine is the most important preventive maintenance he does. Before you work under any scissor, you lower the lift onto the safety cams — the park position — and you should feel the platform settle a fraction of an inch onto the pawls. If you don’t feel that settle, or if the pawls don’t audibly engage, you stop and figure out why before you go under. He printed that rule and taped it to the wall next to the control box. First suspension and shock replacement on the new lift

Six-month maintenance check and what wore first
