Why a Cedar Falls quick-lube added transmission service using a scissor lift for automotive bays

Transmission fluid exchanges and pan-drop services are the highest-margin add-on a quick-lube can layer onto an oil-change base, but they need a lift. The Cedar Falls operator had two bays: a drive-thru oil-change pit and a second bay with a heavy slab and enough ceiling for a lift. Full-rise would have doubled the price and cost him about eight inches of ceiling clearance he didn’t want to give up. The math was straightforward. Choosing the lift — capacity, footprint, and ceiling

We spent about forty minutes on the phone before we quoted anything. Capacity first: he wanted 6,000 pounds working capacity, which meant a mid-rise scissor sized comfortably above the heaviest F-150 in his customer base. Footprint next: his bay was 12 feet wide by 24 feet deep, and he needed the lift flush enough with the drive-thru path that a customer could approach and depart without a K-turn. He’d asked for a quality Rotary or Challenger commercial-rated unit, and we quoted both. Skip a filter change, skip the annual inspection, and the warranty on a hydraulic failure can be denied. We took photos, wrote up the finding, and submitted the claim to Rotary the same day. The manufacturer approved the claim inside 48 hours, shipped a replacement cable set out of their nearest warehouse, and we swapped both cables under the labor warranty at no charge to the customer. Total downtime was three business days.

For a quick-lube running three transmission services a day, that’s not nothing but it’s manageable. What made the claim clean was the maintenance log. He’d stayed current on filter changes and the six-month inspection was on schedule. If either had lapsed, Rotary would have had grounds to deny, and we would have had to negotiate.
