Restoration shops in the Quad Cities have a workflow that’s genuinely different from a quick-lube or a general repair shop, and the bay-layout math for a scissor lift for automotive restoration reflects that difference. You are welding under a car for hours at a time. You are pulling a fuel tank and rolling out a rear axle. You need to store the same project car in the air for weeks between phases. Owner-operators keep asking us which layout works better — a full-rise runway scissor along one wall or a pad-style scissor in the center of the bay — and the honest answer is it depends on your workflow mix. Shop A: Wall-Placed Runway Scissor

The first Quad Cities restoration shop we’re profiling runs pre-1975 domestic muscle in a converted grain-elevator space. Bay footprint is 18 by 40 feet with a 16-foot ceiling. Long, narrow, tall. The owner picked a full-rise runway-style scissor lift for automotive restoration placed against the south wall, runway aligned parallel to the long axis of the bay. That gives him a full-length walk-around lane on the north side, a rolling toolbox path along the runway, and enough overhead clearance to lift a fully-restored coupe to shoulder height for undercarriage paint.

Wall placement of a scissor lift for automotive restoration work has one big advantage: it puts the vehicle out of the traffic pattern. A restoration shop is constantly moving parts, welders, and half-finished sub-assemblies across the floor. If the lift is in the middle of the room every trip becomes a walk-around. If the lift is on the wall you get an aisle. The tradeoff is that you lose one side of underside access — the wall side. For most restoration jobs that’s fine because you can pivot the car on the runway to swap which side is exposed, but for hours-long welding work it matters.

Shop B: Center-Placed Pad-Style Scissor

The second shop runs European classics — a mix of vintage sedans and coupes — in a newer stand-alone building on the Iowa side of the river. Bay footprint is 24 by 28 feet, 14-foot ceiling. Wider and shorter than Shop A. This owner picked a full-rise pad-style scissor lift for automotive service placed dead center in the bay, with a 5-foot walk-around on all four sides. Tool storage lives on the walls, parts washer is against the back wall, welding cart moves in as needed.

Center placement gives 360-degree access to the vehicle underside, which is a real productivity gain for restoration work. When you’re pulling a rocker panel or replacing a floor pan you need to reach the same vehicle from three different angles in the same hour. A wall-placed lift makes you pull the vehicle down and repositon it. A center-placed lift lets you walk around it. The tradeoff is exactly what you’d expect: no through-lanes across the bay. Every trip is a route around the lifted vehicle. In a shop with just the owner and one apprentice, this is fine. In a shop with three techs sharing the space, it starts to feel constrained.

Metal Work and Welding Underneath

Welding under a car on a scissor lift for automotive restoration is one of the reasons owners upgrade from a floor jack in the first place. The comfort delta is real — an eight-hour floor-pan replacement done at chest height is a different job than the same replacement done on your back on a creeper. Both shops we’re comparing bought full-rise lifts specifically to get vehicles up to elbow-to-eye height for metal work.

The key detail for weld work is spark clearance. Sparks from a MIG or a plasma cutter fall — that’s obvious — but on a scissor lift the platform structure sits directly under the vehicle. Cheap scissors have exposed hydraulic hoses running through the platform structure that can catch spatter. Compliant restoration-grade scissors route hoses inside protected channels. When you’re speccing a lift for a weld-heavy workflow, ask specifically about hose routing under the platform. Rotary and Challenger both build to a hose-protection standard that we’re comfortable with. Bargain brands often don’t, and we’ve seen the hose damage that follows.

Long-Hold Storage Between Phases

Restoration projects sit for weeks between phases. Paint dries. Parts arrive on backorder. A rebuilt engine sits on a stand until the transmission comes back from the machinist. During those weeks the project vehicle is often up on the scissor, safe and out of the ground-level traffic. That storage requirement is the reason full-rise beats mid-rise for restoration — you want the vehicle at storage height, not at knee height where it blocks half the floor.

For long-hold storage the safety protocol is non-negotiable: the vehicle rides on the mechanical safety cam locks, not on hydraulic pressure. Every legitimate scissor lift for automotive service has safety cams that engage a toothed ladder at every notch. For overnight or weeks-long storage you raise to full height, release the up button, let the platform drift onto the highest lock, verify the audible engagement, then drop hydraulic pressure at the control panel. When you come back to the project, raise slightly to disengage the cam and lower normally. Both Quad Cities shops in this comparison run this protocol every time and neither has had a storage-related issue.

Underbody Access for Fuel Tank and Axle Work

Restoration work pulls a lot of underbody assemblies — fuel tanks, exhaust systems, rear axles, transmissions. A scissor lift for automotive restoration needs to give you enough vertical clearance to actually drop those assemblies without swinging into the platform structure. Full-rise pad-style scissors give the best clearance because the platform is only under the vehicle’s frame lift points, not across the whole underbelly. You can drop a rear axle straight down onto a transmission jack.

Runway scissors have runway rails across the wheel path, which is fine for a fuel tank drop between the frame rails but can conflict with a rear axle drop directly under a rail. Shop A works around this by pulling the vehicle forward on the runway before dropping the rear axle, giving the axle a clean drop zone off the back of the runways. Shop B just drops straight down through the pad geometry. Both work. If your restoration mix is 60 percent underbody-drop work, the pad-style has a small edge. If it’s 60 percent frame-off or floor-pan work, the runway wins because the runways brace the frame during frame work.

The Honest Choice for a Quad Cities Restoration Shop

Runway scissors are better for storage-heavy shops with narrow bays. Pad-style scissors are better for wheel-off-heavy shops with wider bays. For most Quad Cities restoration shops the deciding factor is bay geometry — if you have Shop A’s narrow-and-tall shape, you’ll be happier with a wall-placed runway. If you have Shop B’s wide-and-shorter shape, you’ll be happier with a center-placed pad-style. The lift itself is not the constraint. The bay is.

Budget-wise both configurations land in a similar range for a commercial-grade brand once you add freight and install. What differs is the accessory list — runway shops want the drive-off approach ramps and a good rolling jack setup for underbody drops, pad-style shops want tall stackable pad blocks and a spare pad set on the shelf. We spec both lists at quote time so you don’t discover on install day that the accessory you needed is a two-week backorder.
