Picking a scissor lift for automotive tire rotation and wheel work in a Dubuque restoration shop is not a single decision. It is a chain of them, and the order matters more than any single choice does. Get the budget right first and the configuration follows. Question 1: What Is the Real Budget?

Restoration shop owners usually give us a range on the first call. A scissor lift for automotive tire and wheel work sits in one of three broad price tiers. The entry tier covers pad-style low-rise mid-rise units suitable for pad work but not for anything requiring standing height. The middle tier is a full-rise passenger-car-rated scissor with a wheels-free platform. The upper tier is a heavier-capacity full-rise scissor with alignment-grade platforms and side-slip plates.

Which tier fits depends less on how nice the shop wants the lift to be and more on the mix of vehicles rolling through. A restoration shop doing frame-off builds on classic pickups is a different animal from one doing tire rotations on modern passenger cars. Ask the shop owner: which vehicle takes the most time on the lift? That vehicle drives the spec. The other 90 percent of the fleet fits under whatever the demanding vehicle needs. Every buyer wants to hear a magic number for budget; the honest answer is that the vehicle set determines the tier and the tier determines the number.

Question 2: Where Is the Lift Going to Sit?

Site survey second, because it can override the budget conversation. A gorgeous scissor lift for automotive service that will not fit through the shop door, or does not fit under the trusses, is a bad purchase at any tier. Measure the bay before you shop the lift, not after. Width of the door opening. Interior ceiling height at the lowest obstruction. Slab thickness if known.

Dubuque restoration shops range from mid-century brick storefronts with 9-foot ceilings and 8-foot doors to modern pole barns with 14-foot ceilings and 12-foot doors. The old building rules out most full-rise scissors immediately. The new building opens up every option. That saves the shop from falling in love with a lift model that cannot physically go in the space.

Question 3: Do You Need Wheels-Free or Frame Contact?

Tire and wheel work absolutely requires wheels-free. That means the vehicle is lifted by the frame, not by ramps that leave the wheels loaded. A full-rise scissor lift for automotive tire service accomplishes this with a platform that lifts the frame directly. A pad-style low-rise scissor does the same. Drive-on ramp-style scissors do not; those are alignment lifts, not tire lifts.

This one question eliminates roughly half the scissor category for a tire and wheel shop. The remaining half splits between pad-style low-rise (good for tire rotations at working height, less good for anything requiring you to stand under the vehicle) and full-rise wheels-free (good for both). Restoration shops that do a mix of tire work and other under-vehicle service usually land on the full-rise. Shops focused purely on tire rotations often prefer the pad-style because it is faster to lift and lower for a high-volume workflow. Neither is wrong; the workflow decides.

Question 4: How Does the Vehicle Enter the Bay?

Approach angle matters more on a low-rise scissor than on a full-rise. Restoration vehicles often ride low, and a scissor with a tall folded height may not clear a car that is 4 inches off the ground. Measure the lowest point of the lowest car and compare it to the lift’s collapsed height plus any ramp needed to get onto the platform.

The other approach question is space around the lift. Full-rise scissors bolt to the slab and stay in place. Pad-style low-rise scissors often ride on caster wheels and roll out from under the vehicle when not in use. That mobility is useful in a small shop but only if there is somewhere to roll them to. We ask restoration shops to draw the bay in plan view, mark where the lift will sit, and mark where it will be stored if it rolls. Ten minutes of drawing saves purchase mistakes that show up on install day.

Question 5: Capacity and Duty Cycle

A restoration shop lifting classic passenger cars needs less capacity than one working on trucks. A modest 6,000-pound scissor lift for automotive tire service covers most classic cars comfortably. Bumping to 9,000 or 10,000 pounds adds headroom for the occasional heavier vehicle and extends cylinder life for high duty cycles. Bumping to 12,000 pounds is overkill for cars but sensible for a shop that also services light trucks.

Duty cycle drives the same math from a different direction. A shop lifting 6 cars a day, 250 days a year, is running 1,500 cycles annually. A hobbyist-scale restoration shop lifting 2 cars a week is running 100 cycles. The higher the duty cycle, the more benefit from spending the extra tier for durability. Low duty cycle means the entry tier is often perfectly adequate. We tell restoration shops honestly that spending upmarket on capacity they will never use is money left on the floor.

Question 6: Electrical and Air Supply

Every scissor lift needs power. Some need shop air too for pneumatic lock releases. Do the electrical audit before committing: check the panel amperage, the available breaker slots, and the run distance to the intended lift location. Dubuque restoration shops with older wiring sometimes need a subpanel upgrade before adding a 220V circuit, and that adds real dollars to the total install cost.

Shop air is easier if there is already a compressor in the shop, which most restoration shops have. If the compressor is undersized, a scissor lift for automotive tire service that cycles the air release constantly will exercise the compressor more than expected. Undersized compressors run hot, wear pumps, and can leave you waiting for pressure between lift cycles. Question 7: Install Now or DIY Later?

Every restoration shop owner asks whether they can install the lift themselves. Some can. Some cannot. The install involves anchoring to a slab, wiring 220V, plumbing hydraulics, and running a break-in cycle. All of it is documented in the manual and any capable mechanic can follow it. The question is time, not skill: a DIY install typically takes a weekend of focused work.
