Myth 1: A Scissor Lift For Automotive Use Rarely Needs Cylinder Service
The internet loves to claim that a scissor lift for automotive service is basically maintenance-free because the cylinders are enclosed and sealed. That is half true. The cylinders are enclosed. They are not eternal. Every hydraulic cylinder has a rod seal, a piston seal, and a wiper, all of which are rubber compounds engineered for a service life measured in cycles, not years. The published expected life is typically 5,000 to 10,000 lift cycles for a well-maintained unit.
A busy EV shop doing differential fluid service and battery pack drops can burn through those cycles faster than a home garage does in a decade. Ignoring the schedule until you see fluid on the floor is the expensive way to learn this. The cheap way is a seal kit swap every three to five years, cost about the same as a set of good brake rotors, done in an afternoon. Sending the cylinder to a rebuilder adds a week of downtime and a couple hundred dollars in labor you can save. The place to send it out is when the rod itself is scored or the barrel is nicked, both of which need machining. Inspect the rod visually before ordering just a seal kit. If it is glass-smooth with no pitting, seals will fix it. If you can catch a fingernail on the rod surface, ship it or replace it. Myth 4: A Slow-Drift Lift Is Immediately a Cylinder Problem
Slow drift (the lift settling an inch or two after being locked up) is the symptom shops most often blame on cylinder seals. Sometimes that is right. Just as often the real culprit is a stuck check valve in the hydraulic power unit, a dirty velocity fuse, or a leaking hose fitting. All three are cheaper and faster to fix than a cylinder rebuild, and diagnosing the actual problem before ordering parts saves the shop a lot of wasted effort.
The diagnostic sequence is straightforward. Raise the lift, engage the mechanical locks, and watch. Myth 6: Rebuilds Extend Life Indefinitely
