Install cost varies by geography. In southwest Iowa, most family shops have a slab poured in the 1970s or 1980s, which usually means 4-inch concrete with unknown rebar. Nothing breaks catastrophically; things simply wear.

Expected consumables over twenty years: two cylinder seal kits, one full cylinder rebuild or replacement around year twelve, one contactor replacement around year eight, one hydraulic fluid flush every five years, and quarterly greasing of the safety-lock and pivot points. Total consumables cost lands in the low four figures over the full lifespan — a fraction of the initial purchase. This is why the twenty-year math favors the mid-tier or high-tier scissor. Cheap purchase price, expensive rebuild pipeline is the wrong tradeoff.

Cylinder seals and the rebuild kit pipeline

Here’s where family-shop math gets sharp. A scissor cylinder is a wear item. It doesn’t fail; it seeps. When it seeps enough that the lift creeps down under load, it’s rebuild time. A rebuild kit for a common brand-name scissor cylinder runs in the low three figures and takes an experienced tech two to three hours. A full replacement cylinder is mid three figures to low four figures depending on brand.
