Sizing a scissor lift for automotive service inside a dealership bay is a very different exercise than sizing one for a home garage. The bay is fixed. The workflow is fixed. Your service manager has minute-by-minute repair-order targets, and the layout of the lift dictates how many stalls he can turn over in a shift. Dealerships and scissor lift for automotive service: the real dimensions

A dealership service bay along the Iowa-Nebraska border averages fourteen feet wide by thirty feet deep with a fourteen-foot ceiling. That is the size we design around. Inside that envelope a full-rise scissor lift for automotive service occupies a runway spread of about seven feet six inches wide and drive-on runway length of eighteen to twenty feet. That leaves you three feet on either side to walk, roll a tool cart, or swing an air hose. The runway length gives you room to lift full-size trucks with an eight-foot bed, which matters more every year as pickups grow.

Compare that to a two-post which needs a column-to-column spread of eleven to twelve feet at the base and swing-arm reach that eats into your walking space when the arms are extended. In the same fourteen-foot bay the two-post feels tight when the arms are out. The scissor feels open. That layout difference is the single biggest reason we quote scissors to dealerships when the vehicle mix runs heavier toward pickups and SUVs and lighter toward sedans.

Bay width: how much you actually need

The published width spec on most commercial scissor lift for automotive systems is twelve feet minimum. That is not comfortable working width. That is minimum-to-operate. To actually walk a tech around the vehicle without turning sideways, add two feet on each side to the runway envelope. So a seven-foot-six runway spread wants at least eleven and a half feet of interior bay width, and comfortable is fourteen. If you have a thirteen-foot bay you can absolutely make it work. You just live with slightly less walkaround room on one side.

The exception is inspection stalls. If the bay is used purely for state safety inspections or oil-change ticket workflow, you can drop to twelve-foot bay width because the tech is under the vehicle briefly and not living there. For diagnostic bays where techs are working under the vehicle for an hour at a time, fight for the fourteen. Your techs will notice. So will your fixed absorption on that stall six months in.

Ceiling clearance and full-rise scissor geometry

The full-rise number to know is that most commercial scissor lift for automotive equipment tops out at seventy-two to seventy-eight inches of runway height, which means the vehicle roof sits between ten feet six and eleven feet six above the slab depending on vehicle height. A fourteen-foot ceiling gives you comfortable headroom over any passenger car or light truck. A twelve-foot ceiling starts to squeeze on lifted pickups and full-size SUVs, and you either accept partial-rise use or you plan for slightly less lift range.

What changes the math is overhead obstructions. HVAC ducts, sprinkler heads, and light fixtures rarely sit at true ceiling height. Measure to the bottom of the lowest obstruction, not to the ceiling. In a dealership build we typically survey every bay individually because ductwork is rarely uniform. We have quoted jobs where three of eight bays could support full-rise scissors and five needed to be repositioned to align the runway with an unobstructed lane.

Runway length vs full-rise pad spread

Runway length matters when you are lifting long-wheelbase pickups. A crew-cab F-250 has a wheelbase near 176 inches and an overall length north of 22 feet. On an eighteen-foot runway the truck fits with about six inches of overhang on each end. On a twenty-foot runway you have a comfortable foot of margin. If your dealership sells and services heavy-duty pickups, spec the twenty-foot runway. If you are servicing a mixed passenger fleet where the biggest vehicle is a midsize SUV, eighteen feet is fine.

Pad spread on a full-rise scissor lift for automotive service is fixed by the frame width of the lift. Unlike a two-post you do not adjust arm reach for narrow versus wide vehicles. That is a feature, not a bug. Techs do not have to think about arm setup. They just drive on and lift. In a high-throughput dealership bay that shaves fifteen to twenty seconds off every repair order, which adds up when you are running eighty tickets a day.

Airflow, power, and drop locations

The hydraulic power unit on a commercial scissor lift for automotive service pulls a 230-volt single-phase or 208-volt three-phase circuit depending on the model. Amperage draw peaks around twenty amps on startup. In a dealership build you want a dedicated circuit per lift with a disconnect on the wall behind the power unit. Do not share circuits across two lifts. We have troubleshot startup faults on shared circuits that took a full afternoon to diagnose only to trace it back to breaker sizing.

Drop locations for compressed air, electric, and fluid dispense should all sit on the same wall as the hydraulic power unit. That keeps hose runs short and gives the tech a single wall of infrastructure to reach for during a repair. Avoid dropping air or fluid from overhead reels in the middle of the bay unless you have already committed to that layout. Overhead drops interfere with full-rise scissor operation and force the tech to duck around hoses when the vehicle is at working height.

Sequencing multiple scissor lift for automotive installs across a dealership

When we install four or eight bays at once we sequence carefully. The service manager keeps the shop open during installation, and we work bay by bay. Typical schedule is one bay per day for a straightforward install, one and a half days for a bay that needs slab work or electrical upgrade. We start furthest from the service entrance and work back toward the door so the finished bays can be commissioned while the newer ones are still under construction. This keeps the shop earning revenue during the transition.

Coordination with your electrical contractor is the piece that goes wrong most often. Confirm circuit availability before the lift ships. Confirm disconnect locations before the electrician runs conduit. And confirm the panel schedule labels which breaker feeds which lift. We keep a template we hand to dealer electricians on install day because we have seen enough panels with unlabeled breakers that it costs less time to hand out a template than to argue about it later.

What we tell service managers before they sign

Three things. First, if your ceiling is fourteen feet and your bay is at least thirteen wide, the scissor lift for automotive dealership work is almost always the right call for anything but heavy-duty diesel bays. Second, plan the electrical and slab work into the equipment quote from day one because retrofitting either after the lift is anchored costs three times what it would have cost to do it right on install day. Third, get the operator training and buy the extended warranty because a dealership rack sees three to five times the cycles of a private shop rack and you want the coverage.
