Used versus new — the honest starting point
Used scissor lifts do sell on the market, and if you’re patient and picky you can find a serviceable unit at meaningfully below new-lift pricing. The honest tradeoff is that a used commercial scissor at typical resale age — five to fifteen years old — is at or past the midpoint of its expected service life. Everything mechanical on the lift has some remaining useful life, but the cables, cylinders, hoses, and pump are all closer to end-of-life than beginning.
If you’re buying used, you’re buying the frame and the safety-cam ladder and accepting that you’ll be replacing wear items on the manufacturer’s original schedule counted from year one, not from your purchase date. For a home-garage buyer running a lift 30 or 40 times a year, used can be a great deal. For a tire shop running a lift 30 or 40 times a week, used is a shorter-term bet with more downside risk. Our IA-NE border customer had already run one lift into the ground and was open to considering used, but he wanted to understand what he was buying. That’s the right posture. Anyone selling you a used commercial lift who won’t walk you through wear-item remaining life is not the seller you want to buy from.
What to inspect on a used scissor lift
If you’re seriously considering a used scissor lift for automotive shop work, there are seven items to inspect before you write a check. One, safety-cam ladder condition — pawl faces, ladder rungs, engagement clicks. Two, equalization cables — full length inspection, any fraying at swaged fittings, any pulley bearing that isn’t turning freely. Three, hydraulic cylinders — seepage at rod seals, any pitting on the visible rod section. Four, hydraulic hoses — cracking at bends, wear from platform articulation. Five, powerpack — noise level, pressure test to spec, filter condition. Six, arm-restraint mechanism — pin engagement, spring detent function, pad rocking under load. Seven, anchor pattern from the previous install — is the slab pattern going to match your bay, or are you drilling new holes and abandoning old ones.

That’s the trap in used equipment — sometimes the parts refresh cost approaches the delta between the used price and a new unit. Do the inspection before you commit. If you can’t physically inspect the lift before purchase, do not buy it. Photos are not enough. Video is not enough. Feet on the ground and hands on the parts, or walk away. A new scissor lift for automotive shop work gets you three things a used one can’t: full manufacturer warranty from day one, the full service life of every wear component starting fresh, and installer support from someone who put the lift in the ground. On the warranty piece, a new commercial scissor typically carries a five-year structural, two-year hydraulic, and 90-day wear-item warranty. Any of those coverages on a used unit are typically expired or non-transferable.
On the service life piece, cables and cylinders on a new lift give you seven to ten years before scheduled replacement is even on the horizon, versus a used lift where you might be replacing them in year two or three. On the installer support piece, if we install your new lift, we come back for the six-month check, we’re on the phone for troubleshooting, and we handle warranty claims through the manufacturer on your behalf. On a used lift bought from a third party, all three of those pieces are on you. For a high-duty shop, those three items usually justify the delta over a used unit. For a home garage running twenty jobs a year, the math can go the other way. Duty cycle is the deciding factor.
Daily maintenance routines that keep either safe

Every tech in the shop should know where that lever is, how to reach it without going under the lift, and what the descent behavior sounds like.
Second: lockout-tagout. When the lift is being serviced — cable inspection, hydraulic work, any component check that requires you to be under the platform — the lift needs to be locked out at the disconnect and tagged, and the platform needs to be resting positively on the safety cams. Never trust hydraulic pressure to hold the lift while you’re under it. On our customer’s old unit, he’d developed the discipline over 15 years, and he wrote it into the new operator training the day the new lift arrived.
