A scissor lift for automotive RV and trailer service in central Iowa is a slightly unusual purchase – most lifts are built around passenger cars or medium-duty trucks, and RV service means longer wheelbases, higher center of gravity, and driveline geometry that does not fit standard lift arm reach. We installed one last summer at an RV and trailer service shop about 40 minutes south of Ames, and 12 months in the shop has learned a lot about what works and what needed tweaking. This is a first-year ownership story with the concrete tradeoffs the shop owner made along the way.

Choosing a scissor lift for automotive RV service

The shop owner called us in January knowing he wanted a lift but not knowing which kind. Most RV service shops we consult with default to a four-post lift with extended runways because RVs are long. That is the right answer for full-length RV service (Class A, Class C, larger fifth wheels), but this owner mostly worked on Class B camper vans, small trailers, and toy haulers under 30 feet. For that mix, a wide-platform scissor lift for automotive service turned out to be the better tool. The scissor gave him undercarriage access that a four-post’s runways would have blocked, and the wider platform accommodated dual rear wheels on the larger Class B vans.

The tradeoff was capacity ceiling. Scissor lifts top out at 15,000 to 18,000 pounds for the commercial-grade units, which is enough for a Sprinter-based Class B (typically 8,500 to 11,000 pounds gross) but not enough for a 25,000-pound Class A. He drew the line – no Class A work in his shop, everything Class B and below – and that constraint made the scissor decision clean. This is the key first move for any RV shop: define your vehicle mix first, then pick the lift that fits it. If Class A is in your mix, this article does not apply and you need a heavy-duty four-post or drive-on scissor instead.

Install week and what surprised us

Install day started rough. The shop’s concrete slab, poured in the late 1990s, turned out to be five inches at the front but only four at the back after a slope correction. Not a dealbreaker for the scissor lift, but the anchor torque numbers came in lower on the back anchors, and we had to add larger-diameter anchors and re-drill. That added about two hours to the install. Second surprise: the 220-volt drop the shop had installed the week before was on the wrong side of the bay – we ran the lift power cord across the bay ceiling on hooks rather than making the electrician come back. Ugly but functional. Owner fixed the drop location two months later.

Everything else went as planned. The scissor cycled clean under a Bobcat weight test, the safety locks engaged at every position, and we walked the owner and his one employee through the safety checks and daily operation. Total install time: about seven hours instead of five. First lesson from a first-year RV shop install: verify the slab thickness in multiple spots and confirm the 220 drop location visually before install day. The two hours of surprise on install day cost less than either surprise would have cost a week later, but both were avoidable with 30 minutes of pre-check.

First month: exhaust workflow around a scissor lift for automotive

Exhaust work was the shop’s first real workflow challenge with the new scissor lift for automotive RV service. Class B vans on Sprinter chassis have a mid-frame exhaust routing that runs almost the full length of the vehicle, and the standard lift arm placement puts one arm pad directly under the exhaust routing on the driver side. The shop’s workaround: offset the vehicle by four to six inches on the platform, which shifts the pad off the exhaust hanger and clears the whole exhaust system for hangdown work. That is a five-second adjustment every time a Sprinter comes on the lift, but nobody thought about it until the third Sprinter of the month.

The other exhaust workflow tweak was tool positioning. The owner initially kept his exhaust cutter and welder cart at the north wall of the bay, but exhaust work on a lifted Sprinter meant walking 12 feet to the cart every time he needed the cutter. He moved the cart onto a low roll-around that lives under the lift while the vehicle is elevated. Cost: $180 for the roll-around. Time saved per exhaust job: about 15 minutes. Small optimization but the difference between a shop that flows and a shop that walks. First-month lesson: real workflow reveals itself only after you have run the same job three times on the new lift.

Driveline access on RVs and travel trailers

Driveline work – universal joint replacement, driveshaft balancing, transfer case service – needs specific access geometry that a scissor lift for automotive service handles differently than two-post or four-post lifts. On a two-post, the driveshaft hangs completely clear. On a four-post, the driveshaft sits between the runways. On a scissor, the driveshaft is over the lift platform, which sometimes means removing the driveshaft with the pad arm still in the way. The RV shop we set up in central Iowa learned this early. Solution: on driveline jobs specifically, they position the vehicle 8 to 10 inches further forward on the platform so the rear pad arms sit ahead of the driveshaft flange.

That position shift means the rear pad contacts the frame further forward than the manufacturer’s suggested pickup point, which is fine as long as the frame section is rated for lift contact there. The owner and our tech walked through the Sprinter chassis service manual together and confirmed the forward pickup point was within spec. On travel trailers, driveline is not usually an issue since most trailers do not have driveshafts, but tandem-axle brake work has a similar geometry problem – brake drum access on the front trailer axle can be blocked by the front pad arm if the trailer is positioned incorrectly. Position matters more on RVs than on passenger cars, and a scissor lift for automotive RV work requires more setup thinking per job.

Service events in the first six months

Six-month service log on this shop’s scissor lift for automotive RV service: one hydraulic hose replacement at month four (caught during the daily check – small weep at the fitting), one contactor cleaning at month five (chatter under load, cleaned and re-seated without replacement), and one cable tension adjustment at month six (routine, part of the six-month service). Total downtime across all three events: about four hours cumulative. Total parts cost: $85 for the hose, zero for the contactor cleaning, zero for the cable adjustment (routine service).

That is a healthy first-six-months profile for a commercial scissor lift for automotive service in an RV shop cycling 15 to 25 vehicles per day. The daily safety check caught the hose weep two weeks before it would have become a lift-shutdown event. The contactor chatter was diagnosed on a phone call – we walked the owner through pulling the cover, cleaning the contact surfaces, and re-seating the springs. Twenty minutes of shop time versus a service call. The cable adjustment was baked into the routine service visit. Lesson: a commercial-grade lift with a disciplined daily check catches problems small. A residential-grade lift with no daily check turns those same problems into shutdowns. Trailer-specific challenges the shop did not anticipate

Travel trailers introduced problems the scissor lift design did not fully anticipate. Trailer tongue weights concentrate load at the front of the trailer, which means when the trailer is on the lift, the front pad arm bears more than half the total weight. On smaller trailers this is fine – 3,500-pound trailer, front pad might see 2,000 pounds, well within spec. On larger toy haulers (10,000 pounds gross), the front pad can see 6,000 pounds, which is close to the per-pad limit on a 15,000-pound-rated lift.

The owner solved this by positioning larger trailers with the tongue removed or resting on a floor stand, distributing the trailer weight more evenly across all four pads. That is a workflow constraint, not a lift limitation, but it took two months of RV shop work to figure out. The other trailer surprise was axle brake access on tandem-axle setups – the front axle brakes are shadowed by the trailer body if the trailer is positioned with the front tongue over the lift’s front pad. Repositioning the trailer with the tongue behind the front pad opens the front axle brake access. Again, workflow adjustment, not lift redesign. Trailers reward operator experience more than any other vehicle type on a scissor.

What the owner would do differently next year

One year in, the shop owner’s list of what he would change is short but specific. First, spec the wider-platform option from the start. His lift has the standard-width platform, and while it handles Class B vans, it is tight on the larger trailer widths. The wider platform is a $600 up-charge at purchase and much harder to retrofit later. Second, place the 220-volt drop before the lift is installed, not after – the two-month gap of running the power cord across the ceiling was ugly and cost him about $200 to fix later. Third, ask for the six-month service visit as part of the purchase agreement instead of as a separate call. It is included with most of our commercial installs anyway, but formalizing it in writing makes the calendar reminder automatic.

It handles his vehicle mix, the driveline and exhaust workflow works with practice, and 12 months of service events have been minor.
