An independent pro shop owner in the Quad Cities called us this spring shopping a scissor lift for automotive service — specifically the oil-pan gasket work that had been eating three bays and half a tech’s day on jack stands. He was comparing two configurations against each other: a full-rise pad-style scissor and a mid-rise scissor with drive-on runways. Both would fit his bay, both would land the vehicle at working height, but the freight logistics, the anchor pattern, the daily workflow, and the honest downsides were very different. We wrote him a side-by-side, delivered one of the two four weeks later, and this article is what that comparison actually looked like.

The two configurations we put on the table

Configuration A was a full-rise pad-style scissor lift for automotive frame work — the vehicle rides on rubber pads under the pinch weld, the deck lifts to about 74 inches, and the tech gets a clean tunnel down the centerline for driveline, exhaust, and pan work. Configuration B was a mid-rise scissor with drive-on runways — the vehicle stays on its wheels, the runways lift to about 48 inches, and the tech works standing under the front subframe or reaching in from the outboard side. Both have their place; both fail at different jobs.

His question was oil-pan gasket work on late-model half-tons and mid-size SUVs. On those trucks the pan is directly behind the front crossmember and the drain plug is buried between the exhaust crossover and the transfer case. The full-rise lets you drop the crossmember off the pan and pull it straight down without fighting the runway edge. The mid-rise keeps the front wheels loaded so the suspension geometry stays put, which matters when you are working around the steering rack. Neither is universally right, and the honest answer depends on the job mix.

Oil-pan gasket work: which deck actually helps

He was doing roughly eight to ten pan-gasket jobs a month between GDI carbon buildups on Ecoboosts and the usual Duramax and Cummins rear-main jobs that turn into pan pulls. On the full-rise pad-style, we timed a technician doing a Silverado 5.3 pan drop at 2 hours 40 minutes, versus 4 hours 20 minutes on the same truck on jack stands with a floor jack and a transmission jack. That is a huge shop-hour delta at billed rates, and it comes almost entirely from having the driveline tunnel open under a scissor lift for automotive service.

The mid-rise drive-on was slower on the same job — closer to 3 hours 15 minutes — because the runways get in the way of a straight-down pan drop and force the tech to angle the pan out past the runway edge. Where the mid-rise won was tire rotations, brake pad swaps, and alignment prep because it does not need pad-placement time. If you are running a shop where 60% of the work is brake and tire and 20% is pan-gasket, the mid-rise pencils out. If pan work is your bread and butter, the full-rise is the right call every time.

Freight, LTL, and unloading in the Quad Cities

Freight is where a lot of pro-shop buyers get surprised the first time they order a scissor lift for automotive use. Both configurations we quoted him shipped LTL on a common carrier, palletized, banded, and shrink-wrapped. The full-rise pad-style crated in around 1,350 pounds; the mid-rise drive-on with the runways was closer to 2,100 pounds because the runways add serious steel. LTL rates from our Ames warehouse to the Quad Cities on either unit run roughly the same because it is a class-based rate, not a weight-based one, at those dimensions.

What changed between the two was unloading. The full-rise crate is one pallet, one lift, forklift on and forklift off. The mid-rise ships on two pallets — deck assembly and runways separately — and needs staging room to swap the runways onto the assembled base. He had a docked bay with a forklift on-site, so neither was a hardship, but if you are ordering into a shop without a dock, tell your installer up front. We route the truck differently and sometimes prepay a rollback wrecker to get the crate off the trailer without an insurance claim for tipped freight.

Forklift access and pallet handling on the shop floor

His shop has a 5,000-pound electric forklift and a single roll-up door onto the shop floor, which is exactly the layout we prefer for a scissor drop. On install day we forked the full-rise crate off the LTL, wheeled it to the bay, cut the banding, and lifted the assembled base into position with the fork straddling the deck. Total elapsed uncrate-to-bolted was about 90 minutes for the full-rise. The mid-rise takes longer because you position the base, forklift the runways up onto the base, then bolt the runway hinges — call it 2 hours 15 minutes elapsed with two techs.

The forklift matters more on the mid-rise. On the full-rise you can move the base with pipe rollers and pinch bars if you have to; on the mid-rise the runways are unwieldy without power. If you are a shop without a forklift buying either configuration, plan on renting a Bobcat with fork attachment for the day, or plan on a slower install. We have installed both configurations without a forklift by hand-walking with pipe and dollies, but we charge for the extra labor and it turns a one-day job into a day and a half.

Anchor pattern and slab prep

Both configurations anchor to the slab, and both want the same 4-inch minimum pour at 3,000 PSI. The full-rise pad-style uses a compact anchor pattern under the base — call it a 30-by-60-inch footprint of anchors — and it lives inside the pad footprint, so nothing is exposed to a rolling vehicle. The mid-rise drive-on has a wider anchor pattern outside the runway footprint because the runway hinges pivot from the base, and those anchors are the ones that see the vehicle drive-on load every time a car rolls up.

His slab was a 5-inch commercial pour with rebar on 12-inch centers, so anchor was not going to be a problem for either configuration. If you are considering a scissor lift for automotive service in an older shop with a thin or cracked slab, we core-sample before we quote, because a bad slab under a scissor is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Saw-cut and repour a 6-by-8 pad if that is what the slab needs. It is cheap insurance and it takes the shop out of service for three days, not three weeks.

Which configuration he actually chose

He picked the full-rise pad-style. The deciding factor was not the pan-gasket time savings, though that mattered; it was the fact that his bay was 14 feet 6 inches wide and the mid-rise runway swing needed 15 feet 4 inches of clear width when the runways were fully deployed. The full-rise fit inside his bay with 18 inches of walkway on each side. The mid-rise would have crowded the wall on one side, and we did not want to bolt down a lift that pinched his tech every time he opened the driver’s door. Bay width killed the mid-rise; it was not the workflow.

The install landed on a Wednesday in April, and by Friday he had done four pan jobs on it. Two months in he told us he was quoting one more bay’s worth of the same configuration, because the tech he had been paying overtime to finish pan work on jack stands was now clearing two jobs in the same shift. That is the win from picking a scissor lift for automotive service correctly — you buy back tech hours, and the lift pays for itself in about eleven to fourteen months at his shop’s billing rate on the jobs it actually accelerates.

What we would say to any Quad Cities shop shopping a scissor lift for automotive work

Measure your bay before you shop. The single biggest configuration mistake we see is a shop specing a mid-rise drive-on into a bay that will not clear the runway swing, or specing a full-rise pad-style into a bay too shallow for the arm reach at the pinch weld. Both configurations are excellent when they fit; both are miserable when they do not. The second piece of advice is to think about the freight and the forklift before you sign the order.
