If you are a weekend hobbyist in Cedar Rapids looking at a scissor lift for automotive exhaust and driveline work in your home shop, this is the pre-purchase checklist we walk through on every phone call before the freight leaves our Ames warehouse. There is a version of this decision where you buy the wrong deck for your ceiling, a version where the baseplate versus overhead question sneaks up on you, and a version where you end up loving the lift because you thought about the details before you clicked buy. This article is the checklist that gets you to the third version, in the same order we run through it on the phone.

The overhead vs baseplate question does not apply to scissors — here is why

First, the myth to kill. Overhead versus baseplate is a two-post configuration decision, not a scissor decision. Two-post lifts have a hydraulic line and safety cable running between the columns; if that runs across the top of the columns it is an overhead configuration, and if it runs across the base of the columns it is a baseplate configuration. A scissor lift for automotive service does not have that column, that cable, or that line — the whole hydraulic assembly is under the deck. So if a salesperson is asking you overhead versus baseplate on a scissor, either the wrong question got asked or the wrong lift got quoted.

What the question usually means when a first-time buyer asks it about a scissor is really “how much overhead clearance do I need,” which is a real question. A full-rise scissor needs 10 feet of ceiling; a mid-rise needs 8 feet; a low-rise needs 7 feet. Confirm your ceiling height first, then match the scissor rise to it. That is the substance behind the overhead-versus-baseplate concern, and it is the first checklist item we walk buyers through before we quote anything else.

Measure the bay in three dimensions before you shop

Second checklist item is the actual bay measurement. Ceiling height wall-to-slab is one number, but you also need bay width wall-to-wall at the widest and narrowest point, and bay depth door-to-back-wall. Most home garages are wider at the middle than at the roll-up door, and both dimensions matter for a scissor lift for automotive work because the deck needs clearance to descend into the fully collapsed position without hitting the wall. A collapsed scissor deck is roughly 24 to 30 inches wide at the base and 100 to 120 inches long depending on model.

The third dimension is door opening width. You have to actually get the vehicle onto the lift, which means the roll-up door has to be wider than the widest vehicle you plan to service. A Chevy Silverado is 82 inches wide with mirrors folded, and most double-car garage roll-ups are 96 inches, so that is fine. If you have a single-car roll-up at 84 inches and you plan to lift a dually pickup at 96 inches wide with mirrors, you are going to end up folding mirrors every time you pull in. Measure before you buy.

Ceiling height and the full-rise cutoff

Third checklist item is confirming full-rise capability against your specific ceiling. A full-rise scissor lift for automotive exhaust work is worth spending the money on if your ceiling supports it, because exhaust hangers and mid-pipe joints happen at heights that only full-rise gets you to comfortably. If your ceiling is 9 feet 6 inches and you drive a truck, run the math: 74 inches of pad plus 76 inches of vehicle plus 6 inches of headroom equals 156 inches, which is 13 feet. You do not have 13 feet, so full-rise for a truck is off the table.

The same math with a Miata or a Camry works fine at 9 feet 6 inches because the vehicle is only 50 to 57 inches tall. Full-rise scissor plus low sedan equals a working height of 74 inches of pad at the roof, well under 9 feet 6 inches. Which vehicle you plan to work on the most is the deciding factor here. If your daily is a truck and your project is a coupe, size for the truck. If both are cars, size for the taller of the two plus 6 inches of buffer.

Exhaust and driveline access on the deck you are considering

Fourth checklist item is the exhaust and driveline workflow, which is the whole reason a hobbyist buys a lift in the first place. On a full-rise pad-style scissor lift for automotive service, the deck sits under the pinch weld, and the tunnel between the pad rails runs bumper-to-bumper down the centerline of the vehicle. Exhaust bolts on the flange come out with a straight-up angle drill; hanger cuts happen at chest height; driveshaft U-joints grease directly overhead without a stretch. The workflow is essentially the same as a two-post, minus the column dodge.

Where a scissor is not as good as a two-post is walking the length. On a two-post the vehicle sits between columns and you walk from front bumper to rear bumper on both sides without an obstruction. On a scissor the deck is under the vehicle so you cannot walk the length; you work from the outboard side and reach in. That matters more for header install than for cat-back swaps or muffler jobs. For 95% of the exhaust and driveline work a weekend hobbyist actually does, the scissor is fine. For the one job a year that needs long-tubes on a track car, borrow time on a two-post.

Slab and anchor confirmation

Fifth checklist item is the slab. Home-garage slabs from the last 40 years vary wildly, and the honest first step is knowing what you have. If your garage was built new in the last 20 years and the builder followed code, you have 4 inches of 3,000-PSI concrete with wire mesh or rebar. That is fine for a scissor lift for automotive use at any capacity we sell. If the slab is older or homeowner-poured or added-on, it may be 3 inches, and 3 inches is too thin for the anchor pattern to torque to spec without spalling the surface.

How you confirm slab thickness without ripping up the floor is to drill a test hole with a 3/8-inch masonry bit in an out-of-the-way corner and measure how deep the bit goes before it breaks through into subgrade. That is the fastest, cheapest slab audit you can do. If it comes back at 3 inches or less, plan on either a saw-cut-and-repour under the lift base or a repositioning of the lift to a section of slab that measures 4 inches or better. We do not install onto 3-inch slabs, and no reputable installer will.

Power, freight, and the day-of logistics

Sixth checklist item is the boring stuff — 220V within pendant reach, freight access to the driveway, and a plan for uncrating a 1,300-pound pallet. Most home garages built after 1980 have a 220V circuit for a dryer, but it is not in the garage; getting one into the garage is a separate electrician trip. Budget for that if you do not have one. If your electrical panel is in the garage, adding a 220V circuit is a half-day job for a residential electrician. Do it before install day, not after, because we will not cycle-test the lift without the power live.

Freight is the other logistical piece. LTL delivery to a Cedar Rapids residential address is typically curb-drop with liftgate service — the driver drops the pallet at the curb, and you get it into the garage from there. If your driveway is narrow, sloped, or gravel, tell your installer up front. Uncrating on a driveway and rolling components into the bay is a two-hour job with pipe rollers and a floor jack. If you have a friend with a Bobcat, that is faster. We will coordinate all of this on the phone before we schedule.

The final go-or-no-go call on a scissor lift for automotive purchase

Once the six checklist items are answered — clearance, dimensions, ceiling, exhaust workflow, slab, and logistics — the buying decision usually falls into place. If you have 10 feet of ceiling, 4 inches of good slab, a 220V circuit, and a bay wide enough for a collapsed deck, a scissor lift for automotive service is going to be one of the best home-shop upgrades you ever make. If any of those answers is no, we would rather tell you that on the phone than sell you a lift that does not fit your garage and end up with a return-freight bill on the wrong side of the ledger.
