A rural farm shop owner outside Dubuque called us this spring about adding a scissor lift / portable to his operation. He runs annual state inspections on the trucks his hired crew drives, plus year-round maintenance on the pickup fleet and a handful of side-work vehicles for neighbors. The interesting part of the conversation was the electrical side — his shop was built in the 1970s with a service panel that hadn’t been upgraded, and we needed to work out whether the lift he wanted could actually run without pulling new copper. This checklist is the same sequence we walked him through, and it applies to any Iowa farm shop considering the same purchase.

Start with the electrical panel

Before we spec a lift, we ask a farm shop owner to send us three photos: the service panel with the cover off, the wall where the lift will live, and a shot of the ceiling. The panel photo tells us the incoming service size (100 amp, 200 amp, or 400 amp), how many empty breaker slots exist, and whether the panel is single-phase or three-phase. Most farm shops in eastern Iowa are single-phase 200-amp, and a lot of the older ones are still 100-amp with a farm-load subpanel. A scissor lift / portable needs its own dedicated breaker, and if the panel is full you’re either adding a subpanel or upgrading service before the lift installs.

The Dubuque farm shop had a 200-amp main with two empty slots and a legacy 60-amp welder circuit that hadn’t been used in years. We told him to have his electrician verify the welder circuit was cold and either repurpose it for the lift or leave it dead. He chose to repurpose, which saved him a new circuit run and about six hundred dollars in labor. That kind of decision only gets made if someone actually looks at the panel first. We don’t quote lifts without seeing the electrical side of the shop, because too many quotes fall apart at install time when the circuit turns out to be inadequate for the actual load.

Circuit sizing and phase for a scissor lift / portable

Scissor lifts vary widely in power draw. A light-duty low-rise pad lift can run on a standard 120V 20-amp circuit. A mid-rise 9,000 lb commercial unit typically wants 220V single-phase on a 30-amp dedicated breaker. A heavier 12,000 or 15,000 lb unit may want three-phase, which most farm shops don’t have. Before you commit to a scissor lift / portable model, verify that the phase and amperage match what your building actually delivers. This is not the place to guess. The Dubuque owner initially wanted a 12,000 lb three-phase unit because he’d seen one at a friend’s dealership shop. We explained that converting his farm shop to three-phase would cost more than the difference between the two lifts, and that a 220V single-phase 9,000 lb unit would handle his fleet — half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups, a couple of dump beds under 8,600 lb GVWR — with comfortable margin. He went with the single-phase model. A year in, he told us he had never needed the extra capacity, and the electrical cost savings paid for one full year of shop insurance. Sizing to what you actually service, not what you might service, is the discipline we push on every farm-shop quote.

The vehicle mix: what does the shop actually service

A scissor lift / portable is not the right tool for every farm shop workflow. Before we quote one, we walk through what the shop actually services during a typical year. The Dubuque owner listed six pickups, two flatbeds under 10,000 lb GVWR, a small skid steer, and a farm truck that carried grain. The farm truck was the interesting case because at loaded weight it exceeded any portable scissor’s capacity. He agreed up front that the farm truck stayed on jack stands, and the scissor handled everything else in the fleet.

That kind of honest scoping matters for annual state inspections too. Iowa doesn’t require an annual safety inspection for personal vehicles, but the DOT-regulated commercial trucks he ran for a small hauling side-business did need an annual inspection. Those inspections require lifting a truck to check brakes, tires, and suspension components. A scissor lift / portable rated for the truck’s actual weight is fine for the inspection work. Going oversize would have cost him a lot for capacity he wouldn’t use ninety-five percent of the time. When you look at your own vehicle mix, the ninetieth-percentile job matters more than the max job, and the max jobs go on stands.

Slab and mounting: portable doesn’t mean weightless

Portable in this category name is a bit misleading. A commercial-grade rolling scissor weighs between 1,200 and 2,000 lbs, and when you’re operating it on a farm shop concrete slab, the load per pad footprint is significant. Older farm shop slabs — poured in the 60s or 70s — are often four inches thick, minimally reinforced, and sometimes cracked. Before we install a scissor lift / portable on that kind of slab, we do a visual crack survey and a hammer sound test, and we probe around any suspicious spots. If the slab is compromised, we recommend a targeted concrete repair before the lift arrives.

The Dubuque owner’s slab was solid four-inch concrete with light rebar, poured in 1978 and still in reasonable shape. We measured slab thickness in three spots by drilling small pilot holes near the planned lift location — a technique any commercial concrete contractor can do in a couple of hours. It came back consistent at 4 to 4.5 inches, no rebar hits, but no voids either. We cleared the install and specified pad orientation that spread load across the widest possible slab area. A year in, no cracks, no settling. Small pre-purchase steps like this prevent big install-day surprises for both the shop owner and our install crew.

Local access and delivery: farm-road realities

Delivering a scissor lift / portable to a rural address requires a plan. The Dubuque shop is on a gravel road with a mile of driveway that gets soft in spring thaw. We scheduled delivery for late July when the road was firm. Our truck is a 26-foot box with a lift gate, and we specifically confirmed the gate could reach the shop floor’s grade. On some farm sites we’ve had to shuttle the lift from the end of the driveway to the shop with a customer’s tractor because our truck couldn’t make it in. Discussing that logistics piece before delivery day saves a costly re-schedule.

For extreme rural sites we’ve offered a swap-and-deliver option where we bring the lift on a smaller trailer that the customer’s four-wheel-drive equipment can handle. It costs a little extra but it eliminates the risk of a stuck delivery truck. Farm shop owners who plan for this in advance never have a problem. The ones who don’t sometimes end up with a lift crated on a pallet at the end of their driveway during a rainstorm. We handle either scenario, but we prefer to plan ahead with you rather than improvise on delivery day when things are stressful.

Budget honesty: what you’re really paying for

The all-in cost of a scissor lift / portable for a farm shop includes more than the lift itself. Here’s the checklist we walk through: the lift purchase price; delivery to your address; any electrical work needed to run a dedicated circuit; any concrete work if the slab is questionable; pad accessories for your specific vehicle mix; and a first-year service plan if you want one. For the Dubuque farm shop, the lift was the largest line, followed by concrete verification, followed by the electrician’s bill for the circuit repurpose. Delivery was included in our quote from the start.

We give farm shop customers a written quote that itemizes every line, including the rough electrical estimate from a partner electrician when we have one available. That transparency matters because farm operations plan capital expenses months in advance, and a surprise electrical bill after delivery is not the way to start a decade-long lift relationship. The Dubuque owner told us later that seeing every number on paper before he committed was one of the reasons he chose us over a big-box quote he had received. Our checklist you can use before you call

Here is the checklist we now send farm shop customers before we quote a scissor lift / portable: photograph your service panel with the cover off; photograph the wall and floor where the lift will live; measure your ceiling clearance from the floor to the lowest obstruction; list every vehicle you regularly service with weight in pounds; note whether your slab is younger or older than 1990; check whether your access driveway can handle a 26-foot delivery truck; and confirm whether you have a licensed electrician you already work with. Seven items, mostly no cost to answer.

Those seven answers get us to a sizing and pricing recommendation on the first call. Sometimes the answer is that a scissor is not the right choice — for a farm shop that lifts heavy grain trucks, a four-post might make more sense — and we say that when it applies. Sometimes the answer is that you’re perfectly sized for a mid-rise and we can quote you in twenty minutes. Either way, walking through this checklist first respects your time and your money.
