A tire and alignment shop owner in West Des Moines called us last month about adding a scissor lift / portable for oil changes and quick fluid service. He had a specific concern — safety. His shop had a good record but he wanted to make sure that adding a scissor rather than a permanent two-post didn’t introduce risks his techs didn’t know how to manage. That conversation turned into this safety-first walkthrough, which we now share with every commercial customer considering a portable scissor for high-volume routine work. The stakes are real, but the risks are manageable if you understand them before you buy the equipment.

Why safety comes first with a scissor lift / portable
Every lift carries risk, and a scissor lift / portable is no exception. The core hazards are: overloading the lift beyond rated capacity; unbalanced load placement that puts the vehicle off-center on the platform; operator error during the raise or lower cycle; safety catch failure; and hydraulic failure. Any one of these can drop a vehicle onto a tech, and the industry knows about several fatal incidents each year across the U.S. from lift failures. Those numbers are relatively small compared to other shop hazards but they concentrate around specific patterns, and understanding those patterns is the first step in avoiding them.
The West Des Moines shop owner had read enough safety literature to know he needed a plan. We built that plan with him over three phone calls before we ever quoted a lift. First, we identified the vehicle mix and set a hard maximum weight for what would go on the scissor. Second, we specified an ALI Gold-certified unit. Third, we scheduled a formal operator training session at delivery. That three-part process — vehicle mix limits, certified equipment, formal training — is our recommended safety baseline for any commercial shop, and we won’t install a lift without at least the first two components in place.
ALI Gold certification and what it verifies
ALI stands for the Automotive Lift Institute, and its Gold Label is the only third-party certification in the U.S. verifying that a lift design meets the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard for construction, testing, and validation. Buying an ALI Gold-certified scissor lift / portable means an independent lab has tested the design under load, verified the safety catches, and confirmed the hydraulic system will hold in a fault condition. For a commercial shop, the difference matters legally as well as physically. OSHA doesn’t explicitly require ALI Gold certification, but insurers do — most commercial liability policies for auto repair shops now name ALI Gold as an acceptable equipment standard, and some outright require it. Your workers’ comp premium can also be affected by the equipment you use. We only sell Gold-certified lifts and we register the certification with the shop’s records at install time, which means if you ever need to prove compliance to your insurance carrier, the paperwork is on file with us and with ALI. That’s a service, not an extra fee, and we think it should be industry standard.
Daily inspections that actually matter
A daily inspection on a scissor lift / portable takes ninety seconds and should be part of every shop’s opening routine. The checklist is straightforward: verify the hydraulic fluid level in the sight glass; look for oil weeping around the cylinder rods; check the pad brackets for loose or missing bolts; test the safety catches by lowering the empty lift and listening for the click at each locking position; verify the emergency-descent valve is capped and untouched; and confirm the wheels and caster locks work in both directions. Anything abnormal in that inspection is a stop-work condition until we take a look at it.
The West Des Moines shop laminated our one-page daily inspection sheet and mounted it on the wall next to the lift. Every morning the opening tech signs off with a checkmark and initials. That habit is worth more than any training video because it creates a paper trail and it makes the inspection a routine rather than something skipped when the day is busy. In a year of use, they’ve caught two minor issues on morning inspection that would have become bigger problems if they had been missed. Both were user-repairable and cost nothing but a phone call to us to confirm the fix.
Load positioning: getting the pads right every time
Load positioning is where new operators tend to make mistakes. A scissor lift / portable raises a vehicle by whatever surface is on the pads, and if the pads aren’t under structural frame points, the vehicle can rock or slide off during the lift cycle. The correct pad points on a modern car are usually marked in the owner’s manual and shown as small triangles or arrows on the frame or rocker panel. On trucks the pad points are typically along the frame rails a few inches inboard of the pinch welds.
Getting the pads right every time is a discipline. We train new operators to look up the pad points for any unfamiliar vehicle before positioning the lift, not during it. For high-volume shops, we recommend building a shop reference book or a laminated poster with the pad points for the ten or fifteen most common vehicles the shop sees. The West Des Moines shop did exactly that and taped the reference to the wall behind the lift. Every tech uses it as a check before they raise the vehicle. That kind of tool-and-process design is what turns a scissor lift / portable from a hazard into a routine piece of shop equipment.
Emergency descent procedures
Every scissor lift / portable has an emergency descent procedure for the situation where power fails or the hydraulic system loses control while a vehicle is in the air. The procedure varies by model but usually involves cracking a specific manual valve on the hydraulic pack to bleed the cylinders and lower the vehicle slowly to safety catch positions. That procedure needs to be practiced by every tech, not just read once from the manual and forgotten.
We ran a dry-fire practice with the West Des Moines shop’s techs at install time — empty vehicle, safe conditions, hands-on practice of the emergency descent sequence. Every tech went through it once. That fifteen minutes of training would be the most important fifteen minutes in the entire lift’s life if a real emergency ever happened. It hasn’t in their case yet, but they’ve kept up quarterly refreshers as part of their safety program. Insurance loves that documentation trail, and the techs report that knowing the procedure eliminates a lot of the anxiety around what to do if the lift ever quit mid-cycle. Safety training that’s actually practiced is better than training that only sits in a binder.
Tech training: the difference between a floor jack habit and a lift habit
Techs who come to a scissor lift / portable from years of floor jack experience carry some habits that need adjustment. On a floor jack, you position from beside the vehicle and you have direct visual on the contact point. On a scissor, the pads are set once and the lift raises the vehicle straight up, so if the initial positioning was off, you don’t get a chance to correct it mid-lift the way you would while pumping a floor jack. The mental model shifts from continuous adjustment to careful setup then execution.
New operators sometimes want to reach in and adjust something while the lift is mid-cycle. That’s a firm no in our training. If the setup is wrong, lower the lift, correct the setup, and start over. This rule is not negotiable and the West Des Moines shop trained every tech on it before they touched the lift solo. We also train them not to shortcut the safety catch engagement — a fully raised vehicle should be resting on the safety catches, not held by hydraulic pressure alone. Both of these habits are easy to teach and easy to forget when a shop gets busy. Building them into muscle memory during the first month is the goal.
The safety culture you build around the lift
Safety with a scissor lift / portable is not really about the lift. It’s about the culture around the lift. Shops that treat lift safety as a checkbox get accidents eventually. Shops that treat it as a daily practice — inspections, positioning discipline, emergency procedure fluency, and continuous training — don’t. The West Des Moines shop had already built a strong safety culture around their two-posts before we arrived, and adding a scissor was a natural extension of that existing discipline.
