A dealership service manager working near the Iowa-Nebraska border reached out about integrating a scissor lift / portable into his wheel-bearing bay. His main lifts were four four-post units running full-time on express service, and he had been losing wheel-bearing tickets to a competitor because his techs couldn’t get onto a lift fast enough. He wanted a mobile lift he could roll into any express bay for a quick wheel-off job, then roll out of the way when finished. The technical deep-dive he asked for included real dimensions, real weight ratings, and real workflow modeling. Here is what we walked him through over three calls and a site visit.

The dealership problem: bay contention on wheel-bearing work

A dealership express service bay is optimized for oil changes and tire rotations. Four four-post lifts, one tech per lift, in and out in twenty minutes. The problem this service manager was facing is that a wheel-bearing job takes forty-five minutes to an hour and needs the wheel off, which a four-post doesn’t natively support without a wheel dolly. When a wheel-bearing customer walked in during a busy express hour, one four-post got locked up for an hour, blowing the express service cadence and delaying oil change customers behind it. Over six months of that pattern, he calculated a loss of roughly $22,000 in redirected service revenue.

A scissor lift / portable was his proposed solution — a fifth lift, mobile, that could roll into any express bay’s aisle during a wheel-bearing job and free up the four-post for its rotation cycle. On paper it made sense. The technical deep-dive was needed to confirm the physical fit, the workflow math, the power supply, and the integration with the existing bay design. Dimensions and clearance for a scissor lift / portable in a shared bay

Dealership express bays are typically 12 feet wide by 24 feet deep, with the four-post lift eating roughly 8 feet of that width. The remaining floor is a 4-foot aisle on one side plus the entry area at the front. A scissor lift / portable in the mid-rise commercial size runs about 84 inches long by 42 inches wide at the platform, plus another 8 inches on each side for safety catches and pad brackets. That footprint fits in the aisle if we’re careful, and it fits under the four-post at the raised height because the four-post’s runways are about 62 inches off the floor when parked at the top position.

The scissor lift / portable’s platform height at full extension is 44 inches for the model we recommended. That means a technician working on a wheel bearing is standing at floor level, reaching up to the wheel hub at chest height. Comfortable, no bending, no ducking. The vehicle above him has clearance under the fenders for wheel removal because the vehicle is raised straight up rather than tilted. We measured the specific bay dimensions from photos the service manager sent, and the fit was tight but workable. Real dimensions matter and a lift decision made without measuring the bay is a lift decision that fails at install time.

Weight ratings and dealership vehicle mix

Dealership vehicle mix at this location was primarily domestic sedans, crossovers, and half-ton pickups, with a growing share of full-size SUVs. Peak-hour vehicle weights ranged from about 3,200 lbs on the lightest sedan to about 6,500 lbs on the heaviest loaded pickup. A scissor lift / portable rated at 9,000 lbs handled the entire fleet with 30 percent margin, and we recommended that capacity for exactly that reason. Going bigger to 12,000 lbs would have cost more, taken more floor space, and offered no working benefit for their typical vehicle mix.

We also verified the max wheelbase they would service — 133 inches on the longest crew-cab pickup — against the scissor’s platform-length spec. The 84-inch platform supports a wheelbase up to about 175 inches with proper pad placement, so no issue. Wheelbase-to-platform sizing is the most commonly missed spec on a scissor lift purchase. Some cheaper units have platforms too short to safely lift long-wheelbase trucks even at rated capacity. We spec’d the deep-dive customer with room to spare, and he had confidence that any vehicle in his standard mix would fit without workaround. That confidence matters when you’re integrating new equipment into a running dealership.

Workflow modeling: minutes per job

Workflow modeling was the interesting piece. The service manager wanted to know how many minutes per wheel-bearing job the new scissor lift / portable would save versus his existing process. We built a spreadsheet with him. Old process: pull vehicle into express bay, put on four-post, tech works around wheel-off with wheel dolly for 55 minutes, another vehicle waits. New process: pull vehicle into express bay, roll scissor into aisle, position pads on vehicle, raise on scissor, tech works standing at floor level for 42 minutes, four-post stays free for the next express customer.

Time savings per job: 13 minutes on the wheel-bearing side, plus 55 minutes of freed four-post time for another express customer. Total addressable revenue recovery: 68 minutes per wheel-bearing job. At his labor rate and his six-per-week wheel-bearing volume, that came to roughly $780 in weekly revenue that had previously been going to a competitor. Twelve-month payback on the lift purchase was well under six months. Modeling is not a substitute for reality — some assumptions won’t hold — but it’s a way to sanity-check a purchase decision. His numbers held once we deployed the lift and tracked actual cycle times for a quarter.

Integration with existing four-post lifts

Integration with four-posts was a workflow question, not a physical one. When a wheel-bearing customer arrives, the service writer routes the vehicle to a specific express bay that has been designated as the scissor bay for the day. The tech at that bay parks the four-post at its top position with no vehicle on it, rolls the scissor lift / portable into the aisle beside it, positions the customer’s vehicle over the scissor, and works. The empty four-post above him is not in the way. When the wheel-bearing job is done, the vehicle comes off the scissor, the scissor rolls to its parking spot, and the four-post is ready for the next express customer.

Rotating which bay is the scissor bay each day balances wear and gives the shop flexibility if one bay is down for maintenance. We helped the service manager write a one-page workflow document for his advisors and techs that laid out the sequence. That document lived on the service manager’s wall and got reviewed with new hires. Integrating new equipment into a working dealership means the workflow paperwork matters as much as the equipment itself, and getting the process on paper before the lift arrived kept the first week of use from turning into confusion.

Power supply on a dealership floor

Dealership floors typically have plentiful electrical service. This location was 400-amp three-phase with dedicated circuits for each four-post. We had our pick of power options for the scissor lift / portable, and we chose 220V single-phase on a dedicated 30-amp circuit routed to the scissor’s usual parking area. That location gave us a coiled cord long enough to reach into any of the four express bays without extension cords, which are a safety issue on a shop floor. The electrician for the dealership handled the circuit run in a single morning.

Three-phase would have been slightly cheaper on lift purchase, but the coiled cord and the mobility of the scissor lift / portable across bays worked better on single-phase because we could reuse an existing service loop rather than run a new dedicated three-phase circuit to every bay. That’s an integration detail, not a technical superiority argument, but on this specific dealership floor it was the right call. What the deep-dive concluded

The deep-dive concluded that this dealership should buy a 9,000 lb ALI Gold-certified scissor lift / portable with adjustable pad brackets, 220V single-phase power, coiled cord to reach four bays, and a documented integration workflow with the four-post lifts. The service manager wrote the purchase order the following week. Delivery and install were straightforward. Three months in, his wheel-bearing revenue was up meaningfully and his express cadence had recovered to the pre-problem baseline.

The lesson from this install is that dealerships have workflow patterns that reward a mobile lift when the fixed lifts are already at capacity. If your dealership has the same problem — a class of work that gums up your express bay throughput — a portable scissor might be your answer. If your dealership has plenty of bay slack or a different vehicle mix, the math might land differently.
