Vehicle Storage Lift for Brake Service: Des Moines Myth-Busting for European Shops

European-marque specialty shops in the Des Moines metro come to us assuming a vehicle storage lift cannot do proper brake service. That assumption is why they keep a two-post lift in one bay for wheels-off work and never think seriously about a four-post as a service lift. But the assumption is wrong on modern lifts, and the difference matters when you are stacking cars in a 4-bay West Des Moines shop that services BMWs, Audis, and the occasional Porsche. This piece myth-busts the most common brake service and warranty misconceptions, using patterns from the last dozen European-shop installs we have done in the metro.

See 4-Post Lifts for European Shops →

Rotary and Challenger 4-post lifts spec’d for European marque service, including brake work and rotor swaps with proper jack-tray configuration.

Myth 1: You cannot do brake service on a four-post

Every European specialty shop we quote in Des Moines opens with this one. The truth is that any four-post vehicle storage lift equipped with a sliding jack tray does brake service just fine. The workflow is: drive the vehicle onto the platforms, raise to working height, engage the mechanical drop-in safety locks, slide the bridge jack under the axle you are working on, and raise that corner until the tire lifts off the runway. Now you have wheels-off access with the vehicle mechanically secured at height.

Brake pad swaps take the same time on a four-post with a jack tray as they do on a two-post. Rotor swaps and caliper R&R work the same way. The one thing you cannot do easily is a full four-corner brake job simultaneously, because you can only lift one axle at a time on the bridge jack. On a two-post you have wheels-off at all four corners at once. If your shop does two full brake jobs a day, that difference matters. If you do one every other day, it does not.

Myth 2: European car rotor sizes will not clear the jack tray

Second common myth. BMW M3 front rotors are 15 inches. Audi RS Q8 fronts are 17.3 inches. The largest front rotor on a common European vehicle is right around 17.5 inches. A properly spec’d jack tray on a modern vehicle storage lift has 22 to 26 inches of open depth below the raised platform, which clears any European brake package on the market. The trap is that some cheaper import lifts ship with shallow jack trays that will not clear a 15-inch rotor. Do not buy that lift.

When we quote a European specialty shop, we spec the jack tray depth against the largest brake package in the shop’s vehicle mix. That is usually an RS-model Audi or a Cayenne Turbo. We check the OE brake diameter and pad thickness, add 2 inches of tolerance for the caliper carrier and the rotor edge, and confirm the tray clears. It always clears on the Rotary and Challenger platforms we recommend. On other brands, verify before you buy. That five-minute check saves a $6,000 mistake.

Myth 3: Warranty only covers the frame

Buyers often assume a manufacturer warranty on a vehicle storage lift covers the structural frame and nothing else. Actually, on Rotary and Challenger commercial lifts the coverage is layered: structural elements 5 to 25 years, hydraulic components 12 to 24 months, electrical components 12 months, and wear parts (cables, sheaves, seals) 6 to 12 months. Read the fine print for your specific model. If a hydraulic seal fails at month 15 on a Rotary, that is not covered structurally but may be covered under a separate hydraulic component clause.

What matters is that the coverage is stronger and clearer on the two brands we push heavily than on any import brand we have sold. That is not a marketing claim; it is our claim workflow experience. Import brand warranty claims often involve overseas parts sourcing and multi-week lead times. Rotary and Challenger claims we can typically resolve in under two weeks door-to-door. For a European specialty shop that cannot afford weeks of downtime, that responsiveness matters more than the warranty length on paper.

Myth 4: ALI certification is optional for warranty

This one costs shops real money. A vehicle storage lift install must be ALI-certified for the manufacturer warranty to remain valid. That is spelled out in every warranty document we have ever read from Rotary and Challenger. If you buy a lift from a broker who does not do certified install, or if you self-install without ALI certification, your warranty coverage is at best partial and at worst voided entirely. Insurance carriers also look at ALI certification when a lift-related incident occurs.

We ALI-certify every commercial vehicle storage lift we install in the Des Moines metro. The certification paperwork stays with the lift and follows any future ownership if the shop changes hands. When you eventually sell the shop or the lift, the ALI certification adds resale value because the next owner’s warranty and insurance situation stays intact. Skipping certification to save $200 or $400 at install almost always costs more in the first year of ownership.

Myth 5: You cannot swap rotors with the car raised in storage position

Some shops assume that once a car is in storage position (fully raised, other car parked below), no service work can happen on it. Actually the opposite is true. A vehicle storage lift with the mechanical locks engaged is a perfectly stable working platform. If the top car needs a rotor swap while the bottom car sits in the bay, you can do the work with the bridge jack tray sliding under the raised runway. The bottom car may need to move out for jack tray access, depending on lift model.

On most Rotary and Challenger four-post storage lifts we sell to Des Moines shops, the jack tray slides on rails between the two runways and reaches every axle position on any wheelbase. It works whether the lift is at full height or at working height. That flexibility is why we recommend the tray as a non-optional accessory for any European specialty shop, even one that plans to use the lift primarily for storage. The tray transforms the lift from a parking rack into a service tool.

Myth 6: Filing a warranty claim requires the original installer

Buyers sometimes think if the original installer goes out of business, the warranty is lost. Not true. The manufacturer honors warranty claims regardless of which certified installer originally set the lift, as long as the ALI certification was in place at install and any subsequent service was performed to standard. Claims are filed directly with the manufacturer or through any authorized dealer, including us. We have processed claims for lifts we did not originally install, and the paperwork works the same.

When you file a claim on any vehicle storage lift, we need three things: the serial number, a description of the symptom with photos, and the original ALI paperwork if you have it. If you do not have the paperwork we can often reconstruct it from manufacturer records, but that adds a week or two. Keep the paperwork in a labeled folder in the shop office. It is worth more than most shop owners think until they need it and cannot find it.

Bottom line for Des Moines European specialty shops

A four-post vehicle storage lift with a proper jack tray handles most of the brake and service work a European specialty shop does day-to-day, plus it doubles the effective bay count by stacking vehicles. Skip the tray and you lose most of the service capability. Skip ALI certification and you lose most of the warranty coverage. Buy from Rotary or Challenger and you get the warranty responsiveness you need to keep production moving. Those are the three decisions that matter.
