Freight logistics on a vehicle storage lift shipped to the Iowa-Nebraska border sound trivial until they go wrong. An overlanding builder in Glenwood who ordered a four-post from us last fall wanted the lift specifically for brake service and rotor swaps on his built Land Cruiser and his wife’s daily Subaru. What made the job worth writing up was the freight and unloading choreography that got the crates from our Ames warehouse to his rural driveway, plus the install day itself. The lessons apply to any rural buyer more than 90 minutes from Ames, which is why we are sharing them.

The customer and the setup
The customer was building a 30×50 pole barn on a rural parcel about 15 minutes east of Glenwood. Ceiling was 14 feet at the side wall with bar joists to the peak. Slab was a fresh 6-inch pour at 4,000 psi. Electrical was a 200-amp panel fed from the yard pole with room to spare. Vehicle inventory was a lifted 80-series Land Cruiser and a Subaru Outback for the wife, both of which needed regular brake service that he wanted to do himself rather than paying a shop. A vehicle storage lift was the obvious tool.
He picked a 9,000 lb four-post with the sliding jack tray, an aluminum drip tray set, and a caster kit. Total shipping weight was just under 1,100 pounds split across two crates. The Land Cruiser weighs about 5,200 pounds curb; the Outback is under 3,800. Both were well inside the 9,000 lb rating with margin. What made the job tricky was not the lift spec; it was the delivery route and the unloading equipment available on the day.
Freight route from Ames to the border
Our standard freight for a vehicle storage lift is a common carrier LTL truck out of Ames headed for the destination terminal, then a local delivery from that terminal to the customer’s address. For a Glenwood address the terminal is Omaha, which means the trailer crosses the Missouri River bridge at Council Bluffs and comes back over to deliver. Transit time from our warehouse to his driveway was three business days. That is typical for anything within a 200-mile radius.
The critical decision on freight is liftgate versus flatbed. On a home shop with no forklift or tractor, liftgate is required. Liftgate service adds $150 to $300 to the freight bill, and it means the driver can lower the crate to the ground rather than dropping it. If the customer has a tractor with pallet forks, a skid steer, or a farm forklift, we can skip liftgate and save that fee. For this customer, we skipped it because he owned a Kubota with pallet forks. That was the right call for his site.
Unloading day: what actually happened
Delivery arrived at 10 a.m. on a Wednesday. The trailer backed down the customer’s gravel driveway, which was firm enough for the LTL truck but marginal in wet weather. He met the driver with the Kubota running. Two crates came off in about 20 minutes. The heavier crate held the columns and crossbeams; the lighter crate held the runways, hydraulics, and accessories. Both went onto the shop floor via the Kubota. No damage in transit; no repackaging issues.
The one snag was that the driver did not want to drive to the back of the shop. He wanted to drop at the road. That is common with LTL drivers on rural routes. The customer’s workaround was to bring the tractor to the road and shuttle the crates back to the shop himself, which took another 25 minutes. If you are ordering a vehicle storage lift to a rural address, plan for this. Ask the driver at scheduling time whether they will make a final-driveway approach, and if not, have a plan for the shuttle.
Forklift logistics if you don’t own equipment
Customers without a tractor or forklift on-site have three options. Option one is liftgate delivery, which handles the truck-to-ground drop but leaves you with a 600 to 800-pound crate sitting in the driveway. That is workable if the shop floor is level with the driveway and you have four strong friends and a pallet jack. Option two is renting a local forklift for the day, which runs $200 to $350 in most rural Iowa markets. Option three is bringing our install team with a forklift, which we can do within a two-hour radius of Ames.
For the Glenwood job we were slightly outside the two-hour radius, so we did not send our forklift. If you are on the western Iowa or eastern Nebraska side of that radius, ask about our install package options. Sometimes it makes sense to pay a bit more for us to handle everything; sometimes it makes sense to rent locally and have us come only for install. Install day and commissioning
We drove down two techs on a Thursday morning to install. Time on site was seven hours. Column assembly, anchor drilling, crossbeam pinning, cable routing, hydraulic hookup, and fill-and-bleed took the bulk of the day. We cycled the vehicle storage lift up and down eight times with progressive load, ending with the Land Cruiser on top for a proof run. All four mechanical safety locks engaged and released cleanly. The customer paid the install invoice on the spot and had brake service done on the Subaru the next morning.
Post-install checklist included fluid level check at the reservoir, cable tension audit, and safety lock cycle test. We walked the customer through each item so he can perform monthly self-checks. We also filed the ALI installation certification and mailed him the paperwork copy. That certification is what keeps the manufacturer warranty valid for the full coverage period. Losing the paperwork is a hassle later, so we always mail a copy and keep one on file at our Ames office.
Brake service configuration on the finished lift
The reason the customer bought a vehicle storage lift with a jack tray was brake service, and the tray earned its keep in the first week. Full brake service on a four-post requires unloading the wheel from the runway using the bridge jack, then pulling the caliper, rotor, and pads normally. The customer did front pads on the Subaru first, then front rotors and pads on the Cruiser, and rear rotors two weekends later. Total time per corner was under 40 minutes with the truck lifted, which is faster than he could do the same job on jack stands.
Rotor swaps on the lifted Cruiser were where the four-post really paid off. The truck sits high enough on 35s that jack stands are marginal for wheels-off work. On the lift with the jack tray, the truck was rock-solid at working height. He has now done both front rotors and a rear rotor, plus a caliper pin lube on all four corners. His conclusion after six months of ownership: the jack tray option was worth every dollar and he would spec it again on any future vehicle storage lift.
Lessons for another border-region buyer
The takeaways from this install apply to any rural buyer on the western Iowa or eastern Nebraska side of our service radius. Confirm liftgate versus tractor unload before freight ships. Ask the LTL driver whether they will approach the shop directly or drop at the road. Have a pallet jack on hand even if you have a tractor. Book install labor at least a week after freight arrival to allow for LTL transit variability. Buy the jack tray. File the ALI paperwork. Do not lose the warranty registration.
