Vehicle storage lifts show up in southern Minnesota body shops for a very specific reason: the winters are long, the shop floor fills up with wrecks waiting on parts, and the owner wants a way to double the useful footprint without pouring another slab. We field this call twice a month from foremen in Albert Lea, Austin, Owatonna, and Rochester who all ask the same question in slightly different words — do we go overhead or baseplate for a storage-plus-work configuration? The honest answer depends on ceiling, budget, daily workflow, and how much of the shop is dedicated to bodywork versus mechanical. This guide walks the trade-offs like a foreman would.

The southern Minnesota body-shop use case

The shops calling us from I-35 corridor towns are almost always dealing with the same layout: a rectangular building with 20 to 30 ft of open bay, insulated ceilings in the 12 to 14 ft range, and a two- or three-tech crew that rotates paint and mechanical work through the same slab. Vehicle storage lifts on that floor plan serve two masters. During the day, a stored vehicle is a car waiting on a fender or a hood that is out for paint. Overnight and on weekends, the same lift holds the tech’s personal project or a customer loaner.

That dual role changes the equation from a pure home-storage buyer. A body-shop foreman needs vehicle storage lifts that raise and lower fast, hold their park height for weeks at a time under a full-vehicle load, and put no columns or plates in the way of a paint pull or a frame rack. Which is why the overhead-versus-baseplate question matters. In a home garage it is mostly aesthetics. In a working shop it is workflow.

Overhead configuration: the pros and cons

An overhead 2-post lift runs a crossbar between the two columns at the top, which houses the equalizer cables and the shutoff bar. The advantage is a completely clear floor. Nothing runs across the concrete between the columns, so a body-shop foreman can walk a frame rack under the lifted car, roll a paint booth cart across the bay, or slide a floor jack up to the pinch weld without stepping over anything. For general daily maintenance work — brakes, exhaust, oil, alignment prep — the overhead layout is what every OEM service bay uses.

The catch is ceiling height. An overhead lift takes about 12 ft of clear ceiling at the crossbar to give a decent lift stroke on a full-size vehicle. Southern Minnesota body shops with 12 ft ceilings need to lift a truncated stroke or run a low-profile overhead variant. Where the overhead configuration hurts is when it is combined with vehicle storage lifts as the second unit — the crossbar cuts into the airspace above the storage lift and can force you into a shorter storage model than the ceiling would otherwise allow. Foremen with 13 to 14 ft insulated ceilings almost always land here.

Baseplate configuration: when it wins

A baseplate 2-post runs the cables and hoses across the floor between the columns inside a low steel channel roughly two inches tall. The upside is enormous: you can install a baseplate lift in a shop with only 10 or 11 ft of ceiling and still get a full stroke. For shops that share their bay with vehicle storage lifts overhead, baseplate is often the only way to fit both under a low insulated ceiling. Rotary and Challenger both build baseplate 2-post models we ship into Minnesota body shops all winter.

The downside of a baseplate is the trip hazard and the workflow interruption of the plate itself. A foreman rolling an engine hoist has to lift over the plate. A tech walking with a full parts tote has to watch his feet. In a body shop where paint carts and frame equipment cross the bay dozens of times a day, that is a real cost. For pure mechanical maintenance shops it does not matter. For paint-and-body shops it matters a lot. We help foremen weigh this by asking how many wheeled tools cross the lift bay per shift.

Ceiling math: what your building actually gives you

Before we quote vehicle storage lifts alongside a 2-post, we run the ceiling math in writing. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — a truss chord, a duct, a light fixture, anything a lifted vehicle could hit. Subtract the tallest vehicle you will ever store on the lift, plus 6 inches of clearance for the safety locks to engage. What remains is your usable park height for the storage lift. Then measure the same ceiling for the 2-post: overhead needs the ceiling minus about 12 ft for the crossbar clearance.

The number we see busted the most in southern Minnesota shops is duct clearance. HVAC ducts routinely eat 18 to 24 inches off the useable ceiling in older insulated buildings. If your gross ceiling is 14 ft but a duct crosses the middle of the bay at 12 ft 2 in, that duct is your ceiling. Vehicle storage lifts will not clear it, and neither will a stroked-out overhead 2-post. We walk this in person before we ship because the number one warranty return we see is a mis-sized lift that ran into a duct.

Which brands we recommend for a body-shop storage setup

For 4-post vehicle storage lifts, we point body shops at the Rotary and BendPak home-storage families. Both build a proven 9,000 lb four-post with adjustable park heights, cable-driven columns, and a documented U.S. parts pipeline. Rotary’s storage lift is our default recommendation for the shop that also carries Rotary or Challenger 2-post equipment because the service technician learning curve is one brand instead of two. BendPak is the pick when a foreman wants the caster kit option to roll the storage lift between bays.

For the 2-post half of the pairing, we recommend Rotary or Challenger. Both companies build overhead and baseplate variants in the 10K, 12K, and 15K classes, so a foreman can match the layout to the ceiling without changing brand. We do not sell BendPak 2-post lifts alongside their storage lifts because we have found the parts chain runs cleaner keeping the two categories separate. The point is that vehicle storage lifts and daily-service lifts should be spec’d as a system, not one at a time.

Install, freight, and the Minnesota winter question

Southern Minnesota is a five-hour truck run from our Ames warehouse, so freight into Albert Lea or Rochester runs the same rate as freight into Des Moines. The install crew we send is the same crew that installs in Iowa — same anchors, same torque specs, same paperwork. What is different is the season. We do not install vehicle storage lifts in an unheated Minnesota shop between December and March because concrete anchor cure times get unreliable below 40 degrees. If your building has heat, we install year-round. If not, we schedule between April and November.

The freight typically hits in two pallets — columns and crossmembers on one, deck plates and accessories on the other. A body-shop foreman needs 24 hours of forklift access on the delivery day and a clear bay for the install crew the following morning. We install a home-class storage lift in about six hours with a two-man crew, including anchor drilling, plumb-and-square, and a full functional test with a stored vehicle at park height. The whole workflow from purchase to first car parked overhead runs about three weeks.
