Why Bay Layout Matters More Than The 2 Post Car Lift Model

For a first-time home buyer, the question that gets the most attention online is which brand and which model — Rotary versus BendPak versus Atlas. In practice, the wrong lift installed in the wrong layout is worse than a cheap lift installed in the right layout. Bay layout drives everything on a 2 post car lift install: which arm configuration works, whether the tech has room to walk around the car, whether the hood clears the ceiling with the lift raised, and whether the garage door still opens with a car up on the arms. Getting those details right beats every brand debate.

In an Ankeny three-car garage, the typical bay is 20 to 22 feet deep and 12 to 14 feet wide. That’s tight but workable for a residential-duty 2 post car lift. What matters is column placement — the columns need to sit 10 to 12 feet apart on center, with at least three feet of clearance behind them for the working end of the car. With a car on the lift, the door can usually still cycle open and closed, though we recommend not doing so with anyone in the bay.

In an Ankeny two-car garage where the bay depth is 20 feet, the layout ends up with the front column at 8 feet from the door, rear column at 18 feet, and two feet of column-to-wall behind the rear column. That works for cars up to a full-size sedan or a mid-size SUV. Long-wheelbase pickups need a deeper bay — 22 to 24 feet — or the front of the truck sticks out the door with the tail up on the lift. Measure the ceiling from concrete to the lowest overhead obstruction — joist, truss, opener rail, or light — with a tape measure, twice. Measure the bay depth from door to back wall. Measure the bay width column-to-column. Confirm the door track will clear the lift when raised. Confirm the electrical service has a spare 30-amp single-phase circuit available, or budget for adding one.

Check the concrete slab documentation — homebuilder specs if you have them, or a core sample if you don’t. Confirm the outer edges of the column footprint have at least four inches of clear concrete around them for anchor bite.
