Running a car restoration shop in the Des Moines metro means you juggle three problems most modern shops never touch: unusual weight distributions on partially stripped bodies, long dwell times with a car in the air, and mystery voltage in the buildings we usually work in (converted machine shops, old body shops, half-finished pole barns). This decision tree walks you through the exact sequence we use to spec a 2 post car lift for restoration work, starting from your budget and ending at breaker size. Step 1: Set your true budget, not your fantasy budget

The first decision on a restoration shop 2 post car lift is not brand or capacity. It is honest budget. We see three tiers of restoration shops in the Des Moines metro. Tier one is $3,500 to $5,000 all-in, which means a mid-market lift like an Atlas or an entry Rotary with self-install. Tier two is $5,500 to $8,500, which is a name-brand ALI Gold lift like a Rotary SPO10 or Challenger CL10V3 with professional install. Tier three is $9,000-plus, which means a heavier 12K or 15K lift, versa-symmetric arms and a full electrical package.

Pick your tier honestly, then never look at the tier below it again. What kills shops is comparing a tier-two lift to a tier-one price and feeling ripped off. The tier below yours is a different product. Restoration shops especially benefit from paying up for build quality because you leave cars in the air for weeks at a time and cable stretch, cylinder seep and pad rot become real problems in year three.

Step 2: Match capacity to the heaviest fully-built restoration you touch

A stripped 1965 Mustang shell is 2,300 pounds. A finished, dressed 1967 Camaro with big block, TKX and full interior is closer to 3,900 pounds. A finished K5 Blazer restomod with a Coyote and a full cage can hit 5,800. A restored 1948 Chevrolet flatbed cab-and-chassis with a 6.2 Duramax swap is 7,200. Whatever your heaviest finished project ever weighs, add 20 percent for a fluid-loaded post-drivetrain-swap weigh-in. That is the capacity floor for your 2 post car lift.

For most Des Moines metro restoration shops we service, the answer is a 10,000 pound lift. Occasionally a truck-heavy shop needs a 12,000. Almost no one restoring passenger cars needs 15,000, so if a salesman is pushing you there, ask why. The lift capacity you buy is the lift capacity you own for fifteen years, so buy for peak reality, not peak fear.

Step 3: Ceiling height dictates overhead vs baseplate

Overhead 2 post car lift models have a top beam that connects the columns above the vehicle. Baseplate models have a floor plate connecting the columns below the vehicle. Overhead is stiffer, cheaper to service and blocks nothing that matters in a restoration shop. Baseplate is the fallback when your ceiling won’t clear an overhead lift plus the car at full extension.

Rule of thumb for restoration: overhead needs 12 feet of clear ceiling, baseplate needs 10 feet. If you have exposed trusses, measure to the bottom of the truss chord, not the roof deck. If your shop is a converted pole barn with a purlin at 11 feet 4 inches, you are getting a baseplate. Do not fight this. A baseplate lift is not a lesser lift, it is a different lift, and both are ALI Gold certified when installed correctly.

Step 4: Electrical service and phase — the Des Moines metro reality

Most residential-zoned and lightly-commercial buildings in the Des Moines metro are single-phase 240 volt. Most heavy-commercial buildings are three-phase 208 volt. A restoration shop can be either, depending on whether you inherited a converted retail bay or a former industrial building. Before you buy any 2 post car lift, open your panel and look. Count the bus bars. A single-phase panel has two bus bars. A three-phase panel has three.

If you are single-phase, order a single-phase lift with a 30 amp two-pole breaker on 10 AWG copper. If you are three-phase, order a three-phase lift with a 20 amp three-pole breaker on 12 AWG copper. The phase choice does not affect your buying decision otherwise. Both configurations lift the same weight, at similar speeds. The mistake is ordering the wrong phase and needing a rotary phase converter later, which adds $600 to $1,200 to your job.

Step 5: Arm geometry for long-dwell restoration cars

Restoration cars sit in the air for hours, sometimes weeks. Arm geometry matters differently for you than for a general-service shop. What you want is arm restraint that stays engaged over long dwells, spotting pads that don’t crush the pinch-weld, and enough arm reach to spot a variety of wheelbases from a Bugeye Sprite to a first-gen K5. Versa-symmetric arms handle both extremes better than pure symmetric or pure asymmetric.

For long-dwell work, we also recommend jack stands under the frame rails as belt-and-suspenders. A 2 post car lift is safe for the intended service, but no lift manufacturer intended you to leave a car up for two weeks. Drop stands. It costs nothing, protects the cables from constant tension load, and gives you peace of mind. Any restoration shop that leaves cars in the air for extended periods should own six good jack stands rated 6 tons each.

Step 6: Concrete slab depth and anchor rating

Every 2 post car lift specifies a minimum concrete depth and rating. The standard is 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete for a 10,000 pound lift, and 4.25 to 4.5 inches for a 12,000 pound. Some Des Moines metro restoration shops are in old buildings where the slab is 3.5 inches of low-quality concrete. That is a real problem. Do not just anchor down and hope. We drill a core sample if we are unsure, and if the slab is thin we pour a slab overlay or a footing pad.

A footing pad is a 4×4 foot section of 6 inch reinforced concrete poured under each column. It runs about $700 to $1,200 per column installed. It is the correct answer for a thin slab. What is not the correct answer is longer anchors into thin concrete. That will fail on the first heavy lift, and it will fail sideways with a car in the air. Do not do this.

Step 7: Install crew and permit — the last decision

The final decision on your 2 post car lift is who installs it. Options are: you do it yourself with a helper and a forklift, we ship and you contract a local lift installer, or we deliver and install turnkey. For a restoration shop in the Des Moines metro, our recommendation is turnkey. The install crew pulls the electrical permit, sets the columns plumb, anchors to torque spec, calibrates the arm restraints and cables, tests to full capacity and hands you a signed inspection.

DIY install saves roughly $800 to $1,400 but voids the labor portion of the warranty on some brands. Turnkey install includes a warranty transfer of both parts and labor and gives you a paper trail your business insurance will want to see if a claim ever happens.
