That is the frame every 2 post car lift decision has to fit into. Column spacing has to allow tech access on both sides of the car with the arms extended, the door has to open into free space, and the arm swing has to clear neighboring bay work zones. What Symmetric Really Means
A symmetric 2 post car lift has both columns facing each other flat, with the pickup point of the vehicle centered exactly between the two columns. The car sits with equal weight on the front and rear arms, and the arms all reach the same distance out from the column base. The column geometry is simple, the load is balanced, and the arm swing is identical on all four positions. Symmetric is the classic layout — the Challenger E10 and E12 are symmetric designs, along with a big share of the Rotary SPO commercial line.
Where symmetric geometry pays off is on rear-heavy vehicles like extended-cab pickups and cargo vans, and on any car where the tech wants equal reach on all four arms without having to remember which arm is short and which is long. It is also the geometry that produces the cleanest walkable access down the sides of the car — the columns are flat-facing, not rotated, so there is no diagonal pinch point at the column corner. For a dealership doing high volume general maintenance across a mixed fleet, symmetric is the safer default. The tradeoff shows up on driver door swing, which we address in the asymmetric section below.
What Asymmetric Really Means
An asymmetric 2 post car lift rotates each column by roughly 30 degrees so the arms on the driver side are shorter and the arms on the passenger side are longer. The car sits with the cabin biased toward the columns and the engine and trunk overhanging the arms in front and behind. The purpose of the rotation is one specific thing: it gives the driver door and passenger door clearance to swing open past the column. On a symmetric lift, opening a driver door once the car is on the arms means hitting the column with the door edge. On an asymmetric lift, the door swings clear.
That single feature — door swing clearance — is why asymmetric configurations became the default in high-volume shops. A tech pulling in and out of the car frequently is grateful for the clearance. The tradeoff is that arm reach is not identical on all four positions, and the arm geometry is designed around a specific vehicle balance point — meaning if you park the car too far forward or too far back, one of the arms will not reach the pickup properly. Rotary SPOA-series lifts are asymmetric by design. For a dealership doing showroom pre-delivery inspection and lot-vehicle work where techs are in and out of driver seats constantly, asymmetric is often the better fit.
The 30-Degree Column Angle Explained
The 30-degree rotation on an asymmetric 2 post car lift is not arbitrary — it comes from the geometry of a typical passenger car cabin. On most sedans and small SUVs, the driver seat is roughly 30 inches inboard from the outside of the vehicle, and the driver door swings about 40 degrees before it hits obstacles. A 30-degree column rotation places the column post at an angle that lets a 40-degree door swing clear the front edge of the column without contact. That is the design math and it is why 30 degrees is the standard across manufacturers for asymmetric configurations.
What it means practically is that on an asymmetric lift the driver-side arms are shorter than the passenger-side arms by about six to eight inches at full extension. Rotary SPOA10 spec: driver side arms extend to approximately 55 inches, passenger side arms extend to approximately 63 inches. That difference is on purpose — it moves the pickup points along the frame rails so the car sits properly balanced with the cabin closer to the columns. If a tech tries to position a car centered like they would on a symmetric lift, the asymmetric arms will not reach the pickups. The car has to be pulled forward until the driver door lines up with the column post, and then the pickups fall exactly where the arms need them.

Pad height at fully-lowered position determines the shortest ground clearance the lift can pick up. A 3.75-inch fully-lowered pad clears most passenger cars easily — a stock sedan sits with the frame pickup point around 5 to 6 inches off the ground, and there is a full inch and a half of margin. Where the pad height becomes a problem is on lowered vehicles, particularly aftermarket-suspension performance cars where the pickup point may be 4.5 inches off the ground. For those, the drop-end arm option lowers the pad closer to 3 inches and clears the low-slung frame.
Arm reach determines the wheelbase range that fits. On a Rotary SPOA10, the combined arm reach lets the lift pick up vehicles with wheelbases from about 90 inches (a Smart car or Miata) up to 155 inches (a full-size SUV or long-bed pickup). Beyond 155-inch wheelbase — cargo vans, extended-cab dually pickups — the SPO12 or SPO15 with longer arms is the right pick. Getting the wheelbase math right at quote time is what turns a $5,000 lift into the correct $5,000 lift versus the almost-right lift that struggles with 20 percent of the dealership’s inventory.
