Starting point: van, driveway, and a ceiling to grow into
The mechanic in this case study had been running a mobile business out of a full-size van for four years. He had a good book of independent customers scattered across Urbandale, Clive, and Waukee, and the ceiling on van-only revenue was starting to show. By 2 PM Wednesday the 2 post car lift was fully commissioned, hydraulic bled, safety latches engaging on all four positions, and a first vehicle test cycle complete. Total elapsed install time was under a day and a half of actual work plus half a day of setup and verification.
First job: differential fluid on an Audi Q5
The first paying job on the new lift was a differential fluid service on an Audi Q5 that had come in from a regular customer. On the van in the field this job had been a two-hour marginal-profit affair. On the two-post it was a 40-minute clean job. Arm placement at the factory jack points, pad extensions to clear the sill covers, arm restraints engaged, lift raised to working height, drain plug and fill plug both accessible from a standing position.
He said afterward the difference in how the job felt was worth the lift on its own. Instead of crouching under a jacked vehicle with a pump extension, he stood upright, saw the whole underbody, and finished the job in half the time. The productivity multiplier on differential fluid, brake work, and undercarriage inspection is the single biggest change a mobile mechanic feels the week after installing a 2 post car lift.
The mobile-plus-fixed hybrid model
He did not close the mobile business. He kept the van for on-site work: pre-purchase inspections at dealerships, mobile brake repairs at office parks, and roadside light work. The fixed bay took differential, transmission, drivetrain, and any job requiring undercarriage time. Within three months the fixed bay accounted for about 60 percent of gross revenue at higher per-hour rate than mobile.
The hybrid model works because the mobile van keeps him embedded with commercial customers who value the on-site convenience for quick jobs, while the fixed bay captures the higher-margin work. Ongoing maintenance and what breaks first
Six months in the only maintenance he had done was a quarterly greasing of the sheaves and a monthly visual inspection. Cables were unchanged, hydraulic level unchanged, no leaks, no latch engagement issues. This is normal. On a lightly-worked commercial 2 post car lift the first thing to see wear is usually the arm restraint teeth if the mechanic swings arms hard, or the safety latches if he cycles the lift many times a day.
Neither had shown wear yet, but we have him on a calendar for a paid annual inspection. That inspection catches early wear and documents the lift’s history for insurance and for eventual resale. The mobile mechanic’s biggest resale factor is a documented maintenance history. Buy the lift, use the lift, and log the maintenance. Everything else takes care of itself.
What we would do differently
Two things. First, we would have installed a permanent air line to the driver-side column base on day one instead of running a hose from the compressor. Cost was $200 in copper and a couple hours. Second, we would have added a small hose reel above the crossbeam. Both are small quality-of-life fixes that would have shaved a few minutes off every job. Not enough to change the buy decision, but worth putting on your list if you are planning a similar setup.
