An EV specialty shop owner in Dubuque called us in early summer — the shop had grown from a two-bay operation into a five-bay operation over about three years, mostly on Tesla, Ford Lightning, and Rivian work, and the owner was ready to add his first heavy-duty in-house 2 post car lift. What surprised us in the conversation was how much bad information he had already collected online about installation prep. Site survey requirements, permit steps, electrical rough-in — every source had told him something different, and most of it was wrong or half-right in a way that would cost him weeks. This piece is the myth-busting version of that conversation, focused on what a Dubuque EV shop actually needs to prepare before the install crew rolls up.

Myth: “EVs need a special 2 post car lift design”

False. Every major manufacturer of light-duty EVs — Tesla, Ford, GM, Rivian, Lucid, Polestar — designs their vehicles for standard four-corner lift points that are compatible with any properly-configured commercial 2 post car lift. You do not need an EV-specific lift. What you do need is a lift with the right capacity for the specific EV weight class and the right pad configuration to reach the manufacturer-designated lift points without contacting the battery pack. Those are two different problems, and both are solvable with a standard commercial lift catalog. There is no “EV lift” category in the ALI certification system, and any seller telling you otherwise is selling a marketing category.

Where the myth comes from is that some EVs — particularly Rivians and Ford F-150 Lightnings — have lift points that are slightly further inboard than their ICE counterparts, closer to the battery pack floor. The lift arms have to reach further under the vehicle. Every three-stage-arm commercial lift on our catalog can do this without modification. What you may need is a low-pad option for vehicles with a lot of underbody cladding that has to be reached over — the drop-end telescoping pad geometry on Rotary and Challenger commercial lifts handles this natively. Do not let a sales rep sell you a “premium EV lift” for a two-thousand-dollar upcharge. That product does not really exist. A properly-spec’d standard commercial lift handles every EV in the current U.S. market cleanly.

Myth: “You need a permit before we can even quote you”

Also false. We can and do quote lifts before you have any permits in hand. The quote is on the equipment, the installation labor, and the shipping — none of which requires local building permits. Permits, when they apply, come into play at the point of actual installation, and typically only for the concrete work if any is needed. In most Iowa jurisdictions, installing a 2 post car lift on an existing commercial garage slab does not require a separate building permit at all. Electrical work — running 230-volt three-phase power to the lift’s control box — may require a permit depending on the jurisdiction, but that is a separate permit from the lift install itself.

For Dubuque specifically, the shop permits typically fall into two categories. If you are running new electrical service, an electrical permit is required from the city. If you are just tapping an existing panel with adequate capacity, a permit is usually not needed but the work still has to meet current NEC code. The lift installation itself — anchor drilling, column raising, hydraulic hook-up — does not trigger a permit under Dubuque’s current commercial code. Our installers handle the anchor work; a licensed local electrician handles the electrical hookup. Neither requires a hold-your-quote-for-permits step in the process. Get the quote, get approved for financing, and start the electrical and concrete verification work in parallel. That is the actual timeline, not the permit-first myth the internet keeps repeating.

Myth: “Site survey is optional — just measure and order”

False, and dangerously so. The site survey is not optional if you want the install to go smoothly. Every shop we quote gets a pre-install site survey either in person or via a detailed measurement-and-photo checklist we walk through by video call. The survey covers ceiling height at the lift location, ceiling height clearance under any obstructions like HVAC ducts or overhead doors, floor slope and flatness, existing concrete thickness at the anchor locations, and clearance to walls or other equipment. Miss any one of those and the install crew arrives to a surprise. Surprises during a scheduled install are expensive because the crew is on the clock and the crane is scheduled for that specific window.

The most common surprise we see in Dubuque and other older-building shops is a header beam or an HVAC duct running unexpectedly close to the ceiling of the lift bay. The 2 post car lift’s overhead safety bar requires a specific clearance above the columns, and that clearance sometimes conflicts with structural elements the shop owner has not thought about. The survey catches that before the lift is ordered. If it turns out the ceiling geometry does not work for an overhead lift, we switch the order to a baseplate configuration with a matching capacity. If we had not caught it in the survey, we would have shipped the wrong lift and had to reorder — a two-week delay minimum. So no, do not skip the survey. The lift order depends on it.

Myth: “EV battery weight breaks a standard 10K lift”

False, with a caveat. A Tesla Model Y AWD long-range weighs about 4,400 pounds curb. A Ford Lightning Lariat extended-range weighs about 6,900 pounds. A Rivian R1T with the max-pack battery weighs about 7,150. A GMC Hummer EV — the extreme case — weighs about 9,600 pounds curb. Even the Hummer is under the 10,000-pound rating of a standard commercial 10K lift. The 10K lift handles every current-production EV in the U.S. market with margin. The myth that EV weight breaks a standard lift is not based on physics; it is based on the fact that Hummer weights make good headlines.

The caveat is capacity margin. Any lift should be operated at a safe margin below its rated capacity, and lifting a 9,600-pound Hummer on a 10,000-pound lift is running right at the ceiling. For a Dubuque EV shop that is going to service Hummers regularly, our recommendation is to step up to a 12,000-pound-class lift for margin. For a shop that will occasionally see a Hummer but mostly runs Tesla and Ford Lightning work, the standard 10K is genuinely fine. The 2 post car lift catalog at the 10K and 12K tiers overlaps significantly, and the price delta between them is small enough that many EV shops just default to the 12K for future-proofing. That is a reasonable choice. Just do not let anyone convince you that a 10K is inadequate for a Model Y. It is not, and the physics agree.

Myth: “Electrical rough-in has to be done before the lift arrives”

Mostly false. The electrical hookup for a 2 post car lift is done at the very end of the install process, after the columns are set and plumbed and the hydraulic lines are connected. What has to be true before install day is that the electrical service is available in the building and there is a plan for where the control box will be mounted. The actual wiring from the panel to the control box can be done in parallel with the lift install or even after, as long as it is complete before first use. This flexibility saves shops significant time and money and shortens the overall project.

For a Dubuque EV shop, the typical electrical spec is a 230-volt single-phase or three-phase feed rated at 30 amps to the lift’s control box. If your panel already has capacity, adding the lift circuit is a couple of hours of licensed electrician time. If the panel is full or the service is undersized, that becomes a bigger project and needs to be handled before the lift can be operated. So the honest sequence is: verify panel capacity during the site survey, book the electrician in parallel with the install schedule, and have the electrical work complete by lift-startup day. That works. What does not work is the myth version — waiting three weeks for a rough-in before you can even schedule the lift install. Do them in parallel. It shaves a week or more off the total project timeline for a Dubuque shop.

Myth: “State inspection is different for EV shops”

False. Iowa’s commercial lift-inspection requirements are the same whether the shop services ICE vehicles, EVs, or a mix. The inspector is checking the lift — cables, latches, hydraulics, anchor condition, structural integrity — not the vehicles the lift services. An ALI-certified 2 post car lift passes inspection in a Dubuque EV shop under exactly the same criteria it would pass in an oil-change shop or a body shop. This is one of those myths that shops occasionally repeat because someone at a networking event once mentioned “EV inspection” — but they were talking about the vehicle inspection, not the shop equipment inspection.

What is true is that EV shops sometimes get more scrutiny during general shop inspections because of the electrical infrastructure — high-voltage battery packs, DC fast-charging equipment, and so on. That is a fire-marshal and electrical-inspector concern, not a lift-inspector concern. Keep the two separate mentally. Your lift needs a clean annual inspection log. Your electrical service needs its own inspection. Neither one is EV-specific. Book the lift inspection through our service group or through any licensed regional inspector, and the certification is renewed for another year. Getting the actual install right in a Dubuque EV bay

Putting all of the above together, here is what a real Dubuque EV shop install looks like from start to finish. Week one: initial call, site survey, financing application. Week two: lift ordered, electrical scope confirmed with local electrician, concrete verified. Week three: lift ships from OEM warehouse. Week four: install crew arrives, sets anchors, plumbs columns, runs hydraulics, tests safety systems, hands off to the shop for electrical hookup. Week five: electrician completes final wiring, control box energized, break-in cycle logged, first EV service work performed on the new lift. That is a five-week cycle for a clean project.

What can compress that cycle is running the electrical and concrete verification steps in parallel with the lift order and shipping. What can expand it is any surprise from the site survey — a header conflict, a thin slab, a panel-capacity issue. The site survey is the leverage point on the whole project timeline. Do it right, do it early, and the rest of the cycle runs smoothly.
