The columns are 10 to 11 feet tall, each column weighs roughly 550 to 700 pounds, and the overhead cross bar (if you spec that configuration) runs 12 to 13 feet high fully assembled. In a hobby garage with a 10-foot ceiling, none of that fits. In a hobby garage with an 11-foot ceiling, only baseplate configurations fit and only some vehicles will reach full lift. In a hobby garage with a 12-foot ceiling or better, most home-tier lifts fit fine.
The Dubuque hobbyist we’re describing had a garage he’d built ten years earlier with a 12-foot 4-inch ceiling — high for the neighborhood but standard for a hobby build. That’s enough for a BendPak XPR-10AS or an Atlas 10K asymmetric in baseplate configuration, and marginal for the same equipment in overhead configuration. His Chevelle is 55 inches tall, well under the ceiling constraint. His wife’s SUV at 66 inches tall was closer to the limit but still comfortable. Every home-garage buyer should measure the ceiling at the lowest point (usually a beam or truss chord) and subtract 12 inches from that for shut-off clearance before shopping for a lift. That single measurement eliminates half the models on the market for most hobby builds.
Dubuque garages — what we typically see for ceilings
Dubuque home garages tend to fall into three ceiling ranges, based on the era and style of construction. Older Dubuque homes — pre-1980 detached garages — usually run 8 to 9 feet at the joist, which is not enough ceiling for any 2 post car lift installation. Rotary and Challenger commercial-grade equipment call for 4 inches of 3,000 PSI minimum on the 10K tier and 6 inches on the 12K tier. Any slab that meets or exceeds those specs is safe to anchor into with the manufacturer’s included wedge anchor kit.
Home-garage slabs in Dubuque and eastern Iowa are typically poured to code, which is usually 4 inches of 3,000 PSI residential-grade concrete. That’s right at the manufacturer’s minimum for a 10,000-pound-tier lift, and there’s no margin for corner cases like a slab crack under the anchor point or a rebar hit that requires re-drilling nearby. The Dubuque hobbyist had a copy of his construction receipt from 2015 showing a 5-inch slab poured at 4,000 PSI, which is comfortable margin. If a hobby buyer doesn’t have paperwork on the slab, we recommend a core sample from a local concrete contractor before purchase — a small investment that avoids the very unpleasant experience of drilling anchor holes into a slab that turns out to be too thin.
Electrical — single-phase 220V vs three-phase
Every home-garage 2 post car lift on the market runs on 220V single-phase electrical service. Commercial three-phase lifts exist, but no residential garage in Dubuque or anywhere else in Iowa has three-phase power available without an expensive utility upgrade. The question for hobby buyers is simpler: does your garage have a 220V circuit or do you need to add one. BendPak and Atlas home-tier lifts pull 20 to 30 amps on their pump motor, so a 30-amp or 40-amp double-pole breaker is standard. Wire size is typically 10 gauge or 8 gauge depending on the run length.
The Dubuque customer had a 220V dryer-style outlet already in the garage on a 30-amp breaker, which was fine for the lift after we confirmed the receptacle style matched the manufacturer’s plug spec. About half the home garages we quote need to add a 220V circuit — a modest job for a licensed electrician if the panel has capacity, more if the main panel needs an upgrade to accommodate the new load. Any hobby buyer should have that conversation with an electrician before ordering a lift, because the freight arrives before the electrical work in most cases and the lift sits in the garage waiting for power. Overhead vs baseplate — which fits your garage
The overhead-versus-baseplate configuration choice is the last physical decision for a home-garage 2 post car lift. Overhead configurations run the shut-off contact and hydraulic hose in a beam across the top of the columns; baseplate configurations run them through a floor-level cross bar between the columns. Overhead is the standard commercial configuration and gives the cleanest bay floor. Baseplate is the hobby-garage workaround for lower ceilings and it saves about 20 inches of overhead clearance requirement.
The Dubuque hobbyist had ceiling to spare and originally leaned overhead for the cleaner look. We recommended baseplate anyway, because his garage floor sloped 3/4 inch across the lift footprint toward a floor drain, and the baseplate crossbar can be shimmed to level while the overhead configuration can’t easily account for floor slope. He took the baseplate spec and reported six months later that he was glad we made the case, because he’d added a compressor and a bench that would have been harder to route around an overhead configuration. Baseplate configurations do put a low crossbar in the walk-through path, which is a minor trip hazard, and they collect debris and fluid drips that overhead configurations don’t. For a hobby garage running two to three lift cycles a week, that tradeoff is easy.
Site survey checklist for hobby installs
The site survey checklist we send home-garage buyers is short and specific. First, measure ceiling at the low corner (not the peak) and note it to the nearest half-inch. Second, take a photo of the garage floor near the intended lift location and note any visible cracks, drains, or seams. Third, find your slab paperwork or plan for a core sample. Fourth, identify your 220V circuit or plan the electrical add. Fifth, measure the door width for the widest vehicle you’ll lift. Sixth, note any obstacles in the ceiling — light fixtures, garage door tracks, HVAC ducts — that might conflict with an overhead configuration.
Seventh, and this is the item hobby buyers skip most, plan the vehicle approach angle. A 2 post car lift needs the vehicle centered between the columns on the way in, which means the garage door has to be at the front of the drive-through path with clear approach. If your garage layout puts the door at an angle to the intended lift position, you’ll be constantly correcting steering to get vehicles onto the pads. The Dubuque customer had a straight-in approach and this was a non-issue, but we’ve walked away from home-garage quotes where the approach geometry made the lift impractical. Approach is the seventh checklist item and it’s the make-or-break one on borderline builds.
Delivery day expectations and first-lift moment
