His specific question at purchase time was overhead versus baseplate – a decision that changes the daily-use ergonomics of the lift more than the model number does – and one year in he had strong opinions worth writing down. Purchase decision: why overhead vs baseplate matters for suspension work

Overhead-style two-post lifts have a crossbar connecting the tops of both columns that carries the hydraulic and equalizer lines. Baseplate-style two-post lifts have a floor plate connecting the columns at ground level, and the vehicle drives over the plate every time. For suspension and shock replacement work, the practical difference is what is above the vehicle: overhead means an overhead crossbar that limits how tall a vehicle can lift; baseplate means clear ceiling above, but the floor plate becomes an obstacle when rolling a floor jack or a coil-spring compressor stand around the bay.

The Quad Cities collector we are writing about worked mostly on 1960s-through-1990s domestic muscle cars and pickups, none of which are especially tall lifted. His ceiling height at the barn was 11 feet, on the low side for overhead but adequate. He asked us early: overhead or baseplate? Our answer for his mix of vehicles and his ceiling was overhead – the baseplate obstacle for a floor jack outweighed the ceiling savings – and we ordered an overhead atlas 2-post lift 10K asymmetric. One year later, that call still holds up, and he has told us so, but the reasoning is more nuanced than the initial phone conversation covered.

Install day: ceiling clearance and the final geometry decision

Our install crew arrived at the barn expecting an 11-foot ceiling and found 11 feet 2 inches at the ridge, tapering to 10 feet 6 inches at the wall – variance the customer had not noticed. The overhead crossbar height at full extension is roughly 12 feet 11 inches – too tall for the 11-foot ridge at the taper. We had two choices: position the lift where the ceiling was highest (against the ridge) and accept a longer walk from the barn door, or reduce the maximum height by using the mid-position lock rather than the full-extension lock.

The customer chose the ridge-position option, and we shifted the lift six feet from where the initial layout had put it. Anchor holes drilled at the new location, columns set, plumb-verified, and installed. Total install time was about eight hours including the layout change. If we had been forced to a baseplate-style install because of the ceiling, the outcome would have been fine but the customer floor-jack workflow would have been permanently annoying – his hydraulic bottle jack sits on a low cart that would have caught the plate edge every time. The atlas 2-post lift overhead configuration was the correct call for his workflow, and the six-foot layout shift was the small cost of getting it right.

First shock job: what he learned on the atlas 2-post lift in month 1

His first job was a full strut replacement on a 1972 Camaro. The Camaro sits low, has a relatively short wheelbase, and needs low-profile pad-adapters to reach the factory-recommended lift points on the rocker pinch. We had speced those adapters at order time, so day-one he had the right hardware in the tool cabinet. The shock and strut swap took him about four hours total on the lift, which included spring compression, upper mount removal, and reinstallation.

What he told us at the one-month mark: the lift asymmetric geometry made it easy to open the driver-side door for tool access at the top of the strut tower, and the lock ladders two-inch spacing let him park the vehicle at exactly the working height that suited his back. He had used a shop lift decades earlier that only had two lock heights – knee-level and shoulder-level – and the fine-grained lock spacing on the atlas 2-post lift was his favorite ergonomic upgrade. He rated the lift a 9 out of 10 at the one-month mark, with the one-point deduction going to the noise level of the hydraulic power unit under load. Not surprising; not a defect.

Month 3: strut compressor and coil spring workflow

Coil spring compression is a task where the overhead configuration on an atlas 2-post lift shines. He mounted a manual strut compressor to the arm of the lift itself, letting the compressor float at exactly the right height to receive the strut assembly as it came off the vehicle. That trick would have been harder on a baseplate lift because the floor plate would have consumed the space where his ground-level workstation could otherwise sit.

He also learned in month three the value of laying out his suspension-job workspace before lifting the vehicle: coil spring, damper, upper mount, and hardware pre-staged on a low cart within arm reach of the lift arms. That workflow makes a strut swap a 3-hour job instead of a 5-hour job. Not something the lift itself changes, but the geometry of the overhead configuration enables it – you have unrestricted floor space under and around the vehicle. A baseplate would have limited that cart placement. His month-three note to us: the overhead choice was already paying off, and if he had ordered a baseplate he would have been frustrated by the plate obstacle a dozen times a week.

Month 6: bushings, control arms, and access under the vehicle

Bushing replacement work involves pressing new rubber or polyurethane pieces into control arms – a bench task once the arm is off the vehicle, but a lift task to remove and reinstall the arm itself. The atlas 2-post lift held the Camaro at chest-height for the arm removal, then brought it back down to knee-height for reinstallation with the new bushings pressed in. Two lock cycles per side, easy work.

The one issue he flagged at month six was a small hydraulic seep from the passenger-side cylinder – nothing major, a stain the size of a quarter on the concrete after a week of standing at height. That is within normal wear for the lift in its first year and we walked him through a fluid top-off during a phone call. If the seep grew we would have shipped him a cylinder seal kit; it did not, and by the annual inspection at month 12 the seep had stabilized and the fluid level was steady. Minor cylinder-seal seepage is common on any two-post in its first year of service – it is the seals bedding in – and if you are seeing quart-a-week losses that is a different story, but a quarter-sized stain over a week is a non-issue.

Month 12: the year-end service and the honest ownership review

Our technician performed the annual ALI-recommended safety inspection at the 12-month mark. All checkboxes passed. Cables in good condition, cylinders holding pressure, lock ladders engaging cleanly, anchor bolts still at torque. Hydraulic fluid topped off – about 8 ounces added, right at the expected first-year seepage baseline. Total service call time was under an hour. The customer ownership review at the one-year mark: he would buy the same atlas 2-post lift again for the same use case, and he would recommend the overhead configuration to anyone with a 10-foot-or-better ceiling doing suspension-heavy work.

His one wishlist item for a hypothetical second lift was an air-driven power unit rather than the standard electric-hydraulic – a preference driven by his workflow of running an air compressor for other tools in the same bay. Atlas does not offer an air-driven power unit on their standard two-post line, so that wish requires a different brand entirely (some Rotary configurations are available with air-hydraulic pumps). Overhead or baseplate: our final recommendation for suspension work

If your ceiling is 11 feet or better and you do not need to lift tall trucks, overhead is the right choice on an atlas 2-post lift for suspension and shock work – cleaner floor, more workflow flexibility, easier tool-cart access. If your ceiling is 10 feet or shorter and you are regularly lifting tall pickups or lifted SUVs, baseplate is the correct trade-off because you gain the vertical clearance you need. If your work is a mix and your ceiling is on the border, ask us to spec the geometry against your actual vehicle list – not against a generic recommendation.
