Single-Phase vs Three-Phase – What Your Panel Actually Has

When the lift motor starts under load, it draws inrush current that will nuisance-trip a shared breaker. Run a fresh 30-amp circuit on 10-gauge wire from the panel to a hardwired disconnect or a locking receptacle at the lift location. Pay the electrician the extra hour to do it right.
GFCI protection is a code question that has changed recently. Current NEC requires GFCI on garage receptacles including the 240V ones. Some lift motors have compatibility issues with GFCI breakers – they can nuisance-trip during startup. Talk to your electrician about the specific motor spec of the lift you’re buying, and consider a GFCI receptacle rather than a GFCI breaker if there’s any doubt. Why CV Axle Work Wants a Specific Kind of Lift
CV axle and half-shaft replacement is one of the more demanding jobs a home garage lift sees. You need the vehicle high enough that the wheels are off the ground with room to slide the axle out sideways past the strut and rotor assembly. You need enough clearance under the transaxle for the pry bar or slide hammer to break the inner CV out of the differential. And you need the ability to swing the strut and knuckle assembly out of the way without the whole car moving around on the lift.
A 2-post lift wins for CV work because you can position the arms to load the pinch welds and leave the entire wheel well exposed. A 4-post storage lift is workable – you can raise the runways to service height and slide jack the wheels off the runway – but it’s slower and the runway is always in your peripheral vision. The Safety-First Approach to Every Lift Cycle
Safety on any lift starts with the sequence: spot the arms correctly under the manufacturer’s specified lift points, raise the vehicle a foot, check the arms haven’t shifted and the vehicle is stable, then continue raising to working height. Once you’re at working height, always raise a click past and lower back onto the mechanical safety-cam. Never work on hydraulic pressure alone. For CV axle work specifically, add one more step: verify the arm restraints are engaged on every arm before you start hammering. CV work involves prying and impact that can shift a car if the restraints aren’t locked. Concrete and Anchor Requirements
Every 2-post lift we install requires 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum. That’s the industry-standard number and it’s what your anchors are designed around.
