An automotive lift for home garage build in Marion started the way most of them do — a builder in the middle of finishing his pole barn called us because he wanted to stack an overlanding rig on top and still have room to work on the daily driver below. He had 30 by 40 feet of concrete, roughly 10 feet 6 inches to the underside of the truss, and a big overhead door that ate real ceiling every time it opened. Before he ordered anything, we drove out with a lift laid flat on the floor to see how it would live in that space. That measurement visit decided the whole project.

Why an automotive lift for home garage rewrites an overlander’s shop plan

An overlanding build changes a garage in ways a normal daily-driver setup does not. The rig is taller than a passenger car, the roof rack adds another foot, and rooftop tents or full-length load bars can add another foot on top of that. When we sat down with the Marion owner and started sketching, the truck-plus-rack stack was 82 inches tall before we ever raised it. If you want to store that rig on an automotive lift for home garage while a second car parks below, you have to account for tire clearance under the deck, the platform thickness itself, roof height at full lift, and about six inches of comfort so nothing scrapes when the door drops in winter.

We laid out three sight lines with a laser: floor to truss, floor to header, and the low point of the overhead door track. That third one catches almost everyone. The garage door rails often hang two to eight inches below the truss depending on the opener setup, and that low point is what governs the top of the vehicle at storage height. Once we had the real numbers, the case for a four-post was obvious — the deck runs the length of the vehicle, so a rooftop tent stays clear of the truss instead of pushing into it. The Marion ceiling-height math we ran on-site

Ceiling numbers get quoted as a single figure, but in a pole barn there are typically three that matter. We measured the concrete slab up to the bottom of the truss chord: 126 inches. Then we found the header above the overhead door: 118 inches. Finally we measured the top of the raised door panel to the truss: 108 inches. That low point is what the lift has to fit under with a vehicle stored on top. Then we added the truck stack — 82 inches — plus 4 inches of platform, plus the lock height at the lowest useful storage position, and the math worked out to just about 3 inches of headroom to spare. Tight, but real.

The lesson we walk every customer through is that a ceiling number scribbled on the back of a building spec sheet almost never matches what the finished space measures. Sagging trusses, drop lights, fire suppression pipe, garage door openers on ceiling-mounted rails — all of these steal inches. Before you order any automotive lift for home garage duty, take a real measurement with a laser to the truss, another to the low point of the open door, and a third to the underside of any pipe or conduit. If the shop is still being built, ask the framer to shim the truss two inches or run higher header boards. We have never regretted asking for more ceiling.

Door swing, opener tracks, and the clearance conflicts we solved

The next hurdle was the overhead door itself. When it rolled up, the panel curled onto a rail that sat about eight inches below the truss chord. If we set the lift too close to the door, the roof rack of the stored truck was going to hit the last panel section every time the door cycled. We had two options. Option one was to move the lift 30 inches deeper into the bay, giving the door panel clearance to fold back without touching the vehicle. Option two was to swap the standard opener rail for a low-headroom kit that folded the panels tighter to the wall. We went with option one because it kept the opener untouched.

We also had to think about pedestrian door swing. The service door on the side wall opened inward toward the lift column, and once the lift was set, the door would clip the post. A five-inch offset fixed it, but that only worked because we had 30 by 40 of floor. In a tighter bay, we would have re-hinged the door to swing out. If you are planning your own automotive lift for home garage install, walk every door and window in the bay while looking at the lift footprint on the floor, and mark on the concrete with a marker where the columns will land. Most conflicts are obvious once the shape is drawn.

Four-post versus two-post for stacked storage in a pole barn

Anyone shopping an automotive lift for home garage eventually asks the four-post versus two-post question, and for stacked storage the answer is almost always four-post. The truck sits on a full-length deck, the wheels are supported by the platform instead of the frame, and locks click every couple of inches so you can pick your storage height instead of committing to fully raised. That last point matters more than it sounds — in the Marion barn we set the storage position five clicks down from the top, which left the roof rack about four inches below the low point of the overhead door track.

Two-post lifts are the right choice for a driveway repair shop where the technician needs full underbody access without a platform in the way. But for a home shop that stores one vehicle overhead and drives the second in and out below, the four-post is faster to load, safer to leave loaded overnight, and much easier on your concrete because it distributes weight across four legs instead of two. In the Marion case, the customer had originally wanted a two-post, and we walked him back to a four-post before he ever wrote a check.

Concrete slab and anchoring in a residential pole-barn floor

Slab spec is where a lot of home garage projects go sideways. The Marion pole barn had a nominal four-inch pour with no rebar and unknown PSI. That is on the thin edge for a four-post storage lift, and it is well under what any two-post manufacturer will approve. We put a core sample through the slab where the front column was going to land and came back with 4.25 inches of 3000 PSI concrete on compacted fill. That was enough for the four-post we specified, but only because the load is distributed across four base plates instead of concentrated on two.

If you are pouring a new pole barn and you already know you want an automotive lift for home garage duty in it, ask your concrete crew for a minimum six-inch pour with #4 rebar on 18-inch centers at the columns. It costs a small amount more, opens up your options for years, and lets you upgrade to a heavier lift later without ripping up the floor. We have retrofitted lifts into thin residential slabs by pouring column pads through the existing floor, but that is more expensive than doing it right in the first pour. What we added after the install: jacks, drip pans, and wheel chocks

The lift showed up on a Wednesday, we set it Thursday, and the customer had his truck stored on it by Saturday morning. But the parts that made the shop actually work came in the two weeks after. First was a rolling bridge jack. On a four-post deck, you cannot pull the wheels off unless you can raise the axles clear of the platform, and a bridge jack drops into the deck rails and lifts one axle at a time. That turned the storage lift into a service lift for the daily driver on the ground while the overlander sat overhead.

Second was a set of drip pans. The overlanding rig had a slow transfer case seep, and dripping fluid onto the vehicle parked below would have been a disaster. Drip pans slot into the runways under the drivetrain and catch anything that comes off. Third was a set of aluminum drive-on ramps and a pair of heavy wheel chocks so the customer could load the truck confidently.
