Every automotive lift for home garage buyer eventually asks the same question in the same words: “which model is actually the right one for my shop?” It’s the question we’ve spent more time answering than any other, because the answer depends on the vehicles, the ceiling, the bay, and the jobs the buyer plans to do. We’re Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, Iowa, and last spring we ran a full model-by-model comparison with a racing team crew chief in town here who needed a home lift capable of state inspection prep on his crew’s tow vehicle and trailer plus everyday service on his personal fleet.

The decision framing: what state inspection prep needs

State inspection requirements vary, but the mechanical checks are consistent: brakes, suspension, steering linkage, exhaust, undercarriage rust, and tire condition. A lift makes every one of those checks faster and more accurate because you can actually see the parts you’re inspecting instead of guessing from a creeper. For our Ames crew chief prepping the team’s Class-B tow vehicle and its enclosed trailer for annual inspection, that meant needing standing-up access to both the tow vehicle’s underside and the trailer’s brakes and suspension.

The tow vehicle was a heavy-duty pickup on the higher side of nine thousand pounds curb weight. That number ruled out anything with less than a ten-thousand-pound rating. The trailer was lighter but longer, and needed a lift with enough runway or arm reach to handle a 20-foot enclosed. That length ruled out standard-arm two-posts that couldn’t reach the trailer’s rear axle. What we ended up comparing were three specific two-post models against one four-post option, and this article walks that comparison as we ran it.

Rotary SPOA10 versus Challenger CL10: the workhorses

Both are ten-thousand-pound asymmetric two-posts, ALI Gold certified, standard-rise. The Rotary SPOA10 has been in continuous production for decades with running improvements. The Challenger CL10 shares core engineering with commercial-grade lifts. Both are what we call default recommendations for a general-purpose automotive lift for home garage build.

Differences are in the details. The Rotary has slightly wider column spacing (nearly 12 feet inside-to-inside), giving more clearance for dual-rear-wheel trucks. The Challenger has a slightly more compact footprint and a lower overall height on the tall-rise variant. Both have safety-cam lock spacing at roughly two-and-a-half inches. Both use polyurethane pad rubbers and offer optional truck adapters. For our Ames crew chief’s heavy pickup, the wider Rotary spacing was the deciding feature; for a customer with a tighter bay, the Challenger geometry sometimes wins. Neither is objectively better. Both will still be running twenty years from now with basic maintenance.

Rotary SPO12: the twelve-thousand-pound step up

When the vehicle weight gets close to the rated capacity of a ten-thousand-pound lift, we recommend stepping up to a twelve-thousand-pound rating. The Rotary SPO12 is a symmetric or versymmetric two-post rated for twelve thousand pounds with beefier arms, larger cylinders, and thicker columns than the SPOA10. For a tow vehicle in the 9,000-plus range, the SPO12 has the working margin.

The trade-off is footprint and cost. The SPO12 is a slightly bigger lift with a taller column and a wider base. It needs proportionally more ceiling and a slightly more robust anchor pattern. For our Ames crew chief with 12-foot pole-building ceilings and a five-inch slab, the site could handle it. For a residential garage with a nine-foot ceiling and a nominal four-inch slab, the SPO12 might not fit at all. Sizing up on capacity is the right call when your worst-case vehicle is close to the limit, and it’s the wrong call when your site can’t accommodate the bigger lift. An automotive lift for home garage build is a compromise between what you want to lift and where you can put the lift.

Rotary AR-15 four-post: the long-vehicle option

Because the crew chief also needed to service an enclosed trailer, we brought a long-runway four-post into the comparison. The Rotary AR-15 is a fifteen-thousand-pound four-post with runways in the 20-plus-foot range, engineered specifically for long-wheelbase vehicles and heavy-duty trucks. It’s a very different geometry than a two-post: drive-on runways, drive-through access, and no side columns to negotiate.

For the tow vehicle plus trailer use case, the AR-15 was tempting. But it lost the comparison on wrench-work access — the runways under the frame rails would block the underside brake and suspension work he needed to do on the tow vehicle. If his primary need had been storage and quick underside inspection of the trailer, the AR-15 would have won. Because he needed real wrench access to the tow vehicle plus inspection access to the trailer, the two-post won and we found a workaround for the trailer (a lower-rise long-arm setup that reaches the trailer axles without lifting the whole trailer). Model comparison is always about matching lift geometry to job list, not about picking the biggest number.

The specs that actually matter side by side

When we build a comparison chart for a customer, we look at seven numbers: capacity rating, overall height, overall width column-to-column, lifting time to full rise, safety-cam lock spacing, warranty term on the power unit, and warranty term on the structure. Everything else is either standard across mainstream lifts (like ALI certification) or an accessory decision (like truck adapters).

For our Ames crew chief, the numbers landed on a Rotary SPO12 versymmetric with truck adapters and a set of long asymmetric arms for the front position. Capacity: twelve thousand pounds, comfortable margin over the tow vehicle. Overall height: within his 12-foot ceiling with room. Overall width: bay clearance verified. Lifting time: fast enough for a home shop. Lock spacing: two-and-a-half inches, dense enough for any working height. Warranty: multi-year on both power unit and structure. State inspection workflow on the finished install

Once the lift was in and cycled, we walked him through the inspection workflow. Vehicle onto the pads at the factory jack points, lift to eye level for wheel and brake inspection, lower one notch for suspension and steering-linkage inspection, lower another notch for exhaust and undercarriage rust survey. The whole inspection takes about twenty minutes on the lift versus close to an hour on the ground with a creeper.

He’s now done three inspection prep cycles on the tow vehicle in the year since install, plus a handful of oil changes and one brake pad replacement. His crew has borrowed the shop a couple times when their commercial lift was tied up, and he’s found the home lift is genuinely commercial-grade — not a step down from what they use professionally. That is the whole promise of an automotive lift for home garage purchase in the certified-brand tier: you are not buying a hobby-grade tool, you are buying the same lift a professional shop would use. The only difference is the volume of vehicles cycled through it.

How to run this comparison for your own build

The way to land on the right model is to answer four questions in order. What is my worst-case vehicle by weight, wheelbase, and roof height? What is my worst-case site (ceiling, floor, bay width, access path)? What is my primary job mix (wrench work, storage, inspection, or a blend)? What is my parts-availability requirement in ten and twenty years? Once you have those four answers written down, the model choice is almost automatic among the mainstream certified lifts.
