A central-Iowa RV and trailer service shop opened a second bay last spring, and their first purchase was a pair of automotive two post lifts. They called Auto Lift Services in Ames because they needed the lifts spec’d for tire and wheel work on car-and-light-truck-sized tow vehicles, not just the trailers themselves. We showed up with a coring rig and pulled a sample from each bay to verify psi — 4,100 psi on the test, well above the 3,000 psi minimum. Anchors went in per the manufacturer spec: 3/4-inch wedge anchors, six per column, torqued to 150 ft-lbs.

The surprise was a hairline crack that spidered out from one anchor about a week after install. Not a failure — the anchor held — but a reminder that even good concrete can telegraph stress at the anchor points if the slab wasn’t reinforced with rebar or fiber. We came back, epoxied the crack, and monitored it for six months. It never grew. First month: tire and wheel work reality check

By the end of month one, the shop had done about sixty tire jobs across both lifts and hadn’t touched a warranty phone call. The rise speed on the Rotary was faster; the Challenger felt more solid at the top with a heavier truck. Neither lift complained. Both automotive two post lifts hit their duty cycle without a hitch. The techs preferred the CL10 for the tow trucks and the SPOA10 for the tow vehicles — exactly the split we’d predicted at the spec meeting.

Month six: the pucker moment

Around month six, one of the techs called about a slow drift-down on the Challenger. Not dramatic — maybe half an inch per hour on a loaded lift — but enough to notice. That’s a classic hydraulic seal starting to weep. We came out, dropped the cylinder, inspected the seal, and found a tiny burr on the piston rod that had scored the seal lip. Replaced the seal, honed the rod, and the drift was gone.

The lesson wasn’t the seal itself — those wear over time — it was catching it early. The tech noticed because they’d been trained to safety-lock the lift at every height and to visually check that the mechanical locks stayed engaged. If they’d just parked the lift up all night on hydraulic pressure alone, they’d have found the truck lower than they left it. We tell every shop that buys automotive two post lifts from us: hydraulics fail slowly, safety locks fail rarely, and if you use both you buy yourself years of margin.

Warranty, parts, and the Iowa response time

The shop had one warranty claim during year one — a proximity switch on the arm restraint that went intermittent. Neither lift has needed anything beyond the seal repair and the prox switch. The pair of lifts has paid for itself in throughput compared to jack stands alone.
