He had a spreadsheet of prices, three quotes from box stores, and a floor plan drawn on a napkin. Where the car lift automotive decision tree actually starts

Before you shop, answer three questions honestly: what is the heaviest vehicle you will lift in the next five years, how much overhead clearance do you have from finished floor to the lowest ceiling obstruction, and what electrical service is available at the bay location. Those three numbers close off more than half the catalog before anyone talks about brand or price. A crew chief who is lifting stock trucks and pace cars is a different customer than a heavy-duty shop lifting dually diesels. A 10,000 lb capacity two-post covers the passenger-car and light-truck range that most brake and rotor work lives in, and it does so without the extra column height and cost that a 12,000 lb column brings to the table.

The reason we start with those three questions is that everything else — brand, symmetric versus asymmetric arms, single-point versus dual-point release, hydraulic versus screw drive — is downstream. Get the top three wrong and you will spend the next two decades working around a lift that never quite fit the room. Get them right and the rest of the car lift automotive selection is mostly preference and budget. That is why we ask them first when a shop calls, no matter how excited the buyer already is about a specific model on our site.

Match capacity to what you actually lift, not the biggest thing you own

Racing crews and general shops both overshoot on capacity. The logic feels safe — bigger is better, right — but a 12,000 or 15,000 lb column is taller, heavier, and more expensive to install than a 10,000 lb column, and if you never lift anything over 8,500 lb in daily service the extra rating is money that does not come back. Every commercial car lift automotive we sell is ALI Gold Certified, meaning it has real third-party testing behind its rated capacity, so a 10,000 lb rated column is not a marketing number. It is a tested load.

The exception is if your crew hauls a car trailer with a tow rig that itself exceeds the passenger-car range. If your daily driver is a three-quarter-ton diesel with a service body, you are in 12,000 lb territory. If you also do a lot of heavy pickup work or you plan to grow into fleet trucks, a 12,000 or 15,000 lb column protects you. But for a brake-and-rotor bay where the heaviest thing is a full-size pickup with a race car in the pit-lane trailer, the 10,000 lb Rotary SPO10 or Challenger CL10 pair is where nine out of ten Davenport shops we quote actually land, and the twenty-year math on those columns is honest.

Two-post versus four-post for brake service and rotor swaps

Brake work almost always wants a two-post. The reason is simple: rotors, calipers, and pads live on the wheel, and a two-post lifts the vehicle by the frame or pinch weld, leaving all four wheels hanging free for tire and wheel removal. A four-post lifts by the tires, and any wheel work then requires a rolling jack to lift a corner off the runway. That extra step is fine once in a while, but if brake service is your bread and butter, a two-post is faster on every single job and safer on high-torque impact work because the wheel is not sitting on a runway that can flex.

For a car lift automotive setup dedicated to brake service, we default to a symmetric or versymmetric two-post with dual-point release, direct-drive equalizer chains or hydraulic cylinders in each column, and swing arms that reach into the pinch-weld pockets of both modern unibody cars and older body-on-frame trucks. A four-post has its place — alignments, quick-lube, storage — but if brakes are the daily job, the two-post wins on speed and ergonomics every time.

Concrete, ceiling clearance, and power at the bay

We turn away roughly one in ten prospective buyers because their building will not support the lift they want. Concrete is the first check. A commercial two-post rated to 10,000 or 12,000 lb needs a minimum of 4.25 inches of 3,000 psi concrete under the base plates, and older shops with 4-inch pours sometimes have thinner spots at the slab edges. We ask for a concrete core sample or the original slab spec sheet before we sign a big install job. If the slab is not there, we can pour a new pad — but you want to know that before the lift arrives, not after.

Ceiling clearance is the second check. Most two-posts have an overall height around 12 feet with the overhead beam installed. A shop with 11-foot ceilings needs a floorplate model instead, which routes the hoses along the floor between the columns. Power is the third check. A single-phase 220V circuit is standard for most commercial columns, but a few models want three-phase, and a few older shops only have single-phase available. Miss that detail and the electrician bill is bigger than the freight charge. Twenty-year total cost of ownership: what really adds up

The purchase price of a commercial two-post is a small fraction of what you spend on that lift over twenty years. Do the math. A quality 10,000 lb two-post in the Rotary or Challenger price band lives in the low-mid four-figure range. Installation runs another four figures depending on concrete, electrical, and freight. Over the next twenty years, you will replace lift cables once or twice, swing-arm restraint gears once, hydraulic seals once, and possibly a hydraulic cylinder if you skip preventive maintenance. Those are all normal, and the parts are on our shelf.

What you should not have to pay for over that lifetime is a whole new lift. The failure mode that ends a lift early is almost always neglected maintenance — cable inspection skipped, hydraulic fluid never changed, restraint gears left dry — not the lift itself wearing out. A Rotary or Challenger car lift automotive column installed on good concrete with annual ALI inspections will still be lifting cars in 2046. A no-name import can be a coin flip. That is the real twenty-year math: not what you pay Friday, but what you pay every year afterward. Installation, freight, and the numbers people forget

Freight from the manufacturer to your door on a full-size two-post is typically LTL truck, curbside delivery, and you supply the forklift or Skytrak to unload. That last part surprises people. The driver will not unload a 1,200-lb column with a pallet jack. If you do not have a forklift, we can arrange delivery with a lift-gate truck at added cost, or we bring our own equipment for a full turnkey install. Installation itself takes our crew about a day and a half for a two-post on prepared concrete: mark the base plates, drill and set anchors to the manufacturer torque spec, plumb the columns, run hydraulic hoses and electrical, set the arms, bleed the system, and lift and hold a test load. The number people forget is anchor certification. In Iowa the concrete anchor spec is called out in the install manual, and if the anchors are set wrong the lift can walk under load. We torque every anchor and document the values in an install checklist that goes back to the shop owner. If you are working with any installer, ask them for that checklist. It is not optional and it is the difference between a lift that lasts and a lift that fails.

What we tell every crew chief before they buy

The last stop on the decision tree is the buying conversation, and it is the same for a Davenport racing crew chief, a small independent shop, or a national fleet. Do not shop on price alone. The cheapest commercial two-post in the catalog often has the highest lifetime cost because the parts are hard to source, the manuals are thin, and the warranty is a phone call to a distributor overseas. The second thing we tell every buyer is to install one lift correctly before you buy a second. It is tempting to buy two or four lifts for a new build all at once, and sometimes that is the right call. But we have seen shops buy three lifts, install them fast, and discover on lift number one that they wish they had chosen a floorplate or a taller column. Buy one, install it, run it for a month, then order the rest. That single step has saved shops we work with more than one big mistake.
