A weekend mechanic in the Quad Cities called us last month asking whether his 24-by-30 detached garage could handle a real car lift automotive setup, one strong enough to drop a transmission on a Saturday without the whole slab flexing under the load. That single question is why we wrote this checklist. Before you spend a dime, walk your garage with the eleven items below and skip the expensive mistakes.

Measure Ceiling Height Before You Buy Anything
The single most common reason a Quad Cities weekend mechanic ends up with the wrong lift is ceiling height. A pole barn built to store a pickup usually has 10 to 12 feet of clear underside, enough for a mid-rise scissor but not enough for a full-rise two-post that raises a lifted three-quarter-ton to shoulder height. We ask every hobbyist to measure from the finished slab to the lowest joist, bar joist, or truss chord, not to the peak of the roofline. Twelve feet is our practical minimum for a two-post, and even then we spec the low-ceiling version with shorter columns. Fourteen feet lets you buy without compromise.
If your garage is under 12 feet, do not force a two-post into it. A four-post storage lift with an 82-inch rise, or a scissor mid-rise, will handle transmission and driveline work for a weekend mechanic just fine without the ceiling fight. We have talked plenty of hobbyists out of the taller lift they thought they wanted because their building would not let the arms swing under the door track. Measure twice, then send us the number. We would rather sell you the right lift once than see you back out a purchase after the truck shows up in your driveway. That first tape-measure walk is the whole game for a home car lift automotive install.
Slab Thickness: What Weekend Garages Usually Get Wrong
The second thing to check is your concrete slab. Manufacturers spec a minimum for a reason, and the numbers that show up in the install manual are not suggestions, they are what the anchor bolts need to bite into so the columns do not walk under load. For a 9,000 to 10,000 lb two-post, we want 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, minimum. For 12,000 lb and up we want 4.25 to 6 inches depending on brand. A lot of Quad Cities pole barns from the 1990s were poured at 3.5 inches over compacted fill and never inspected, which will pass for parking but will not pass for lifting.
Take a hammer drill and pull a small core near where a column will land. If you hit dirt at 3.5 inches, you are not out of the game. You can pour a reinforced pad, roughly 4 by 4 feet under each column, tied into the existing slab with epoxied rebar. We have walked several weekend mechanics through this exact fix, and it adds a modest cost to the project but preserves the rest of the garage. Do not skip this step. A car lift automotive install fails at the concrete before it fails anywhere else, and re-anchoring a lift after the fact is a full teardown you do not want.
Power, Panels, and the 220V Reality Check
Every two-post and most four-post lifts run on 220V single-phase power. A weekend mechanic’s detached garage is often wired for a chest freezer and a couple of shop lights, 30 amps of 110V total, and the panel sits inside the house 60 feet away. Before you buy the lift, walk to your electrical panel and count open breaker slots. You need one 30-amp double-pole slot for the motor. If your subpanel is already full, you are looking at either a panel upgrade or a fresh 60-amp feed from the main house.
The wiring cost from a licensed electrician in eastern Iowa ranges from a few hundred dollars on a short indoor run to well over a thousand when you have to trench between buildings. Do not try to run the lift on an extension cord or off a welder outlet. The amp draw at startup will pop the breaker, and the low-voltage condition will slowly cook the motor. We have had weekend customers get halfway through their first transmission service and discover their power drop cannot handle the pump. Get the electrician quote before you buy the lift, not after. This is one of the few car lift automotive install items you cannot solve after the fact without ripping conduit.
Transmission Service: Two-Post or Four-Post Honestly
For a weekend mechanic whose main use case is transmission service, we usually recommend a two-post over a four-post. The reason is access. Pulling a transmission from a Ford Crown Vic or a Ram 1500 means dropping a bell housing full of fluid past the crossmember, and you want the underside of the vehicle completely open, no runways in the way. A two-post gives you that. A four-post is safer for storage and rolling work, but every transmission and clutch job on a four-post ends up needing a rolling bridge jack, which is another line item on your invoice.
The trade-off is arm-swing engagement. A two-post requires you to spot the pickup points on each vehicle you lift, every make and model is a little different, and set the arms correctly under the pinch welds or frame. It takes maybe three minutes per lift once you are used to it, but a weekend mechanic switching between his own truck, his wife’s car, and a neighbor’s SUV needs to be honest about whether he wants that recurring task. For most Quad Cities hobbyists doing three or four transmission jobs a year, a 10,000 lb symmetric two-post is the right car lift automotive answer. Overhead Obstructions, Trusses, and Where the Bay Actually Ends
Ceiling height is not the same thing as usable overhead space. A weekend mechanic on the Illinois side of the river sent us photos last spring of a beautiful 14-foot pole barn with a wood truss sitting right where his column head plates needed to bolt. He would have found that out the day the crate arrived. Before you buy, get a step ladder and physically stand where each column will land, arms out to the sides, and confirm the bay above your head is empty. Bar joists, HVAC ducts, garage door openers, and the overhead door track itself all quietly steal usable height.
Overhead two-post lifts run a hydraulic hose and equalizer cable across the top of the columns at roughly 12 feet 6 inches. If your garage door opener rail sits at 11 feet 8 inches, you will interfere. In that case we spec a floorplate model where the cable and hose run through a channel at slab level. Floorplates trip a little more often on shop floors, but for a weekend garage they are a fine choice. Either way, do not assume the overhead is clear because the roofline is high. Trusses and door tracks eat height without warning, and every car lift automotive install we have redone lost time to somebody who did not check the truss line first.
Delivery Access: Doorways, Driveway, and the Forklift Problem
Two-post lifts arrive on a common carrier truck that cannot back up a soft-shoulder gravel driveway in March. The crate weighs between 1,600 and 2,300 pounds depending on model and column height. If your Quad Cities garage sits at the end of a 200-foot lane through a low spot, plan the delivery for July when the ground is dry, and plan how you are getting the crate from the truck to the door. A forklift on a trailer is the cleanest answer. A neighbor with a skid steer and pallet forks works too. Two guys and a floor jack does not.
Measure your overhead door opening. A standard 8-by-8 garage door will pass a column-and-carriage assembly on a pallet jack, but a 7-foot door will not clear the columns lying flat. If you have a 7-foot door, we ship the lift with columns strapped to a lower pallet position, but you have to tell us in advance. And measure your driveway width. A semi-trailer needs about 12 feet of clear turning room to swing into most residential driveways. If your driveway is 10 feet wide with a mailbox at the mouth, we drop the crate at the road and let you shuttle it in.
Your Pre-Purchase Car Lift Automotive Checklist
Here is the punch list we walk every Quad Cities weekend mechanic through before we take the order. Print it, walk your garage, and answer each item honestly before you call us. First, measure ceiling height at the lowest joist or truss chord. Second, measure slab thickness by drilling a test core. Third, count open breaker slots and confirm 220V access. Fourth, identify overhead obstructions in each column footprint. Fifth, measure overhead door width and height. Sixth, measure driveway width and note any low spots. Seventh, identify the pickup points on the vehicles you actually plan to lift. Eighth, decide two-post versus four-post honestly. Ninth, pick a delivery day when the ground will bear a semi. Tenth, line up the electrician quote. Eleventh, line up two friends and a rented forklift for install day.
