An Ankeny off-road and overlanding builder called us about a car lift automotive install for his growing build-and-storage business. His shop had outgrown one bay: he was building customer overland rigs — lifted trucks, kitted-out midsize pickups, custom bumpers on full-size SUVs — and simultaneously storing seasonal overland vehicles for out-of-state customers who visit central Iowa in the summer. The workflow was chaotic and his one lift was doing double duty. He needed a real bay layout that could handle both jobs in parallel. Here is the case study of that install, from first site visit through final walkthrough, with the layout decisions we made together and how the shop runs today.

The initial site visit and the car lift automotive layout problem

We showed up at the Ankeny shop on a Tuesday morning with a tape and a laser. The building was a 40×60 pole barn with 12-foot ceilings, a 4.5-inch concrete slab, a 200-amp single-phase panel, and one existing two-post along the north wall. The owner was doing everything — bumper welding, suspension builds, tire mounting, seasonal storage of customer overland rigs — on that one lift. Cars were parked bumper-to-bumper across the whole shop floor because there was nowhere else to put them.

The layout problem was obvious: he needed to separate storage from active service, and the existing single lift could not support both. We laid out a new car lift automotive plan on his floor with chalk lines: keep the existing two-post for active bumper and suspension work, add two four-post lifts along the south wall for storage duty, and leave the center of the shop as clear drive-through space between the two zones. That layout used the existing electrical, needed only minor concrete verification under the new lift locations, and gave the shop three lifts total for a business that was clearly ready to run three or four vehicles simultaneously. Two hours of chalk lines and we had the plan.

Selecting the storage lifts for overland-rig weights

Overland rigs are heavier than stock vehicles. A stock midsize pickup is around 4,700 lb. Add a full overland build — bumpers, winch, roof rack with rooftop tent, drawers, on-board water and fuel tanks, oversized tires — and the same rig can be 5,500 to 6,000 lb. A full-size SUV with a full overland build can be 7,000 to 8,000 lb. That means the storage lifts need capacity above 8,000 lb with a safety margin.

We spec’d 9,000 lb four-post lifts for the Ankeny shop — home-storage-style four-posts rather than commercial-grade — because the storage duty cycle is low and the four-post loading is even across four points. The BendPak HD-9 covers this range at a reasonable price point, and it is what we installed. For the active-service two-post that was already in place, we did a full inspection, replaced the cables (they were near end of life), and re-torqued the anchors as part of the install package. That existing lift became the active-service lift for bumper and suspension work while the two new four-posts became the storage rack. Each car lift automotive in the shop now has a clear primary role, and the workflow between them is straightforward.

Concrete verification for two additional lift locations

Adding two four-posts to an existing shop meant we needed to verify the concrete at the new lift locations. A 4.5-inch slab is right at the ALI minimum for a 9,000 lb four-post, but right-at is not comfortably-above. We took core samples at each planned lift location. Both came back at 4.5 inches with 3,200 psi concrete — passing but not with much room to spare.

The decision at that point was whether to pour reinforcement pads or install on the existing concrete. We went with the existing concrete for these two lifts because the load per anchor on a four-post is spread across a wider footprint than a two-post, and the concrete met spec. We documented the core sample results with photos, thickness measurements, and compressive-strength results, and filed them with the install paperwork. That documentation is what the Ankeny owner points to if he ever sells the shop or has an insurance question about the lift installation. Every car lift automotive install we do in Iowa gets that documentation. It is not extra work at that point; it is baked into how we run install day, and it protects both the shop owner and us.

Freight, delivery, and unload logistics for two lifts

Two four-post lifts arrived on one LTL truck with a coordinated delivery. The lift pallets weighed about 3,200 lb each. The Ankeny shop did not have a forklift, so we brought our own for the delivery. That saved the owner from renting equipment on a specific delivery day, and it kept the unload smooth. Total unload time: about 45 minutes for both lifts.

What can go wrong on a two-lift delivery is a mismatched arrival — one lift arrives Tuesday, one arrives Thursday, and the shop is trying to install with half the equipment. We coordinate with the freight company to ensure both lifts ship on the same truck when possible. When they cannot ship together, we schedule the install for after both have arrived and staged. Every car lift automotive delivery gets a confirmation call the day before to verify the truck is loaded and on schedule. Small habit, big impact when the shop owner has a Saturday install scheduled and cannot afford a partial delivery. The Ankeny install went off cleanly because we ran the logistics tight from the start, and that logistical discipline is part of what an Iowa-based installer brings to the job.

The install sequence — three days, three lifts

Day one was the two-post overhaul. We inspected the existing lift, replaced the cables, greased the arm restraint gears, torqued the anchors, changed the hydraulic fluid, and load-tested the lift. That existing two-post is now good for another decade of service. Day two was the first four-post install: mark base plate locations, drill and set anchors, position runways, run hydraulic hoses and cables, connect electrical, cycle the lift, and load-test.

Day three was the second four-post install with the same sequence. By end of day three, the Ankeny shop had three fully functional car lift automotive stations: one active-service two-post and two storage four-posts. We ran the owner and his one employee through the operator manual for each lift, walked them through the daily and monthly inspection checklists, and left laminated inspection cards at each lift. The paperwork went into a folder we labeled Shop Equipment Records and set on the office desk. That folder is the seed of the equipment binder that grows over the years as inspections and maintenance are documented. Simple system, big value at insurance-audit time or resale time.

How the shop runs today, six months later

Six months after the install, the Ankeny shop is running a completely different workflow. The two-post is booked five days a week for active bumper, suspension, and mechanical work on customer overland builds. The two four-post lifts hold customer vehicles in various stages — a fully built midsize pickup waiting for owner pickup, a partially built SUV on hold for parts, a stored overland rig mid-summer for an out-of-state customer.

The workflow separation between active service and storage means the two-post is never blocked by a vehicle waiting for parts, and the storage lifts do not tie up bay space. Cars roll in, get worked on for a couple of days, roll to a four-post if they are waiting for parts, and come back to the two-post when parts arrive. Overland customers who visit central Iowa in the summer drop their rigs on a storage lift for a week and pick up ready-to-drive. The whole business runs cleaner. Every car lift automotive in the shop is earning its keep, and the owner recently mentioned he is thinking about a fourth lift — probably another four-post — because the storage side is busier than he expected.

What the case study taught us about Ankeny overland builds

Every install teaches us something. The Ankeny case study taught us three things. First, off-road and overlanding shops need more storage capacity than they initially estimate. The owner started with one lift and no storage plan; he ended up needing three lifts and clear storage-versus-service zones within six months.
