A municipal fleet manager on the Iowa-Missouri border called us about a car lift automotive cable that had started making a clicking sound during descent on their four-post lift. His techs ran daily oil-change work through that bay — fifteen to twenty vehicles a shift, mostly pickups and municipal SUVs. The lift was eight years old and had never had its cables inspected. That call turned into a two-hour walkthrough of every cable, sheave, and safety latch in his three-bay shop, and it’s the walkthrough we do for every fleet customer. Why cables are the first thing we inspect on any fleet lift

On a four-post car lift automotive design, four steel cables carry the runways up and down. Each cable is rated well above the working load, but that rating assumes intact strands, correct lubrication, and clean sheaves. Cables fail in three ways: broken outer strands, corrosion from the inside out, and stretch beyond usable range. All three are progressive and all three become visible before catastrophic failure — if someone actually looks.

The clicking sound on the border-town lift turned out to be a broken outer strand on the driver’s-side rear cable catching the sheave every rotation. The cable still functioned but a single failed strand means the remaining strands carry more load, which accelerates fatigue on the neighbors. ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) standards call for immediate replacement when any visible strand breakage appears. We swap cables in sets of four, not one at a time, because a fresh cable in a set of three worn ones only lasts as long as the worst neighbor.

The visual inspection anyone at the shop can do

The daily visual inspection on any car lift automotive setup takes under two minutes per bay. Lower the lift to full stop. Walk each column and each cable end-to-end. Look for broken strands, bird-caging (where strands spiral out from the core), kinks, rust, or dark oil on the cable surface. Dark oil means the internal lubricant has migrated outward, which means the interior of the cable is running dry — a corrosion path.

On the border-town lift, the visual walk turned up not just the broken strand but also a dry section on the passenger front cable where the sheave alignment had shifted slightly and the cable was riding against the flange. That’s a wear point that creates a broken strand within another six to twelve months. We straightened the sheave, re-tensioned all four cables to spec, and put the lift on a six-month re-check calendar. The tech we trained runs the same walk daily now. It costs him nothing and it catches problems while they’re still fixable rather than after they’ve become a shutdown.

Replacement intervals: what the manuals really say

Manufacturer cable-replacement intervals vary. Rotary and Challenger both call for cable inspection at every daily use and replacement based on condition, not calendar. In practice, a fleet-duty four-post car lift automotive setup running fifteen-plus cycles a day will need cables replaced somewhere between the seventh and tenth year. Light-duty shop use — three to five cycles a day — pushes replacement out to twelve or fifteen years. Home use rarely reaches replacement in the owner’s lifetime.

Environmental factors matter. Shops with high humidity, salt exposure (auto-detailing, winter road salt on fleet vehicles), or hydraulic fluid drips onto the cables see faster degradation. The Iowa-Missouri border shop we’ve been describing pulls in fleet vehicles caked in winter chloride from December through March. That accelerated their cable wear. We now recommend they wipe the cables monthly with a lithium-based cable lube specifically formulated for wire rope. Costs under thirty dollars a bottle and roughly doubles cable life. It’s the single highest-ROI maintenance item on any four-post lift.

Sheave inspection: the piece nobody checks

Cables get all the attention. Sheaves — the pulleys the cables run over at the top of each column — almost never get inspected until they fail. On a car lift automotive four-post, each sheave has a groove profile matched to the cable diameter. Over years, the groove wears deeper and the cable starts to seat differently, which changes the load path and accelerates cable wear.

Sheave inspection needs a groove gauge or, in a pinch, a set of feeler gauges and the original spec. If the groove is more than 15 percent deeper than original spec, the sheave needs replacement. On the border-town lift, all four sheaves were still within spec — the shop got lucky. But we’ve walked into shops where the sheave grooves were doubled in depth and the cables were essentially dragging in ruts. Those cables lasted maybe two years. Sheave replacement is cheaper than cable replacement. Doing both together, if the shop can afford it, resets the maintenance clock on the entire lift’s carrying system. Safety latches and mechanical stops

Every ALI-compliant car lift automotive four-post has mechanical safety latches at multiple positions along the column. Those latches drop into a locking slot every foot or two of rise, so if a cable fails the runway stops within inches instead of falling. They are the last line of defense and they need daily verification.

Testing latches is simple: raise the lift, listen for the click at each locking position, then lower onto the latches and confirm the runway sits stable. If a latch fails to engage, the lift is out of service until repaired. The border-town shop’s latches all worked, but two of them had accumulated enough shop debris (metal shavings, old oil, salt residue) that they were slow to drop. We cleaned each latch pivot with brake cleaner and a wire brush, applied a light dry-film lube, and re-tested. Total time under ten minutes per column. Slow latches are the failure mode nobody catches until an inspection. Fleet managers should verify latch engagement audibly at every daily walk.

Documentation, records, and ALI inspections

For any municipal fleet operation, documentation matters as much as the actual inspection. ALI-certified inspectors sign off annually on car lift automotive equipment used in commercial or municipal service. That inspection log becomes a defense document if there’s ever a claim. Any missed inspection window creates liability.

The border-town fleet manager we worked with kept his inspection records in a three-ring binder in the shop office. When we did the walkthrough we digitized his last four years of records, scanned the ALI certificates, and stored them in a shared folder his insurance carrier can access on request. Small effort, real risk reduction. We also gave him a monthly maintenance checklist he can print and initial. Between annual ALI inspections and daily visual walks, that middle-tier monthly check is where most fleet lifts either pass or fail their next audit. If your fleet lift has never had a formal ALI inspection, that’s the first call to make, not the tenth.

What we recommend for any Iowa-Missouri border fleet

Municipal fleets on the Iowa-Missouri border see a specific wear profile: winter salt, spring mud, and fast summer duty cycles. Any car lift automotive setup in that duty pattern needs cable lube monthly, latch check daily, sheave inspection annually, and ALI certification annually. Cable replacement based on condition, not calendar, but budget for a full set in the eighth or ninth year of fleet duty.

If your shop hasn’t done a full walkthrough recently, do the one we described above — cables, sheaves, latches, records. If anything’s marginal, stop the lift, order the parts, and re-inspect after installation. The border-town manager we worked with is a year past our first walkthrough now. He’s had zero cable incidents, one sheave replaced pre-emptively, and his insurance premium hasn’t ticked up despite his fleet growing by four vehicles.
