The honest answer is that the lift is one variable in a bigger equation — bay depth, column stance, arm reach, ceiling clearance, and traffic flow around the technician all matter as much as capacity rating. Why the Ankeny Bay Question Comes Up Every Winter

Ankeny dealerships call us most often in November and December because that’s when leadership signs off on next year’s capital budget and service managers are looking at their oil pan gasket backlog. A subframe drop or oil pan reseal ties up a bay for three to five hours — and if the bay isn’t laid out right, the technician wastes another hour repositioning the vehicle, walking around columns, and fetching tools from a bench that ended up on the wrong side of the lift base.

The pattern we see is that older dealership shops were built when a bay only had to fit a two-post lift with narrow reach and a mid-size sedan. Today the same bay has to swallow a lifted crew-cab pickup, a fleet transit van, and a low-slung sports coupe on the same day. When service managers ask about a car lift, they’re really asking whether one lift can handle the whole rotation without slowing the flag hours. That question has a real answer, but it starts with measuring the bay honestly.

Real Bay Dimensions: What Fits and What Doesn’t

A standard dealership service bay in Ankeny is 12 feet wide by 24 to 28 feet deep with 14-foot ceilings. That’s the minimum for a two-post overhead car lift rated 10,000 to 12,000 pounds. Column-to-column inside width should be at least 11 feet 3 inches to clear dually mirrors and long crew-cab doors — anything tighter and technicians will nick paint on customer trucks. Column height on most 10K two-post units runs 145 to 148 inches, so a 14-foot ceiling gives you two to four inches of clearance above the overhead shutoff bar.

If your bay is only 12-foot ceilings, you need a floor plate lift instead — the overhead bar goes away and the equalization cables run through a plate at the base. Floor plates cost about ten percent more and the plate becomes a trip hazard near a pit door, but they solve the ceiling problem cleanly. Depth-wise, allow 24 feet minimum so a full-size pickup fits between the entry and the back wall with room to open the tailgate. If you’re planning subframe work on a dually, add another two feet for cart access.

Choosing a Car Lift for Oil Pan Gasket and Subframe Work

The car lift most dealership techs prefer for oil pan gasket and subframe work is a Rotary or Challenger clearfloor two-post rated 10,000 or 12,000 pounds with asymmetric arms. Asymmetric arms rotate the vehicle five to seven degrees toward the columns, which puts the driver’s door aft of the column and gives the tech clear access to the door and rocker without ducking. For oil pan gasket work specifically, that door access matters because the tech is climbing in and out to reach the top of the block during timing chain reseals or rear main jobs that overlap with the pan.

Capacity-wise, a 10K unit covers 95 percent of the light-duty passenger and SUV work a dealership sees. Move up to 12K if the shop takes in Ram 2500/3500 or Ford F-250/F-350 gassers on a regular basis. For diesel Super Duty and Ram HD trucks, a 15K car lift is the honest answer — a 12K is technically rated to lift them but the arms are working near their limit and the pad extensions strain when the wheelbase is stretched. Column Stance, Arm Reach, and Vehicle Overhang

Column stance — the distance between the two columns measured at the base — determines whether a car sits on the pads without the frame contacting the column. A standard 10K car lift has a column stance around 132 to 138 inches wide-side to wide-side. Sports coupes and low sedans with a wheelbase under 105 inches will have overhang past the columns, which is fine, but rear-engine or mid-engine vehicles need extra care because the balance point sits aft of center and pad placement gets fussy.

Arm reach front and rear tells you what wheelbase range the lift handles. Most dealership-grade lifts spec a front arm reach of 30 to 55 inches and a rear reach of 42 to 78 inches. That covers a wheelbase from about 85 inches through 148 inches. When we lay out a bay we always ask the service manager to pull a VIN report on the last 500 vehicles serviced so we can pick a lift whose arm range comfortably brackets the longest and shortest vehicles you see. Guessing here costs money later because the wrong arms mean the tech is jockeying the truck back and forth to catch pickup points.

Ceiling Clearance and the Two-Truck Trap

The trap we see in older Ankeny shops is that the bay was designed for cars, ceiling height is 12 feet, and now the service department needs to lift crew-cab pickups. A crew-cab F-150 or Silverado at full lift height with a topper or aftermarket rack pushes past 100 inches — and the overhead shutoff bar on a two-post sits right at the top of a raised vehicle. If the bar contacts, the lift stops. If the bar is disabled (which we do not recommend but see done anyway), the truck can hit the ceiling.

Two solutions work. First, install a floor plate model that removes the overhead bar entirely — you gain about 20 inches of usable head clearance. Second, cut the concrete and drop the lift base four to six inches into a recessed pit. This is more expensive but preserves the ability to run an overhead bar and gains ground clearance under a raised truck. For dealerships doing regular lifted crew-cab work, we usually recommend a floor plate car lift with 200-inch rise capability paired with a bay ceiling of at least 12 feet 6 inches.

Power, Drainage, and the Floor Under the Lift

A two-post lift needs 220V single-phase power for the pump motor, typically a 20-amp dedicated circuit. In older Ankeny buildings the panel may not have capacity — we’ve done a dozen installs where the electrician had to run a subpanel from the service before we could set the lift. Budget several hundred to a little over a thousand dollars for that electrical work if the shop is older than 1985. Newer buildings almost always have the panel capacity but the outlet placement may need to move; the drop should land within 12 feet of the pump column.

Concrete matters even more. Dealership specifications call for 4,000 psi concrete at minimum four inches thick with rebar or fiber reinforcement. We test the slab with a core drill before every install because a slab that looks fine can be under-strength or have hidden rebar cutouts from prior remodels. Drainage is not required for two-post lifts but if the bay is on an exterior wall or catches wash water, a trench drain within eight feet of the lift base keeps the columns dry. We’ve seen columns rust from the base up in ten years when standing water sits at the foot.

Installation Timeline for a Car Lift in an Ankeny Bay

Once we scope a bay in Ankeny, the timeline runs about six to eight weeks from purchase order to a running lift. Stock is usually in our Iowa warehouse or on a Rotary truck out of Madison, so freight is two to five days. The install itself is a one-day job for a two-post if the concrete passes core testing, or a two-day job if we’re recessing the base into a cut slab. We schedule around service department downtime — usually a Friday afternoon into Monday morning so the bay is back online for Tuesday’s first appointment.
