Every fleet shop we serve has the same underlying problem: a mixed inventory of vehicles, techs who are on and off the floor all day, and no time for arm-pad juggling. A car lift drive on solves that by letting the tech pull the vehicle straight up the runways, drop the safeties, and walk under. There is no lifting-point cross-reference, no re-checking pad heights, no worry about a rocker panel bent by a previous shop. For engine oil pan gasket work in particular, the runways give the tech a stable overhead workspace and enough side clearance to swing the pan out without wrestling.

In the northern Missouri fleet garages we visit, most managers eventually specify a 12,000 lb or 14,000 lb capacity car lift drive on because it covers everything from a Crown Vic to a Ford F-350 dually with room to spare. Capacity matters, but so does runway length — a 200 inch runway will comfortably handle an extended-cab pickup, while a 172 inch runway leaves the front tires hanging on a crew cab. That single question saves more headaches than any other spec on the sheet, and it protects your investment for the next fifteen years.

208V vs 240V Single-Phase — Read the Nameplate Before You Buy

The first electrical question we ask every fleet manager is what the panel actually delivers. Most industrial and municipal buildings in northern Missouri have 208V three-phase service; residential-style rural garages have 240V single-phase. This matters because a lift power unit rated for 240V single-phase will run slow and hot on 208V, and one rated for 208V three-phase will not run at all on single-phase. The nameplate on the power unit tells the truth. Read it before you buy, not after the delivery truck leaves.

For a fleet shop with 240V single-phase, we typically spec a two-horsepower or three-horsepower single-phase power unit that pulls around 25 amps at start and settles around 15 amps under steady load. That is well within the reach of a 30 amp breaker on 10 gauge wire. If your building has 208V three-phase, we swap in a three-phase power unit that raises the vehicle noticeably faster and pulls less amperage per leg. Speed matters when a tech is doing eight oil-pan-gasket jobs a week; three-phase saves minutes per lift cycle. That is the electrical trade-off in plain English, and it drives the rest of the wiring conversation on your car lift drive on install.

Three-Phase Power: When It Actually Pays Off

Three-phase is not universally better. If your fleet does two or three lift cycles a day, single-phase is fine and the wire is cheaper. But if you are cycling the lift a dozen times a shift — say a county garage running preventive maintenance rotations — three-phase pays off in raw time saved. A three-phase power unit typically raises a 6,000 lb pickup in about 45 seconds, versus 60 to 75 seconds on single-phase. Multiply that by cycles per week and it adds up to real bench-time recaptured across a full year.

The other reason to specify three-phase is heat. Single-phase motors run hotter at the same duty cycle, and in a hot Missouri July with the shop doors closed against pollen, that motor lives a shorter life. A three-phase motor pulls balanced current across the legs, runs cooler, and generally outlasts its single-phase counterpart by years. For a busy fleet operation, that reliability is worth the modest upcharge on a three-phase pump. We keep both options in stock and can swap the power unit before shipment if you need to change spec after checking your panel. Not every buyer needs three-phase on their car lift drive on, but if you have the service already at the shop, use it.

Wire Gauge, Breaker Size, and the Disconnect Rule

Once you know the voltage and phase, the wire and breaker follow directly from the nameplate amperage. For a typical 240V single-phase two-horsepower power unit pulling 15 amps steady, we recommend 10 AWG copper on a 30 amp breaker with a dedicated circuit. Do not share the circuit with anything else — a compressor kicking on at the same time can trip a shared breaker and leave a vehicle stranded mid-lift. For three-phase 208V or 240V, drop to a 20 amp breaker with 12 AWG and a three-pole breaker in the panel.

The National Electrical Code and most municipal inspection offices require a lockable disconnect within sight of the lift power unit. This is not optional. When a tech services the pump, they need to physically lock out the power at eye level, not walk to a panel in a mechanical room fifty feet away. We recommend a heavy-duty non-fused disconnect switch mounted on the wall behind the power unit at chest height. That single detail is one that new fleet shops miss, and it is the number one reason first-inspection walkthroughs fail. Before the electrician leaves, have them label the disconnect with the lift identifier so an outside safety auditor can find it without asking. Deck Height, Jack Points, and Real Oil-Pan Gasket Access

Deck height under a four-post car lift drive on is not the same across brands. A Rotary four-post commercial deck sits about six inches lower to the runway floor than some competitors, which sounds trivial but matters at the ceiling. If your Missouri fleet garage has a 13 foot clear ceiling, you can safely raise a Ford Excursion to full working height with a Rotary deck; on some other brands, the roof antenna will scrape the joists. For engine oil pan gasket work specifically, the two things you care about are the drain clearance and the jack point access. A rolling bridge jack that runs across the runways lets the tech lift one axle off the runway to drop the crossmember. Without that jack, an oil pan on many modern V8 engines cannot come out — the crossmember is in the way. Skip the jack and you will regret it on your first F-150 3.5L job. These are lessons paid for by fleet shops before you.

Where Our Install Crew Stops and Your Electrician Starts

Boundaries save arguments. When our install crew arrives at your Missouri fleet garage, we handle the mechanical assembly — anchoring the columns to your slab, installing the runways, wiring the internal cables and hydraulic lines, testing hydraulic pressure, and calibrating the safety locks. What we do not do is run building wiring. Your electrician provides the 240V or 208V branch circuit terminated in a labeled disconnect within sight of the power unit, plus a properly sized junction box on the wall.

We arrive with a whip and connector already installed on the power unit, and we terminate that whip into the disconnect on install day. The electrician does not need to be on-site when we come — they can do their portion the week before, leaving the disconnect wired and tested. This split saves you money because we do not mark up the electrical labor, and it keeps the trades in their lane. For a car lift drive on going into a municipal shop, your building code officer typically wants the electrical work inspected before the lift is energized. We coordinate with your electrician on timing so the inspection happens after their work but before ours, and both trades sign off cleanly. Two weeks is a reasonable buffer between electrician arrival and our install crew rolling up.

Safety Inspections and the Log Sheet Every Fleet Should Keep

Fleet operations are audited. That is the difference between a home garage and a municipal shop, and it drives our recommendations. Every ALI-certified car lift drive on comes with an annual inspection requirement documented in the ANSI/ALI ALOIM standard. For a fleet, we recommend an annual third-party inspection by an ALI-certified inspector plus a monthly in-house visual check of cables, safety locks, and hydraulic hoses. The in-house check takes a trained tech about ten minutes; the third-party inspection takes about an hour and comes with a signed sticker for the column.

Keep a paper log at the lift showing the date, inspector name, and any items flagged. If a state or federal safety auditor arrives, that log is the first thing they ask for. A perfectly maintained lift with no paperwork looks worse in an audit than a lift with minor cosmetic wear and complete records.
