An RV and trailer service shop in eastern Nebraska came to us about a car lift last spring for a bay they were converting from parts storage into a working service bay. Their existing work was almost entirely trailer axles, brake controllers, and RV-specific systems, but they had started taking in general daily-maintenance work on customers’ tow vehicles — Silverados, F-250s, Sequoias, the pickups and SUVs their trailer customers were driving. That mix pushed them toward a proper two-post hoist, and they wanted a partner who could handle freight into eastern Nebraska, coordinate the forklift and rigging on install day, and then follow up through the first year of operation. Why an RV and Trailer Shop Bought a Car Lift

The eastern Nebraska shop had been getting by for years with a floor jack and heavy-duty stands for the occasional tow-vehicle service work that came through the door. As their trailer customer base expanded, more of those customers started asking about oil changes, brake work, and general maintenance on the trucks pulling the trailers. Turning that work away was leaving real revenue on the table, and doing it on stands was slow, dangerous, and hard on the techs’ backs. The owner sat down with his lead tech, sketched out a year of projected tow-vehicle work, and concluded that a proper car lift was overdue.

The vehicle mix was heavy on three-quarter and one-ton pickups pulling fifth-wheels, plus a strong contingent of SUVs pulling utility trailers. That argued for a 12,000-pound class two-post as the working spec — real margin above the heaviest routine vehicle, ALI Gold certification, and a parts pipeline that could reach eastern Nebraska on a predictable schedule. We recommended a Rotary SPO12 asymmetric, single-phase 220V, delivered from our Ames warehouse with our own install crew handling everything through commissioning. The owner signed off on the spec and we moved to the freight and install logistics.

Freight, Unloading, and the Forklift Problem

Freight from Ames to eastern Nebraska is a manageable haul but not a local run. We coordinate with a regional freight carrier we have used for years for this specific corridor, and the trailer arrives at the customer site typically two to three business days after ship date. The shipment includes the two columns crated separately, the hydraulic power unit crated, the arms and hardware in a shared crate, and the anchor kit in a small parts box. Total shipping weight is well over a ton, and the columns alone are unwieldy enough that a proper forklift or overhead crane is required for unloading.

The eastern Nebraska shop had a forklift but the operator had never unloaded a boxed car lift before, and the crate geometry can be surprising. We sent them a pre-arrival checklist with photos of the crate, weight distribution notes, and specific pick-point locations for the forklift tines. On the actual delivery day, the freight driver had the trailer backed to the shop’s overhead door and the shop’s forklift was in position when the trailer opened. Unload took about 45 minutes with no drama. We have seen this go badly at other shops that did not read the pre-arrival checklist, so we now push very hard on that pre-work with every customer.

The First Install Day — What Actually Happened

Our two-tech crew rolled into eastern Nebraska early on a Monday and had the layout marked on the slab by mid-morning. The slab had been core-sampled two weeks earlier during our site visit — 6-inch thick, 3,700 PSI, no post-tension, no rebar strike in the anchor zones. Textbook. Drilling the anchor holes with the hammer drill and setting the wedge anchors took the balance of the morning. By lunch we had both columns erected and the cross-tie in place. Hydraulic plumbing, reservoir fill, and initial air bleed filled the afternoon.

Tuesday morning was cable calibration, arm assembly, arm restraint pin function-testing, and a full unloaded test cycle. First loaded test used a Silverado 2500 the shop had staged in the parking lot, and we ran the machine through five full raise-and-lower cycles at full extension to verify everything was in spec. The owner walkthrough happened Tuesday afternoon with all three of the shop’s techs present. We covered controls, safety features, daily walk-around, monthly cable inspection, quarterly restraint pin inspection, and the annual service schedule. First billable job was Wednesday morning — an oil change on a customer’s F-250.

Month One: The Learning Curve

The first month with a new car lift always has a small learning curve for the techs, and the eastern Nebraska crew was no exception. Two of the three techs had used hoists before at previous shops, but the third was newer to the trade and had done all of his previous underbody work on stands. He needed extra time on the pad-placement discipline — which is the single most important habit any lift-tech develops. We had left a laminated pickup-point diagram for the twenty most common vehicles in the shop’s book, and he referenced it on every job for the first several weeks until the muscle memory built up.

Cycle-time recapture became visible almost immediately. Oil changes that had been forty-five-minute jobs on stands were dropping to twenty minutes on the hoist. Brake pad swaps that had eaten a full morning on stands were finishing in an hour and a half. By the end of the first month, the shop’s tow-vehicle service throughput had roughly doubled versus the previous baseline, and the techs were significantly less fatigued at the end of each shift. That is the operational payoff a certified hoist delivers, and it is why we push hard on the initial spec — the machine has to match the workload for the productivity gains to actually show up.

Month Six: Wear Patterns We Started Tracking

By month six the shop had accumulated about eight hundred lift cycles on the SPO12, which is a healthy first-year workload but well below the design margin of the machine. Cable tension was still within spec at the quarterly inspection. Arm restraint pins were showing normal use wear with no anomalies. Cylinder seals were bone-dry with zero seepage. Hydraulic fluid was still within its clean-oil analysis range. Everything on the machine was performing as designed, which is what we expect from a properly-spec’d and properly-installed hoist in a moderate commercial workload.

The wear patterns we did start tracking at this point were the small consumables — the plastic wear pads on the pickup points, which do get eaten a bit by repeated compression, and the arm hardware bushings, which develop a little slop after several hundred cycles. Neither is a safety concern; both are on our annual replacement schedule. We noted them in the shop’s file and pre-ordered replacements to be swapped at the twelve-month service. That kind of proactive tracking is the difference between a machine that surprises the shop at year three and a machine that is boring, predictable, and always ready. Boring is the goal.

First Anniversary Service Visit — What We Found

Twelve months after the install, our tech drove out to eastern Nebraska for the first anniversary service. That visit is a scheduled part of every install package we sell, and it includes a full inspection, consumables swap, cable tension recheck, arm restraint pin cleaning and lubrication, hydraulic fluid analysis sample, and any warranty documentation updates for the machine’s file. It also includes a sit-down with the shop owner to review the year’s operational metrics and adjust the service cadence if the workload has shifted meaningfully.

What we found at the anniversary was everything we expected to find on a healthy machine at that mileage. Cables in spec. Cylinders dry. Restraint pins clean. Hydraulic fluid clean and within tolerance. Plastic wear pads replaced. Arm bushings replaced. Anchor torque rechecked and all bolts at spec. The shop’s throughput had continued to grow, and the tow-vehicle service line was now roughly a third of the shop’s total revenue — a significant addition to what had been a nearly pure trailer business a year earlier. The car lift had paid back its turnkey cost inside twelve months on that revenue growth alone, which is a faster payback than most shops see and is a testament to how much latent tow-vehicle demand existed in that specific market.

What We Would Do Differently — Advice for Eastern Nebraska Shops

Looking back on the year with the eastern Nebraska owner, there are two small things we would do differently on the next similar install. First, we would push harder on scheduling the anchor drilling for a weekday when the slab was still relatively cool from an overnight temperature drop. Concrete drills cleaner in cool slabs than in slabs that have been baking under a summer roof. It is a small operational detail that produces slightly better anchor holes and slightly less bit wear. Not a safety issue at all — just a quality-of-work refinement we noticed on the second and third installs we did in similar climates.

Second, we would recommend that any RV and trailer shop adding tow-vehicle work invest in a proper transmission jack at the same time they buy the hoist. The eastern Nebraska shop was doing their first few transmission jobs with a rented jack and eventually bought their own after the third rental. Having it available from day one would have accelerated their entry into that specific service line by several months. For any shop in eastern Nebraska or western Iowa considering a similar workload expansion, our advice is straightforward: spec the right car lift, prep the right slab, and buy the right ancillary tools at the same time. Do it once, do it right, and the year that follows will look a lot like this one.
