This article is the decision tree we walked with them — the trade-offs between overhead and baseplate design when alignment accuracy matters, the budget tiers that actually exist in the commercial market, and why the wrong geometry can turn a $200 alignment into a two-hour argument with a caster reading that refuses to sit. The Two-Lift Problem Every Race Team Runs Into

Race teams that also do alignment work almost always land on the same realization eventually: one lift can’t be the perfect tool for both jobs. A two-post is fast for suspension work, brakes, exhaust, and everything else where you need clear access under the car. A four-post or a full-rise scissor alignment lift is what you want for the actual alignment reads, because you need level, drive-on runways with slip plates and turntables to release the suspension into its true resting position.

Our Ames race team had a single two-post they’d bought used, and they were doing alignments on cheater plates with dubious accuracy. The lead tech was chasing ghost caster readings across three cars. In our first hour together we established that no car lift decision would fix the workflow until they added a proper alignment platform. The two-post stays as the fast-work bay. The alignment reads move to a dedicated setup. That reframing changed everything about the recommendation.

Budget Tiers for a Mixed-Use Race Shop

Our decision tree for race shops layers on a second budget tier when alignment is part of the plan. Entry level is one used two-post plus a four-wheel alignment kit on the shop floor with plates — cheap but slow and less accurate. Mid-tier is a new commercial two-post around $5,000 installed plus a used four-post alignment lift in the $6,000 to $9,000 range from our stock. Top tier is the same commercial two-post plus a new scissor alignment lift with integrated slip plates and turntables at $12,000 to $18,000 installed.

The Ames race team landed on mid-tier because their alignment volume was low but their standards were high. We sold them a Rotary two-post overhead for daily work and paired it with a well-maintained used Rotary four-post alignment lift we had in stock. Total spend under $17,000. The alignment readings started matching between runs the same week the second car lift went in, because the reads were finally happening on truly level, dedicated runways.

Overhead vs Baseplate for the Two-Post Bay

Once the alignment problem is off the two-post’s plate, the overhead-vs-baseplate question becomes cleaner. Overhead two-posts route cables and hydraulic lines through a beam above the vehicle, with a hard cutoff bar that prevents ceiling damage when a tall vehicle rises too high. Baseplate two-posts route everything through a cast plate between the columns, keeping the top of the bay open for tall vehicles like haulers and lifted trucks.

For a race team working on low race cars with 13-foot ceilings, the overhead is almost always right. It keeps the floor clear of trip hazards and gives you a physical ceiling stop that saves antennas and roof-mounted lights when a crew member walks a vehicle up without looking. The baseplate is the right choice only when you’ll routinely service tall vehicles under 11-foot ceilings, or when the enclosed hauler needs to visit the same bay. Our Ames team had 13 feet and only race cars plus a low tow rig, so overhead was an easy call for the daily-driver car lift.

Alignment Accuracy: Why the Lift Under the Read Matters

The most misunderstood part of an alignment setup is that the geometry of the platform under the vehicle is baked into every reading. A four-post alignment lift that is not perfectly level under load, or that has stretched cables letting one corner ride low, will produce alignment reads that shift as the vehicle repositions. Turnplates and slip plates depend on the platform being level within tight tolerances — usually 1/16 of an inch across the length of the runway.

This is why we don’t recommend doing alignment reads on a two-post. Even a perfectly installed two-post has some cross-arm variance under load, and the reads will show it. It’s also why we spec fresh cables on any used four-post before we sell it to a shop planning to do alignments. The Ames team’s used Rotary four-post got a new cable set and turnplate service before it left our floor, and their alignment repeatability across the two cars in their fleet has been within a tenth of a degree ever since. That’s what a properly set-up car lift under an alignment read buys you.

Concrete, Ceiling, and the Prep Nobody Talks About

Two lifts in a bay means two sets of prep, and both matter. The two-post needs six inches of 3,000 PSI concrete under each column — four inches is manufacturer minimum, but six adds decades to the anchor life. The four-post alignment lift is easier on concrete because the load is distributed across four bases, but you want the floor flat under those bases. If the floor slopes toward a drain, you’ll be shimming for the life of the alignment lift, which is fine, but plan for it.

Ceiling clearance for a two-post overhead is typically 12 feet minimum for full rise; the four-post alignment lift needs less because vehicles ride on runways at closer to 4 feet of lift. Our Ames team had adequate ceiling for both, but they hadn’t measured the door opening on the alignment lift’s intended bay. We caught a two-inch clearance issue with the shop’s overhead door before install, saving a call-back. Always measure the door opening — vehicles come in, not just onto the car lift.

Install and Commissioning

Installing two lifts in one bay is a coordination job. We do the two-post first because it’s a fixed-position install, then we align the four-post around it with room for the front doors to open on the alignment bay. Our crew takes about a day and a half to install both, plus a half day to commission the alignment lift’s turnplates and slip plates against a straightedge and level. Race teams get a walk-through on both machines with the lead tech present, and we hand out laminated operator sheets for the crew rotation.

Commissioning matters more on the alignment lift than the two-post. We use a precision digital level to verify runway flatness under a known load, and we mark the alignment lift’s target ride height with a piece of tape so the tech always parks the vehicle at the same commissioned height. That habit alone eliminates 80 percent of the alignment-repeatability problems we see on used car lifts installed by shops that skipped a proper commissioning. Ask your installer whether they include this step, and if the answer is a shrug, keep calling installers.
