A car lift makes exhaust and driveline access on a farm truck about ten times easier than crawling around on a creeper under a jack, and if you run a farm shop in southwest Iowa, this is probably the single job you’ll do more than any other. Exhaust hangers rust through, U-joints seize, driveshafts get bent by rocks, and every one of those jobs is a shoulder-and-neck killer on the floor. This checklist walks you through the exact questions we ask southwest Iowa shop owners before we quote anything, plus what your existing setup will actually be worth as a trade-in when it’s time to upgrade.

Two-Post Versus Four-Post for Exhaust Work
For exhaust and driveline access, a two-post car lift is almost always the right answer. A four-post is great for storage and alignment, but the runways get in the way of the exhaust and driveshaft on most trucks. A two-post picks the vehicle up under the frame or pinch weld and leaves the entire underside open. When we walked a Page County shop owner through this last year, he told us he’d been running a scissor lift for eight years and was tired of working around it. Same day we swapped him to a 12,000 lb symmetric two-post and he described the change as “like getting a whole extra hour every day.”
If your work is mostly exhaust replacement, driveline U-joints, transmission service, and general under-vehicle access, a two-post is the choice. If you also want to store a second vehicle overhead, a four-post pays off, but you’ll want swing-arm jacks (bridge jacks) on the runways to open up wheel-off work. Most southwest Iowa farm shops we install go two-post, capacity 10,000 to 15,000 lb, with three-stage arms so a Ranger fits as easily as a Ram 3500.
Column Height and Ceiling Clearance
Pole buildings in this part of the state are often built with 10-foot side walls, sometimes 12, occasionally 14. On a standard 10K or 12K two-post car lift, column height is 145 to 155 inches. That’s 12 feet 1 inch to 12 feet 11 inches, and you need clearance above the columns for the overhead shut-off bar or overhead-style hydraulic hose. Standard overhead lifts need about 13.5 feet minimum ceiling. If your ceiling is 12 feet or less, you want a floor-plate lift with the hydraulic hose routed through the base, no overhead bar.
The other number: peak lift height. On most two-posts the pads go up about 71 inches. That means a Ram 3500 crew cab, which is 78 inches tall, tops out at around 149 inches (12 feet 5 inches) at the roof at full rise. If your ceiling is 12 feet flat, that truck won’t go all the way up. Practical fix: raise the truck as high as it clears, do your exhaust and driveline work at that height. Bigger trucks may only get 60 inches of rise, which is still plenty for standing work under a driveshaft.
Arm Style: Symmetric Versus Asymmetric
Farm trucks generally do better on a symmetric two-post car lift, because they’re front-heavy. Asymmetric was designed for cars with the engine in front and roughly 60/40 weight bias to the front, which works great for sedans but is a fight on a diesel dually. A symmetric lift positions the vehicle centered between the columns, arms swing to catch the frame equally, and load distribution stays neutral. On an F-350 or a Chevy 3500, that’s what you want.
Three-stage arms are non-negotiable for a mixed farm-shop workload. The shortest stage reaches in for a low sedan, the longest stage reaches out for a lifted truck with a wide frame. If a supplier tries to sell you a lift with fixed-length arms, walk away. On our commercial car lift lines we spec three-stage front arms and often three-stage rear arms as well. It’s a $200-ish upcharge on some models and it opens up the range of vehicles you can service without spacers.
Concrete and Anchor Requirements
Farm shop concrete varies wildly. Some pole buildings were built with a proper 4-inch reinforced slab. Some got poured with whatever the crew had left over. Before we install a car lift, we drill a small test hole to verify actual thickness. Rotary and Challenger commercial two-posts require 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 psi minimum concrete for 10K to 15K capacity. Higher-capacity lifts go up from there.
If your slab is short, options are: cut and repour just the anchor pads (roughly 4×4 feet at each column, $1,200 to $2,000 total), or repour the whole bay if it’s badly cracked. Don’t just longer-anchor into thin concrete and hope. A two-post lift under load applies serious moment force at the base of the column, and thin concrete will spall or pop the anchors. Trade-In and Resale Value on Your Old Lift
If you already have a lift and you’re thinking about upgrading, real numbers matter. A used, ALI-Gold-labeled, working two-post car lift from a name brand (Rotary, Challenger, BendPak) with paperwork typically resells at 45 to 60 percent of new price up to about year 10, then depreciates faster. A no-name import lift depreciates immediately to salvage value, sometimes $500 to $1,500, because nobody wants to install a lift they can’t get parts for.
We take trade-ins on a case-by-case basis when we’re installing a replacement, and the two things we look at are: is the label present and legible (ALI Gold or ETL certified), and are the cables/chains/hydraulic components serviceable. A clean 10-year-old Rotary trade-in against a new commercial lift often nets $2,500 to $4,500. A 15-year-old Chinese import with no paperwork often nets zero. When you buy your first lift, buying a brand with resale value literally pays for itself when you upgrade.
Financing the Right Package From Day One
Farm shop cash flow is seasonal, and financing a car lift purchase with terms that match your cycles is easier than paying up front from a variable-balance operating line. Extended terms are available at competitive fixed rates through our banking partner if 12 months is too tight. Roll the install and any needed slab work into the same finance package to keep everything on one payment. Most importantly, don’t over-finance a lift that’s too small for your work. It’s cheaper long term to buy a 12K when you’d use it than a 9K just because the payment was lower. Right-size the lift first, then find terms that fit.
