A car lift that works beautifully for a passenger-vehicle shop can be the wrong tool for an RV and trailer service bay, and the reason usually comes down to one decision made early: overhead versus baseplate configuration. An Iowa City shop we equipped last spring runs mostly Class C motorhomes, gooseneck trailers, and the occasional pickup, and their first year taught us — and them — a few things about how a lift lives inside a mixed-service business. This is that year-one ownership story, from the day we walked their bay for measurement through their sixth-month check-in call and what we would tell the next shop in the same boat.

Why the bay’s tallest customer decides the lift style

When we walked the Iowa City bay, the owner initially wanted an overhead-style car lift because they are cheaper by roughly 10 percent and cleaner-looking on the floor. Then we asked him what the tallest thing he would ever service was. He paused. His answer: a 12-foot Class C with a rooftop A/C shroud that sometimes came in for chassis work. The bay ceiling was 15 feet. A standard overhead cable beam sits at 12 feet 4 inches with the arms down. That is a 4-inch gap, and 4 inches disappears the first time somebody drives in with a ladder on the roof rack.

We steered him to a floorplate two-post instead. The baseplate configuration puts the equalizer cables in a channel across the floor, keeps the overhead completely clear, and lets him lift anything up to the truss line. Year one, he has serviced two Class Cs and a delivery van he would not have been able to fit under the overhead beam. That single design decision paid for the cable-in-floor trip hazard he now paints yellow every six months.

Capacity math for a mixed-service RV bay

The other big call was capacity. A common car lift is 9,000 or 10,000 pounds, which is plenty for passenger vehicles and light pickups. But a loaded Class C with full tanks can weigh 12,000 to 14,000 pounds, and a fifth-wheel gooseneck on a jack can dump 4,000 pounds through a single balance point. We recommended 12,000 lb capacity as the practical minimum for the Iowa City shop, and 15,000 lb if the budget allowed.

They landed at 12,000 lb symmetric with adapter stack extensions. That combination lets them lift a Ford Transit at the manufacturer pinch-welds, a lifted diesel pickup at the frame, and a shorter Class C at the axle points — three different pad heights, one machine. If they had gone with a 10K, they would have been declining tow-hauler work by month three. The lesson: size the car lift for the 90th percentile of what walks through the door, not the average. The 10 percent that would not fit is where the margin is.

Ceiling height, door opener rails, and truss webs

Ceiling height on paper does not equal usable ceiling height in a shop. When we did the walkthrough at Iowa City, the peak was 15 feet, but the truss bottom chord came down to 13 feet 6 inches at the lift footprint, and the overhead-door opener rail sat at 12 feet 11 inches. On a baseplate lift the truss and door rail did not matter — we cleared everything by a wide margin — but if he had insisted on overhead-cable, we would have been threading a 12-foot-4 beam between a 12-foot-11 rail and a 13-foot-6 truss with maybe 3 inches to spare on either side.

The other thing the owner did right: he sent us photos before the sale, not after. A single phone photo of the bay ceiling with a tape measure held vertically saved us both a whole conversation. We recommend every shop owner shopping a car lift do the same. Take one photo from each corner of the bay, include a person or tape for scale, and email them before you ask for a quote. We will spot problems on the photo that you would not think to mention.

Arm design for exhaust, driveline, and undercarriage work

An RV and trailer shop spends most of its car lift time under the vehicle doing driveline, exhaust, and brake work. That means the arm geometry matters more than the top lift height. A three-stage front and two-stage rear arm set will reach a wider range of wheelbases — from a short Transit Connect to a 40-inch-longer 4500 chassis cab — without repositioning the machine. The Iowa City shop specified three-stage front arms and has used the extra reach on nearly every heavy vehicle they have serviced.

Arm restraints matter too. Every lift we sell has automatic gear-lock restraints that engage as soon as the arms leave the floor, but on a shop doing driveline work, techs walk under the vehicle constantly. We coach every shop to check restraint engagement audibly on every raise — you should hear the pawl drop into the tooth. If you do not hear it, cycle down and check the mechanism. Year one at Iowa City included one adjustment on a rear arm restraint we caught on the six-month inspection. Small stuff, but the kind of small stuff that turns into a claim if you ignore it.

Cable maintenance is a monthly ritual, not annual

On any equalizer-cable lift — overhead or baseplate — the cables are the wear item, and they need eyeballs on them more often than most owners realize. On a shop lift running 8 to 15 cycles a day, we recommend a visual cable check every month and a formal inspection every quarter. On a hobby garage lift running 2 cycles a week, once a year is fine. The Iowa City shop got put on a monthly check because of volume, and year one has been uneventful — no fraying, no visible strand breaks, no unusual noises.

The failure mode is dramatic when it happens. A stretched or broken cable on one side unbalances the carriages and can drop a load if the safety pawls have not engaged. The fix is cheap — a fresh cable set and a couple of hours labor — and a call to us usually catches it a year before the failure. What the six-month check-in surfaced

We schedule a courtesy six-month call with every new commercial install, and Iowa City’s surfaced three things worth documenting. First, the shop had added a lift-adapter set they did not know they needed for one of the Class B vans on their book. We shipped it in two days. Second, the power unit hydraulic fluid had picked up a light shimmer of moisture — normal for a bay near a wash rack, but worth flushing at the 12-month mark. Third, the concrete around the driver-side anchors had a hairline crack that ran into an existing control joint. We tagged it for the annual inspection and it has not moved since.

None of those issues would have shown up in a strict warranty conversation, and none needed a parts sale. That is the value of a real six-month check-in versus a one-and-done delivery. Every car lift we install goes on that schedule, and the shop only calls us for the twelve-month if something on the six-month tag needs a repeat visit.

What we would tell the next RV shop

If you are an RV or trailer service shop shopping for your first or replacement car lift, three pieces of advice from Iowa City’s year one. First, choose baseplate over overhead unless your ceiling is genuinely tall (16 feet or more) and you never touch anything over 10 feet tall. The floor cable channel is a manageable trip hazard; a smashed A/C shroud is not. Second, size capacity for your 90th-percentile vehicle, not your daily average — 12,000 lb minimum for any shop that touches Class B vans or duallies. Third, plan for arm-adapter accessories on day one, not month six.
