A dirt-track racing crew based on the northeast side of the Des Moines metro asked us last summer for a car lift for storage that could hold two chassis between weekend races and still give quick CV axle access on Tuesday nights. Their trailer bay was 40 feet deep, they had 220V wiring already run for the tire machine, and they needed one more piece of equipment that would earn its keep between May and September. Why a racing team needs a car lift for storage more than a service lift

A racing crew chief thinks in weekly cycles. Sunday tears down the car after the race. Monday cleans and inspects. Tuesday and Wednesday are the fix days. Thursday preps for the next race. Friday and Saturday travel. Under that schedule the chassis needs to sit off the floor for three to four days a week so the team can walk around it, sweep under it, and clean parts on the bench without moving the car. A pure service lift with arms and pads is not designed for that; a car lift for storage on runways is exactly designed for it, and the wear profile matches.

Our Des Moines racing team runs a late-model dirt car about 2,400 pounds and a mod chassis about 2,800 pounds. Neither vehicle taxes a 7,000-pound storage lift, but the frequent up-and-down cycles do stress the cylinder seals harder than a hobbyist car would. We spec a heavier cylinder or a replaceable-seal cylinder for racing customers because we know the maintenance cadence is faster. Getting that call right at order time saves a mid-season teardown to swap a seal that could have been ordered with the lift.

CV axle and half-shaft access on runway-style lifts

A CV axle and half-shaft swap on a dirt car is a mid-week job. You pull the axle nut, disconnect the ball joint or the upper control arm, and slide the axle out of the hub. On a car lift for storage that job runs cleanly when the vehicle is at mid-rise, about half of full rise. You want the wheel hub at roughly waist to chest height so you can pull the axle straight without bending over the runway lip.

The critical accessory is a rolling jack. A rolling jack slides down the runway to whichever wheel you are pulling and lifts the suspension by the frame or the lower control arm so the wheel hangs free. Without a rolling jack the wheel sits on the runway and the axle cannot back out of the hub cleanly. With a rolling jack the axle drops in about ten minutes. Our racing customer ordered one rolling jack because most of his mid-week work is one corner at a time; a two-rolling-jack setup is faster on full axle swaps but adds cost and storage bulk. One jack was the right call for his volume.

Cylinder seals and rebuild kits for a car lift for storage

Every hydraulic car lift for storage uses at least one cylinder to raise the runways. That cylinder has a piston seal, a rod seal, and a wiper seal, and each one wears differently. The piston seal separates the pressurized side from the return side and takes the most abuse under load. The rod seal keeps hydraulic oil inside the cylinder as the rod strokes in and out. The wiper seal scrapes dust and grit off the rod on the return stroke. On a racing lift with a heavy weekly cycle the wiper seal usually goes first because dirt and race-track sand find their way onto the rod.

We keep seal kits in stock at our Ames warehouse for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas storage lifts. A full kit runs in the middle-hundreds price range and takes about two hours to install if you have the right seal-driver tools. We shipped our Des Moines racing customer a seal kit with his original order as a spare, and he stashed it in the toolbox for the middle of next season. That is the right way to plan for a racing car lift for storage: order the lift, order the seal kit, order one spare hose, and you are covered for two seasons without a wait.

Rise height and mid-race chassis prep

Mid-race prep, meaning tire changes and quick adjustments in the trailer bay between hot laps and features, does not usually happen on a lift; it happens on jack stands next to the trailer. What happens on the lift is chassis inspection between events. That inspection means bird’s-eye views of the front suspension, wheel-off looks at the brake calipers, and full-frame checks for cracks after a hard hit. A car lift for storage with a rise height of 66 inches puts a driver’s waist at the correct level to eyeball the front suspension straight without ducking under.

Higher rise, 78 to 82 inches, lets you walk under the chassis without hitting your head, which is worth the extra concrete footprint if you have the ceiling. Our Des Moines trailer bay had 14-foot ceilings, so we spec’d the higher rise. That way the crew chief can push a service creeper under the chassis with a light in one hand and a ratchet in the other and not have to duck to inspect the fuel cell or the rear-end housing. The car lift for storage becomes a mid-week inspection station as much as a storage rack.

Cross-week configuration: race chassis on top, hauler underneath

Between race weeks the racing team stores the primary chassis on the lift and pulls the crew hauler into the same bay underneath. That configuration only works if the lift’s cross-runway clearance clears the hauler’s roof and mirrors. On our Des Moines customer’s build we measured the hauler at 8 feet 2 inches to the top of the box, plus a couple inches for the shark-fin antenna. That put the runway underside at 8 feet 6 inches minimum, which we hit comfortably with the 78-inch-rise lift on his 4-inch-thick slab.

Turning the configuration around takes about 15 minutes: lower the chassis, roll it off the ramps to the shop-floor jack stands, pull the hauler out, roll the chassis back on, and raise the lift. That workflow only exists because the team ordered a car lift for storage instead of a service lift. A two-post would have made the hauler-underneath scenario impossible because of the arm swing radius. First-time buyers of racing lifts often miss this configuration flexibility, and it is one of the biggest reasons the four-post storage layout is worth the initial spend.

Electrical, hose runs, and pump-motor placement

Every car lift for storage we ship comes with a power unit that mounts to one of the columns and connects to the hydraulic cylinder with a rated hose. Racing teams have to think about where that hose runs because the trailer bay has forklifts, dollies, and generator cables competing for the same floor space. We usually run the hose along the column and up into the runway rather than across the floor, and we ask the customer to confirm which side of the lift the tire machine and the generator live on so the pump-motor placement stays out of the traffic path.

Electrical is 220V single-phase, 20-amp startup draw, 10-12 amp running draw, same as any four-post storage lift. Racing teams often already have that circuit from the tire machine or the plasma cutter, which was true in our Des Moines customer’s case. If a team is running everything off a portable generator, we sit down with them at order time and match the pump motor’s inrush current to the generator’s surge rating. A gas generator that runs a tire machine fine can still stumble on a lift pump if the surge headroom is thin, and that is an ugly surprise to discover mid-install.

Timeline, spares, and how to stock the trailer bay

A racing team ordering a car lift for storage from us usually takes delivery in one to two weeks. We keep the popular four-post models in the Ames warehouse and ship them on our own truck when possible. Install runs half a day for the team plus one of our guys, mostly because racing teams already know their way around a torque wrench and a hammer drill. First chassis on the lift the same afternoon.

Stock the trailer bay with a seal kit, a spare hydraulic hose, a spare set of lock cables, and a bottle of the manufacturer-spec hydraulic fluid. That is the racing-team spares list and it fits in one small parts bin. Order it with the lift and you will save a two-week wait mid-season when something fails on Wednesday and race day is Friday.
