Freight logistics is the piece of a car lift install that most buyers underestimate, and off-road and overlanding builders are among the customers most affected by it because their shops tend to sit on rural properties with challenging site access. We are Auto Lift Services out of Ames, Iowa, and this is a case study from a recent northern Missouri install for an overlanding builder specializing in differential fluid service and driveline work on heavily-modified rigs. The lessons are real, and they apply to anyone planning an install on a rural site where a semi trailer cannot pull into the shop bay and a liftgate cannot solve the problem.

The Site: Northern Missouri Overlanding Shop

The builder we worked with operates from a metal building on a rural property in northern Missouri, roughly two hours south of our Ames base. The building itself is well-designed for the work — 14-foot side walls, a five-inch slab poured with proper rebar, and a clear-span interior that accommodates lifted trucks with roof-top tents fully deployed. The problem was not the building. It was getting a crated commercial car lift from a semi trailer parked on a state highway into the shop bay a hundred yards up a gravel driveway with a slight grade.

This is the situation every rural builder runs into. Commercial LTL carriers deliver to a receiving dock or a paved lot with turnaround space, not to a shop at the end of a gravel drive. When we scoped the install, the freight leg was the most complicated piece of the entire project. Equipment selection took an afternoon. Freight and unloading logistics took two weeks of coordination. This case study walks through what we planned, what happened, and what we would do the same or differently next time.

Equipment Selection for a Lifted-Truck Workflow

The equipment side is straightforward for an overlanding builder. Lifted trucks with 37-inch tires and roof-top tents need a car lift with tall columns to clear the deployed tent at working height, adequate arm reach to reach frame pickup points on long-wheelbase trucks, and heavy-duty arm restraints because the trucks are heavy and often modified with frame skid plates that require careful arm placement. We recommended a 12,000-pound Rotary two-post with 12-foot columns and asymmetric arms.

Column height was the critical spec. A standard 10-foot column on a lifted truck bay means the beam sits low enough that a truck with a roof-top tent deployed cannot lift to a usable working height. 12-foot columns solved that with margin. Arm restraint spec was the second critical piece — the truck’s frame pickup points sit at unusual heights and angles because of aftermarket suspension, and standard restraints wear faster on off-camber loading. We upgraded to heavy-duty restraints on the initial spec, which pays for itself in reduced wear over the first three years.

The Freight Problem Nobody Talks About

Here is what a common carrier will do: they will call you 24 hours before delivery, ask for a rural residential surcharge if applicable, confirm the delivery address, and then arrive on the delivery day with a 53-foot trailer that cannot navigate a gravel driveway. The driver will call you from the road and ask where you want the crate dropped. If your driveway is passable in dry weather with an empty truck, that works. If your driveway is muddy, graded, or narrow, the driver will drop the crate at the road and drive away.

That was the scenario we were facing. The customer’s driveway was gravel with a slight grade, and even in dry weather a loaded 53-foot LTL trailer would not be able to turn around at the shop. Dropping the crate at the road meant the crate sat on the road shoulder with a car lift inside it and no way for the customer to move a 2,200-pound crate a hundred yards up a driveway. Every rural builder we have installed for has faced some version of this problem, and every one of them was surprised by it.

Our Solution: Consolidated Truck Delivery

What we did on this install, and what we do increasingly on every rural install, was skip the common-carrier LTL entirely and ship the lift on our own truck out of Ames. We staged the crate in our Ames warehouse for two days after it arrived from the manufacturer, then loaded it onto our flatbed and drove it south to northern Missouri ourselves. Our truck is smaller than a 53-foot trailer, our driver is one of our install techs, and we arrived on the customer’s timeline rather than the carrier’s.

The cost premium for this approach is real but modest — a few hundred dollars over standard LTL depending on distance. What we save the customer is the redelivery fee, the residential surcharge, the guessing about arrival time, and the risk that the driver refuses the site. What we gain operationally is that our install crew and the equipment arrive together, so we can start installing the moment the crate hits the shop floor. For rural sites, this consolidated approach is worth every dollar of the premium and then some.

The Forklift Coordination

Even with our own truck, we still needed a forklift to move the crated car lift from the truck bed into the shop bay. A rough-terrain forklift with 5,000-pound capacity and enough mast height to clear the truck bed is the right tool. Our shop does not travel with a forklift because the equipment is too heavy to move on our regular flatbed, so we coordinated with a local rental yard in northern Missouri who delivered a rough-terrain forklift to the site the morning of our arrival.

Coordination was the key. The rental yard delivered the forklift at 8 a.m., we arrived with the truck at 9 a.m., unloaded the crate onto the shop floor by 10 a.m., and had the forklift back on the rental yard’s trailer by noon. Total forklift time was about four hours including the drop and pickup by the rental yard. If we had tried to coordinate the forklift without knowing our own truck’s exact arrival time, the rental fees would have doubled from standby time. This is why consolidated shipping matters — we could give the rental yard a firm arrival window because we owned the truck.

Install and the Overlander-Specific Details

The install itself was straightforward for our crew because the customer had prepped the site correctly. Slab was cured, anchor zones were clear of debris, hydraulic-line routing was planned, and electrical was pre-wired for the power unit location. We set columns plumb, torqued anchors to spec, plumbed the hydraulic system, strung the equalization cables, installed arms and heavy-duty restraints, bled the system, and function-tested every safety device.

The overlander-specific detail was the arm-pad configuration. Standard rubber pads compress under the weight of a lifted truck and can slip on frame skid plates. We swapped to specifically-shaped adapter pucks that fit the customer’s truck models and provide positive engagement on the frame skid plate contact points. The customer’s first lift on install day was on a 6,000-pound lifted truck with 37-inch tires, and the pucks held cleanly with zero movement. That kind of detail is the difference between a car lift install that works for the customer’s actual vehicles and one that works only on paper.

Lessons and What We Would Do Again

Every rural install teaches us something. The main lesson from this one — and it echoes lessons from installs across Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois — is that freight logistics for a car lift install to a rural site cannot be an afterthought. It is either the most complicated line item in the project or it is planned early enough to become straightforward. There is no middle ground. Rural buyers who accept a standard LTL quote and hope for the best usually end up paying more in redelivery fees and headaches than they would have paid for consolidated shipping.
